  • Leaf lettuce(Lacaug sativa L.) was cultivated in deep flow culture to investigate growth and yield in relation to different reusing method of nutrient solution after once cultivation. Five different treatments were allocated to the nutrient solutions - Control(total renewal of solution), NSS(nutrient solution supplement), U control, NSAC(nutrient solution analysis and compensation), NSAC and Humus supply(NSAC with supply of Humus). The pH of solution was kept stable below 7.0 during 4 successive culture in NSAC and NSAC and Humus supply. U was sharply declined in NSS as the number of cultivation was increased. Gmwth and yield of NSAC was similar to those of Control because nutrient elements were kept the balance to the better growth, while the lettuce grown in NSS and EC control was shown lower growth rate. In the nutrient solutions, Content of N $O_3$-N and N $H_4$-N were remarkably decreased after the cultivation in all treatments. Ca and Mg were shown to be accumulated in nutrient solution regardless of culture times and treatments. After the first culture in NSAC and Humus supply, total N and P$_2$ $O_{5}$ content in leaves were lower than any other treatments, but Ca content was higher. Those were not significant as following cultures, and no significant difference of K and Mg content were shown among the treatments.

  • Production cost as well as environmental contamination can be reduced by reuse of drained nutrient solution in hydroponic. This research was conducted to obtain the information in changes in inorganic elements concentration of supplied and drained nutrient solution as well as of plant leaves. To achieve the objective, the samples of supplied and drained solution and cherry tomato leaf tissues were periodically collected and analyzed during the hydroponic cultivation. The electrical conductivity (EC) of supplied and drained nutrient solution in early growth stage of cherry tomato were measured as around $2.0dS{\cdot}m^{-1}$, but those values move up with the passage of time reaching to $2.0dS{\cdot}m^{-1}$ at flowering stage of 9th fruiting node. The pHs of drained solution in early growth stage were 6.4 to 6.7, however those showed a tendency to get lowered to 5.9 to 6.1 as time passed during the crop cultivation. The concentration differences of $NO_3-N$, P, K, Ca, and Mg between supplied and drained solution were not distinctive until flowering stages of 4th fruiting nodes, while those in drained solution moved up after the stage. The tissue N contents of leaves decrease gradually and those of K and Ca increased as crops grew. However, Tissue P and Mg contents were maintained similarly from transplant to end-crop. The above results would be used in correction of drained nutrient solution when element compositions are varied compared to supplied solution in hydroponic cultivation of tomatoes.

  • Nutrient uptake by plants and drainage ratio in culture beds can affect ion balance and concentrations of nutrient solutions in electrical conductivity (EC)-based closed-loop soilless culture. This study was conducted to analyze ion concentration changes with time and drainage ratio under EC-based nutrient control in closed-loop soilless culture for sweet pepper plants (Capsicum annum L. 'Boogie'). At first experiment, ion concentrations of the nutrient solution were periodically analysed while collected drainage was being reused by mixing with fresh nutrient solution at a dilution rate of EC $2.2\;dSm^{-1}$. Changes in ion concentrations of $K^+$, $Ca^{2+}$, $Mg^{2+}$, $NO_3^-$, $SO_4^{2-}$, and $PO_4^{3-}$ were 1.13, 5.35, 0.92, 0.9, 1.10, $0.19\;meq{\cdot}L^{-1}$, respectively. Ion balance such as $K^+$ : $Ca^{2+}$ and $SO_4^{2-}$ : $NO_3^-$ were mainly affected during the recirculation of nutrient solution. At second experiment, ion concentrations and EC of drainage were compared before and after replenishment under different four drainage ratios of 7%, 16%, 39%, and 51%. Ion ratios of the recirculated nutrient solutions such as $K^+$ : $Ca^{2+}$ for cation and $SO_4^{2-}$ : $NO_3^-$ for anion were investigated. ECs of drainage decreased with increase of drainage ratio and each ion concentration showed the same trends as EC did. Ion balances in drainage with drainage ratio were a little different from each other, but each ratio could be corrected by replenishment process. The ion balance at 7% drainage ratio was closest to initial ratio and followed by 16%, 51%, and 39% in the order. Ion balance such as $K^+$ : $Ca^{2+}$ and $NO_3^-$ : $PO_4^{3-}$ were mainly affected the correction process.

  • In the recirculating hydroponics, pH of nutrient solution was gradually decreased until the middle of growing-period, and then began to go up and reached the initial level at the latter of growing-period regardless of Cu·Zn content. Changes of pH was gently down for supply of humus in nutrient solution. The growth of lettuce was good with supply of humus, but it was decreased as Cu·Zn content was increased. Although leaf chlorosis was caused by excessive content of Cu·Zn as 5, 10 ppm, it was controlled by adding humus in nutrient solution, and fresh weight of lettuce was obviously improved by adding humus.

  • The effect of planting densities on the growth of $Sedum$ $samentosum$ (4 collections) was investigated using nutrient film technique (NFT) with Yamazaki' lettuce nutrient solution (1982) from September 5th to October 24th in non-heating plastic film house. At 40 days, the plant height of 4 collections showed the range of 15.0-18.9 cm, and mean plant height was high the order of $10{\times}10$, $2.5{\times}2.5$, and $5{\times}5cm$. The growth of 'Pohang' and 'Wando' collections was better compared to that of 'Gunsan' and 'Wanju' collections. Number of node, stem diameter, and fresh and dry weight per plant were decreased in higher planting density. Despite the lower fresh weight per plant obtained, the fresh yield per $m^2$ was significantly increased in higher planting density. The mean fresh yield was $14.9kg{\cdot}m^{-2}$ in $2.5{\times}2.5cm$, and 'Pohang' collection showed the highest fresh yield ($17.6kg{\cdot}m^{-2}$). The first optimized harvesting time base on plant height was 30-40 days after NFT culture during autumn season. In eating quality, compression force of stem and bitterness of shoot were decreased in higher planting density. However, the heavy labor demanding high density cutting needs to be improved for hydroponic culture of $S.$ $samentosum$.

  • This paper reviews the engineering approach needed to support humans during their long-term missions in space. This approach includes closed plant production systems under microgravity or low pressure, mass recycling, air revitalization, water purification, waste management, elimination of trace contaminants, lighting, and nutrient delivery systems in controlled ecological life support system (CELSS). Requirements of crops f3r space use are high production, edibility, digestibility, many culinary uses, capability of automation, short stems, and high transpiration. Low pressure on Mars is considered to be a major obstacle for the design of greenhouses fer crop production. However interest in Mars inflatable greenhouse applicable to planetary surface has increased. Structure, internal pressure, material, method of lighting, and shielding are principal design parameters for the inflatable greenhouse. The inflatable greenhouse operating at low pressure can reduce the structural mass and atmosphere leakage rate. Plants growing at reduced pressure show an increasing transpiration rates and a high water loss. Vapor pressure increases as moisture is added to the air through transpiration or evaporation from leaks in the hydroponic system. Fluctuations in vapor pressure will significantly influence total pressure in a closed system. Thus hydroponic systems should be as tight as possible to reduce the quantity of water that evaporates from leaks. And the environmental control system to maintain high relative humidity at low pressure should be developed. The essence of technologies associated with CELSS can support human lift even at extremely harsh conditions such as in deserts, polar regions, and under the ocean on Earth as well as in space.

  • This experiment was carried out to investigate the growth characteristics of virus-free sweetpotato in hydroponic bag culture. The rooted one-node and upper-shoot cuttings of 'Yeonhwangmi' and 'Mannamiwere' transplanted into the plastic bag (0.5 mm of thickness, $W300{\times}L1,200{\times}H120mm$) culture system filled with commercial horticultural media (TKS-2, Flora Gard Co.) and cocopeat + perlite (3 : 7, 5 : 5, 7 : 3, (v/v). Nutrient solution of National Horticultural Research Station in Japan was separately irrigated $3times{\times}30minutes$ per day (10:00, 14:00 and 20:00 with timer control) by the drip irrigation. The growth of two varieties was not significantly different among four substrates in 15 days, but it was excellent in commercial horticultural media (TKS-2) and cocopeat 3 : perlite 7 (v/v) in 20 days. The growth in 'Yeonhwangmiwas' promoted than that in 'Mannami', and the upper-shoot cuttings of 'Yeonhwangmi' and 'Mannami' showed a significant vine elongation (over 10 and 2 cm, respectively) compared to the one-node cuttings. Fresh weight and dry weight in cocopeat 3 : perlite 7 (v/v) were significant increased than that in cocopeat 7 : perlite 3 (v/v). Therefore, the bag culture system filed with cocopeat 3 : perlite 7 (v/v) was successfully applied on propagation of virus-free sweetpotato seedling, and the result expected that the bag culture system could be commercialized without high financial costs for farmers.

  • The experiment was conducted to investigate the nutrition absorption pattern in the growth stages and develope the optimal nutrient solution hydroponically grown the tomato in closed substrate culture system with the nutrient solution of National Horticultural Research Station in Japan into 1/2S, 1 S, and 2S. When plant was grown in 1/2 S, the growth and yield were high and the pH and EC in the rooting zone were stable. Suitable composition of nutrient solution for tomato was $NO_3-N$ 7.1, $PO_{4}$-P 2.1, K 4.0, Ca 3.1, Mg 1.2, and $SO_{4}-S\;1.2\;me{\cdot}L^{-1}$ in the early growth stage and $NO_3-N$ 6.5, $PO_4-P$ 2.3, K 3.4, Ca 3.1, Mg 1.1, and $SO_4-S\;1.1\;me{\cdot}L^{-1}$ in the late growth stage by calculating a rate of nutrient and water uptake. To estimate the suitability for the nutrient solution of tomato in a development of optimum nutrient solution of tomato developed by Wonkwang university in korea (WU), plant was grown in perlite substrate supplied with different solution and strengths(S) by research station for greenhouse vegetable and floricultuin in the Netherlands (Proefstation voor tuinbouw onder glas te Naaldwijk; PTG) of 1/2 S, 1 S and 2 S, respectively, The growth was good at the PTG and WU of 2 S in early growth stage, and at the WU 2S in late growth stage. The highest yield of tomato obtained in the WU of 2 S, although blossom-end rot was appeared in all treatments. pH and EC in root zone of WU of 2 S were stable during the early and late growth stage. Therefore when plant was grown in WU of 2 S, N and P content in the nutrient solution need to low, according N and P content of their leaves were high in WU of 2 S.

  • Effect of concentrations of different plant growth retardants (PGRs) supplied to a recirculated nutrient solution in an ebb and flow system on the growth and development of potted Spathiphyllum 'Top-Pin' and 'Mini' was examined. Plants were planted in 10 cm diameter plastic pots filled with a mixture of peat moss and perlite (1 : 1, v/v) on 30 June 2005 and grown until 23 Sep. 2005. In a closed ebb and flow system, 50, 200, 350, $500mg{\cdot}L^{-1}$ daminozide (B-9), 10, 40, 70, $100mg{\cdot}L^{-1}$ paclobutrazol (Boundy), 5, 15, 25, $35mg{\cdot}L^{-1}$ ethephon (Florel), and 1, 4, 7, $10mg{\cdot}L^{-1}$ uniconazole (Sumagic) were supplemented to a nutrient solution at the initiation of experiment. On every irrigation, the nutrient solution containing PGRs was supplied at a 2 cm depth and kept for 15-20 minutes. The surplus nutrient solution was drained back into the tank for next irrigations. Paclobutrazol gave the most pronounced effect in inhibition of stretchiness. The greatest reduction of leaf length, fresh and dry weights of shoot, and elevated chlorophyll content were recorded in Spathiphyllum, with increasing paclobutrazol concentration. Daminozide concentration greater than $200mg{\cdot}L^{-1}$ resulted in minor stunting. The lowest concentration ($1mg{\cdot}L^{-1}$) of uniconazole showed greater leaf length, leaf width, and leaf petiole length than the control ($0mg{\cdot}L^{-1}$). Uniconazole concentration greater than $1mg{\cdot}L^{-1}$ resulted in similar plant growth as the plant in the control ($0mg{\cdot}L^{-1}$). High concentration ($35mg{\cdot}L^{-1}$) of ethephon resulted in the shortest leaf length, and the greatest chlorophyll content. Inhibition of stretchiness was observed even in the lowest concentration treatments. Among the PGRs, paclobutrazol was most effective in suppressing plant stretchiness. In both cultivars, ethephon and paclobutrazol, but not daminozide and uniconazole, significantly inhibited stretchiness. The results suggested that plant growth retardants (ethephon or paclobutrazol) selected in this study may be used as the most effective agents for inhibition of stretchiness in Spathiphyllum.

  • The experiment was conducted to investigate the nutrition absorption pattern in the growth stage and develope the optimal nutrient solution hydroponically grown the cherry tomato 'Koko' in closed substrate culture system with the nutrient solution of National Horticultural Research Station in Japan into 1/2S, 1S, and 2S. When plant was grown in 1/2S, the growth and yield were high and the pH and EC in the root zone were stable. Suitable composition of nutrient solution for cherry tomato was $NO_3-N\;6.8,\;PO_4-P\;2.7,\;K 3.2,\;Ca\;3.6\;and\;Mg\;1.1\;me\;L^{-1}$ in the early growth stage, $NO_3-N\;7.3,\;PO_4-P\;2.2,\;K\;3.7,\;Ca\;3.6;and\;Mg\;1.1\;me\;L^{-1}$ in the late growth stage by calculating a rate of nutrient and water uptake. To estimate the suitability for the nutrient solution in a development of cherry tomato developed by Wongkwang university in Korea (WU), plant was grown in perlite substrate supplied with different solution and strengths(S) by research station for greenhouse vegetable and floriculture in the Netherlands (Proefstation voor tuinbouw onder glas th Mssldwijk; PTG) of 1/2S, 1S, and 2S, respectively. The growth was good at the PTG and WU 2S in the early stage and the PTG of 1S and WU of 1S and 2S in the late stage. The highest yield of cherry tomato obtained in the WU of 2S. pH and EC in root zone of WU of 2S were stable during the early and late growth stage. Therefore when cherry tomato plant was grown in WU of 2S of EC $1.6{\sim}2.0\;dS\;m^{-1}$in the nutrient solution, not only stable growth and yield but also fertilizer reduction can be obtained than that of PTG.
