Rate Augmentation of Exothermic Hydration in the CaO Packed Bed (CaO 충전층의 수화발열반응 촉진)

  • Heat release characteristics of a CaO packed bed reactor which is used for a chemical heat storage device has been studied. We employed Cu-plate fins to release the heat of reaction of the CaO packed bed inside the reactor fast and effectively. Two-dimensional analysis of unsteady state heat flow inside the bed was performed as a function of time and under various conditions of the Cu-plates. It is noted that the time required to release the heat of reaction with Cu fins is reduced more than twice fast compared to that without Cu fins. That was largely dependent upon the number of Cu-plate, as well.

  • Aquation reaction kinetics of $[Cr(en)_2Cl_2]^+$complex was carried by the electric conductivity method. Its temperature range was $15^{\circ}C$ to $30^{\circ}C$ and pressure was varied up to 2,000 bars. The reaction rate was increased with increasing temperature, but was reversed to increasing pressure. The activation volume(${\Delta}V^{\neq}$) was increased with increasing temperature and decreased with increasing pressure. At $25^{\circ}C$ and 1 bar it was fairly small positive value, $1.82cm^2/mole$. Activation entropy change(${\Delta}S^{\neq}$) $was calculated as small negative value,-9.019 eu, at $25^{\circ}C$ and 1bar. Referring to the thermodynamic parameters, it was estimated that aquation reaction was proceeded by the interchange-dissociation(Id) mechanism.

  • Chlorine dioxide gas has an excellent ability for sterilization and deodorization, and is harmless to humans. However, it is very unstable and explosive as it is highly concentrated, thus its use in the air clean fields has been limited. Therefore, there is need to control chlorine dioxide gas at a low concentration for a long time. Chlorine dioxide gas could be produced slowly and sustainedly since the release of acetic acid from the polymer hydrogels delayed the reaction between acetic acid and sodium chlorite. In addition, as the amount of both acetic acid sodium chlorite loaded within the hydrogel and on the membrane increased, respectively, the generation amount of chlorine dioxide gas increased. The result shows that the use of polymer hydrogels has the potential to control the generation of chlorine dioxide gas.

  • The present study investigated hydration of alkali activated slag incorporating sulfate as a form of anhydrite by employing thermodynamic modeling using the Gibbs free energy minimization approach. Various parameters were evaluated in the thermodynamic calculations, such as presence of sulfide, precipitation/dissolution of AFt/AFm phase, and the effect of oxic condition on the predicted reaction. The calculations suggested no significant difference in the void volume and chemical shrinkage, which might influence the performance of the mixtures, in spite of various changes of the parameters. Although the types of hydration products and their amount varied according to the input conditions, their variations were smaller range than that induced by water-to-binder ratio. Moreover, it did not affect the amount of C-(N-)A-S-H which was the most important hydration product.

  • This research has focused on identifying a significant cause of the pavement cracks and irregularities of roads in Changwon city which have been constructed using steel slag, an auxiliary-based material. It is important to note that the cracks and irregularities yield logistics inconvenience, the risk of traffic accidents, and increased road maintenance costs. X-ray diffraction analysis tests have been conducted in this study on the sample collected by pavement cutting and excavating the three target roads. It is well known that the primary cause of the expansion of steelmaking slag is the hydration reaction between CaO and MaO. While the reaction of CaO is completed within a few months, that of MgO is pretty slow depending on the firing temperature. The test results reveal that the MgO content of the testing samples is approximately 47% of the total average, and that of CaO is around 14% of the total average. Hence, these results make it possible to be understood that the expansion induced by the slow hydration reaction of MgO results in road uplift in the long term, resulting in the cracks and irregularities of roads.

An Experimental Study on Hydration and Strength Development of High Blain Cement at Low Temperature (저온환경에서 고분말도 시멘트의 수화반응 및 강도발현 특성에 관한 실험적 연구)

  • In this study, fundamental properties of cement were reviewed to apply high fineness cement at low temperature environment. The classified high fineness cement has large proportion of particles below $10{\mu}m$ which affects early hydration: an overall reaction of cement hydration faster. As a result of using high fineness cement, setting time of concrete was reduced and compressive strength was higher than OPC at all ages. Especially, compressive strength was more than double its value compared with OPC after three days curing in low temperature. Faster reaction and higher heat of hydration was verified by calorimetry early and maximum heat of hydration was analyzed by adiabatic temperature raising test. The analysis of this study confirmed that high fineness cement can be suitable to be used in low temperature environment.

  • For the enhancement of the concrete durability, we developed high - durable portland cement (ACTPC) by physical treatment of ordinary portland cement with asphalt and carbon black. In this research, the hydration reaction characteristics of ACTPC were studied by using SEM, X-Ray, Conduction Micro Calolimeter etc. When the ACTPC is mixed with water, it is believed the asphalt films on cement particles suppress the early stage of hydration reactions of cements, because the films hinder the contact with water and the elusion of soluble ions from particles. But the carbon blacks on the cement particles accelerated the hydration reactions of cement after a while, because the micro particles can be used as seed crystals in $CaO-SiO_2-H_2O$ gel formation.

  • The purpose of study is to analyze mechanism with early high portland cement and hardening accelerator. As the result, it was concluded that hardening accelerator makes accelerates appearance of $Ca(OH)_2$ through experiment using TG-DTA when it hydrates with cement. On the result of compressive strength, as increasing the amount of hardening accelerator used, early compressive strength was improved. Also, as a result of hydration heat, hardening accelerator accelerates hydration of $C_3S$ that is cement's component. On the result of XRD's analyzation, hydration product for each age could be check and it was shown that as increasing the amount of hardening accelerator used, peak point of hydration product was recorded high. As the result of SEM, appearance of C-S-H was shown as the amount of $Ca(OH)_2$'s appearance and each age according to additive contents of hardening accelerator. Therefore hardening accelerator used on this study is effective on getting early compressive strength.

  • In this study the effect of organic additive, triethanolamine(TEA), and temperature change of accelerator for shotcrete was studied. Then the amount of accelerator, temperature and W/C were experimentally investigated. Effects of hydration time and hydration heat of concrete on organic additive amount were analysed by DSC, SEM and XRD. We found that the hydration heat was increased and hydration time was decreased with TEA(<5 wt %). The order of hydration rate of potassium accelerator was PA < PC-3 < PC-5 < PC-8.
