A convolution alogorithm combined with Fourier transformation is applied to the tomographic reconstruction of the asymmetric spray structure to identify the local drop size and volume concentration. The line of sight intergrated data from Malvern particle analyzer with multiangular scanning form a basic information for the deconvolution. Linear interpolation is tested to obtain the effect of increasing number of scanning angles. This transformation method predicts well the structure of asymmetric spray. The tehnique can be extended to other line of sight combustion diagnostics.

Thermal and structural finite element analyses were performed for the turbopump turbine bladed disk model with shroud of a liquid rocket engine. The only 1/80 part model was analyzed which consists of 3D eight node isoparametric solid elements. The applied loading history consists of a startup condition with a thermal spike and a steady state. Heat transfer coefficient on the blade was predicted using the commercial Navier-Stokes solver, Fluent. Transient thermal responses during startup and steady states were calculated using a 3D finite element code developed. Maximum stress and shroud tip displacement under the influence of centrifugal and thermal loading were also determined.
The last stage blade of the low pressure steam turbine remarkably affects turbine plant performance and availability Turbine manufacturers are continuously developing the low pressure last stage blades using the latest technology in order to achieve higher reliability and improved efficiency. They tend to lengthen the last stage blade and apply shrouds at the blades to enhance turbine efficiency. The long blades increase the blade tip circumferential speed and water droplet erosion at shroud is anticipated. Parts of integral shrouds of the last stage 40 inch blades were cracked and liberated recently in a combined cycle power plant. In order to analyze the root cause of the last stage blades shroud cracks, we investigated operational history, heat balance diagram, damaged blades shape, fractured surface of damaged blades, microstructure examination and design data, etc. Root causes were analyzed as the improper material and design of the blade. Notches induced by erosion and blade shroud were failed eventually by high cycle fatigue. This paper describes the root cause analysis and countermeasures for the steam turbine last stage blade shroud cracks of the combined cycle power plant.

In this paper, a successful result of modification of an axial flow fan and a shroud for noise reduction of a window type air conditioner is presented especially in order to verify the importance of blade shape improvement and the searching for the optimal shape of shrouds. Effective ways to work out the result as mentioned above are to make the tip of the blade varied in thickness and to have special shapes. From the viewpoint of the shape in a shroud, several cases were examined and the particular value of a design parameter of the shroud was acquired to get the best noise reduction of an air conditioner. Through the application of the methods, the air conditioner became less noisy by 4.5 dB(A) in terms of air-borne noise produced only by the axial flow fan and consumed less energy by 20.9% compared to the current one.

The present study investigates the local heat/mass transfer characteristics on a rotating disk which is the top disk covered with a shroud in HDD. The naphthalene sublimation technique is employed to determine the local heat/mass transfer coefficients on the rotating disk. Flow field measurements using Laser Doppler Anemometry (LDA) and numerical calculations are performed to analyze the flow patterns induced by the disk rotation. HDD has been developed for compactness and speedy data access, thus the rotating velocity of the disk is increased and the height of a hub is decreased. The experiments are conducted for the various hub heights of 5, 10 and 15 mm, for the rotating Reynolds numbers of $5.5{\times}10^4$ to $1.1{\times}10^5$ and for the effects of the presence of a read/write head arm. The results show that the heat transfer on the rotating disk is enhanced considerably for the decrease of the hub height and for the increase of the rotating Reynolds number. The head arm inserted in the cavity decreases the heat transfer despite the enhancement of tangential RMS velocity because of the deficit of the momentum in the flow field.

Experimental and computational studies on a turbopump inducer with and without a bearing strut were performed to evaluate the effects of a strut on the performance of an inducer. Head rise, efficiency and surface static pressures were measured and compared with computational results. Generally a good agreement is observed between experimental and computational results, but some discrepancies are observed due to complex flow features such as backflows at the inlet and strut/inducer interactions. For the flow rates where the backflow region is large, installing a strut enhanced the hydraulic performance of the inducer by diminishing the size of the backflows. The results also show that the strut has negligible effect on the suction performance of the inducer.

Recent trend in pursuit of high performance and effectiveness for automotive cooling system has changed the application of material for impeller of automotive water pump from metal to high ability engineering resin, which can achieve optimization of design of impeller geometry and realize lightweight high efficiency water pump. Closed type water pump improves hydraulic loss of fluid through the clearance between volute casing and impeller compared with that of the existing open type water pump(Although closed type is heavier than open type for the same size and same material, adoption of plastics can solve the problem.). In the present study, the characteristics of hydraulic performance of closed type water pump were investigated with respect to the angle between shroud and hub of impeller and the shape of discharge port of volute casing. Performance tests were carried out for 4 cases, that is, for 2 impellers and 2 casings. The modification of shape of only discharge port can enhance the hydraulic performance by 10 percent and the pump efficiency by 4-6 percent.

The effect of tip clearance on the performance of a supersonic impulse turbine was investigated experimentally. Test was performed using high pressure air in wide ranges of pressure ratio and rotational speeds. Test revealed that efficiency gradient of the subject turbine at a reference test point was a very low value of 0.05. Turbine efficiency was varied non-linearly with respect to tip clearance. It has been found that efficiency gradient is proportional to the cube of rotational speed at a fixed turbine pressure ratio. It also has been found that efficiency gradient shows its minimum at a reference test pressure ratio irrespective of rotational speeds.

The performance of satellite parts must be verified under the space orbit environment before the launch. This paper develops a model formula considering the thermal environment such as conduction, radiation, heat loss and internal heating between satellite parts and a small thermal vacuum chamber for thermal vacuum tests. System identification is carried out using test data from 20 recent thermal vacuum tests conducted by the Korea Aerospace Research Institute. It is verified that the model formula and the identification results are valid, except when the heating of the functional test of the test specimen is not constant.

This paper presents a case history on failures of impeller and shaft due to pressure pulsation at single stage feed water pumps in 700 MW nuclear power plant during commissioning operation. The pumps had been service and had run for approximately $40{\sim}50$ hours. For the most part, the failures of impeller occurred with the presence of a number of fatigue cracks. All cracks were associated with the deleterious surface layer of impeller by visual and metallurgical examination. On-site testing and analytical approach was performed on the systems to diagnose the problem and develop a solution to reduce the effect of exciting sources. A major concern at high-energy centrifugal pump is the pressure pulsation created from trailing edge of the Impeller blade, flow separation and recirculation at centrifugal pumps of partial load. Pressure pulsation due to the interaction generating between impeller and casing coincided with natural frequencies of the impeller and shaft system during 1ow load operation. It was identified that dynamic stress exceeding the fatigue strength of the material at the thin shroud section due to the hydraulic instability at running condition below BEP.
