  • It is now established that more than two types of blended aggregate have beneficial effects on quality and supply of concrete in the long run. However, studies on blended aggregate have not widely been progressive and the evaluation method of its most favorable mixture proportion is still needed. Therefore this study investigated the most favorable mixture proportion through the physical experiment of fresh and hardened state's cement mortar, in response to three types of composite ratio, natural fine aggregate(Ns), crushed fine aggregate(Cs) and recycled fine aggregate(Rs). Test showed that increase of blending ratio of Ns and Cs improved fluidity of mot1ar. For the properties of compressive and flexural strength, mortar blending Ns and Cs properly, exhibited similar value to one using only Cs, while mortar mixing Rs showed lower strength value as less as 6% of control one. Mortar using only Rs exhibited the largest drying shrinkage value. In addition, even thought it is not a clear quantitative analysis, technical-imaging-skill presenting the most favorable mixture proportion 3-dimensionally is proposed in this research, in order to notify the proportion easily.

  • The objective of this work is to prove a possibility of void f illing through a carbonation f or the purpose of improving the quality of recycled aggregate. Carbonation can permanently immobilize CO2, which is a greenhouse gas, and thus provides additional benefit on environment. In this work, recycled fine aggregate was reacted using gaseous CO2 and supercritical CO2(scCO2) in a closed chamber, and the changes in physical properties of the recycled f ine aggregate bef ore and af ter carbonation were analyzed using the apparent density, skeletal density, pH, and FE-SEM measurements. Thereafter, a mortar specimen was prepared and a compressive strength was measured. According to the experimental results, it was found that the increase in the apparent density and the true density was higher by the reaction with scCO2, which was conducted at high temperature and high pressure compared to the reaction with gaseous CO2. In addition, the pH of the eluted water was found to have a larger initial decrease than that observed with samples from reaction by gaseous CO2. The shape and amount of calcium carbonate crystals were also found to be larger than that from gaseous CO2. The increase in compressive strength was the largest when using recycled fine aggregate reacted with scCO2. It was clear that quality improvement of recycled fine aggregate was higher with scCO2 than with gaseous CO2.

  • The aim of the research is to suggest an economical and sustainable method of reducing pH of recycled aggregate as an embanking and a covering materials. Because of the unhydrated cement based materials on the surface of the recycled aggregate, it causes a severe problem on environment with leaked high alkali water from embankment and covering by using recycled aggregate. In this research, to reduce the pH of recycled aggregate, regarding the recycled fine aggregate, eight different methods were tested and analyzed with three different categorized: natural treatment, artificial treatment, and chemical treatment. From the results of experiment, it was considered that the most efficient method of reducing pH of recycled aggregate was the chemical treatment using acid such as $CO_2$ acceleration or monoammonium phosphate (MAP), and diammonium phosphate (DAP). Especially, using MAP and DAP, fertilizers, is the most efficient method of reducing pH with its time duration and performance.

  • Recently, there are problems due to the exhaustion of natural aggregate resources, and strict restrictions. In this study, the possibility of using Water Granulated Ferro-Nickel slag as a substitutive material of fine aggregate is determined from the properties of mechanical and durability for the concrete that is made with Water Granulated Ferro-Nickel slag. According to the test results, when the mixing rate of Water Granulated Ferro-Nickel Slag aggregates concrete is adjusted, up to 50% of its aggregates by mixing rate can be mixed with general aggregates. The optimum mix ratio is considered to be 40%. The freezing and thawing resistance of Water Granulated Ferro-Nickel Slag aggregates concrete is identical to that of general aggregates concrete, while the carbonation resistance is found to be same as or lower than that of general aggregates concretes.

  • This study examines the ways to address environmental issues by utilizing activated loess to reduce the amount of cements that emit a large amount of carbon dioxide during the process of manufacturing, and by reusing the polysilicon sludge produced as a result of manufacturing polysilicon, one of the components for solar power generation panels. The findings of the experiment showed that the optimal replacement ratio of the polysilicon sludge is 20%, 35% for W/B, and 20% for the ratio of the fine aggregate addition. As it is deemed that utilizing the polysilicon sludge for reinforced concrete may lead to rebar corrosion due to the $CI^-$ contained in the sludge, it can be considered to use for unreinforced concrete or bricks.

  • As a manufacturing process of recycled aggregate improves the quality of recycled aggregate shall be sufficient enough to be used for structural concrete. This study characterized compressive strength and elastic modulus of concrete that used recycled coarse and fine aggregate. Before the strength tests, the fundamental characteristics of recycled aggregate were preliminarily analyzed and the recycled aggregate satisfied the class 1 requirements in KS F 2573. As the replacement ratio increased, the compressive strength and elastic modulus of recycled aggregate concrete decreased. When the coarse and fine aggregates were completely replaced with the recycled, the compressive strength and elastic modulus were decreased by 13% and 31%, respectively. Based on the test results, this study suggests equations for predicting the compressive strength and elastic modulus of the recycled aggregate concrete with respect to the replacement ratio. The values from the equations were in good agreement with the test data from this study and others.

  • The objective of this study is to investigate whether CGS generated in IGCC satisfies the fine aggregate quality items specified in KS F 2527(Concrete Aggregate) through the pretreatment process system and the quality improvement the system. The statistical significance of the pretreatment process was analyzed through Repeated Measurements ANOVA as measured values according to individually pretreatment process system. As a result of the analysis, In the case of CGS fine aggregate quality before and after the pretreatment process system, the density increased 5.2 %, the absorption rate decreased by 1.86 %, the 0.08 mm passing ratio decreased by 2.25 %, and Fineness Modulus and Particle-size Distribution were also found to be adjustable. It was found that the pretreatment process system was significant in improving the quality of CGS.

  • This paper presents mechanical properties and carbonation behavior of the recycled aggregate concretes(RAC) in which natural aggregate was replaced by recycled coarse aggregate and fine aggregate by specified concrete strength levels(21, 35, 50MPa). A total of 18 RAC were produced and classified into six series, each of which included three mixes designed with three specified concrete strength levels of 21MPa, 35MPa and 50MPa and three recycled aggregate replacement ratios of 0, 50 and 100%. Physical and mechanical properties of RAC were tested for slump test, compressive strength, and carbonation depth. The test results indicated that the slump of RAC could be improved or same by recycled coarse aggregate replacement ratios, when compared with natural aggregate. But slump of RAC was decreased as the recycled fine aggregate replacement ratios increase. Also, the test results showed that the compressive strength was decreased as the recycled aggregate replacement ratios increased and it had a conspicuous tendency to decrease when the content of the recycled aggregate exceeded 50%. Furthermore, the result indicated that the measured carbonation depth increases by 40% with the increase of the recycled aggregate replacement. In the case of the concrete having low level compressive strength, the increase of carbonation depth tends to be higher when using the RCA. However, the trend of carbonation resistivity in high level compressive strength concrete is similar to that obtained in natural aggregate concrete. Therefore, an advance on the admixture application and mix ratio control are required to improve the carbonation resistivity when using the recycled aggregate in large scale.
