Numerical Analysis of Turbulent Flows in the Scroll Volute of Centrifugal Compressor (벌류트 압축기내의 난류유동 수치해석)

  • The flow analysis was made by applying the turbulent models in the scroll volume of centrifugal compressor. The $k-{\varepsilon}.\;k-{\omega}$, Spalart-Allmaras and reynolds stress models are used in which the hybrid grid is applied for the simulation. The velocity vector the Pressure contour. the change of residual along the iteration number. and the dynamic head are simulated by solving the Navier-Stokes equations for the comparison of four example cases.

  • Three dimensional turbulent flow in the scroll volute of centrifugal compressor has been numerically investigated in this paper by solving the Navier-Stokes equations and $\kappa-\varepsilon$ equation model. The computational grid for the flow field of the scroll volute has been constructed based on the multi-block grid concept, which is good to avoid the central grid singularity as well as to promote grid stretching toward the volute wall. Numerical result has been obtained for both the two- and three- dimensions. For the latter flow, result of the scroll volute flow is compared with that of the straight conical volute. This comparison has sorted out the characteristic features of the three-dimensional scroll-type volute flow of centrifugal compressor.

  • This paper suggests the establishment of high-accuracy and high-efficiency machining method of scroll shape workpiece by using the feed control method. The cutting paths for machining the inside and outside surfaces of the scroll-shape workpiece are calculated, and the calculation method of the cutting chip areas based on the coordinate of the base circle is shown. A feed control method is proposed for a constant cutting area and cutting force. By machining test of scroll shape workpiece, The machined accuracy of wrap, tool wear, and surface roughness are evaluated. By this method, Reduction of the machining time and large increase of the efficiency can be expected.

  • The primary function of centrifugal compressor volute is to flow from the impeller and diffuser to the pipe system. The strength of the scroll vortex and flow pattern in the volute vary with the operating point. This is largely caused by the interaction between the impeller and the volute flow fields. The recirculation flow around the tongue and the scroll vortex can be used to understand the characteristics of the volute flow at off-design points. The present study aims to find the characteristics of a flow pattern in the diffuser and volute of a centrifugal compressor from the rectangular cross section of the volute. Measurements are carried out using PIV. The results obtained in this study show that the separation region around the tongue is reduced and that the recirculation flow increases as the flow coefficient decreases.
