  • In this study, instruments were developed to measure of mathematics attitudes by conceptualization of epistemological beliefs as a cognitive dimension, mindfulness as a conative dimension, affect as an affective dimension. Perry's epistemological development scheme and Langer's mindfulness theory was noticed as a theoretical approach. Exploratory factor and confirmatory factor analyses, and a reliability test were assessed. This article suggest a new framework for analysing attitudes toward mathematics and changes in attitudes toward mathematics.

  • The purpose of this study was to investigate the relative influence of multiple error sources and to find optimal measurement conditions that obtain a desired level of reliability of a creative attitude test in mathematical creativity. This study analyzed the scores of the Creative Attitude Scale-Korea allowed to access publicly of 125 general students and 109 mathematically gifted students by performing a multivariate generalizability analysis. The main results were as follows. First, based on reliability, the Creative Attitude Scale-Korea was measured less precisely for mathematically gifted students. On the contrary, based on the conditional standard error of measurement, it was measured less precisely for general students. However, the Creative Attitude Scale-Korea showed strong reliability in both groups. Second, the optimal weights should adjust to .3, .3, .4 in mathematically gifted students and .4, .4, .2 in general students with three scoring components of divergent attitude, problem solving attitude, and convergent attitude based on the maximum reliability. Third, to approach desirable reliability, it is possible to use one component of divergent attitude in general students but three components of divergent attitude, problem solving attitude, and convergent attitude in mathematically gifted students. Finally this study proposed application plans for the Creative Attitude Scale-Korea and future directions of research.

  • This study aims to measure intelligence (cognitive characteristics), self-esteem, mathematical attitudes, and scientific attitudes (affective characteristics) of gifted students from low-income families, and to identify the relationship among these variables. 147 students in the lower grades of elementary schools who were enrolled to university-based gifted education centers were participants of the study. The results showed that the percentile scores of each variable were 85% for intelligence, 75.6% for self-esteem, 73.3% for mathematical attitudes, and 71.3% for mathematical attitudes. There was no statistically significant relationship between intelligence and the affective characteristics (i.e., self-esteem, mathematical attitudes, and scientific attitudes), while statistically significant relationships were shown between self-esteem and mathematical attitudes (r=.448, p=.000), between self-esteem and scientific attitudes (r=.522, p=.000), and between mathematical attitudes and scientific attitudes (r=.448, p=.000). The results suggest that although the gifted students from low-income families show lower levels compared to other gifted student groups, their potential level of giftedness is considerably high, which calls for appropriate educational support systems designed for this population.

  • In this study, we conducted the survey to 116 SENKs (students who emigrated from North Korea to South Korea) about mathematical attitude and recognition on mathematics learning and mathematics lesson in South Korea. As the results of the study, SENKs' had positive index on mathematical attitude and recognition about mathematics lesson, but negative index on the recognition about their mathematics learning. SENKs' showed the favoring pictures about mathematics lesson and the needed supports for improving their mathematics understanding. Based on the results, we discussed the implications for teaching and learning of SENKs.

  • The purpose of this study was to find out how problem solving learning with open-ended mathematics problems for elementary school students affects their mathematical creativity and mathematical attitudes. To this end, 9 problem solving lessons with open-ended mathematics problems were conducted for 6th grade elementary school students in Seoul, The results were analyzed by using I-STATistics program to pre-and post- t-test. As a result of the study, problem solving learning with open-ended problems was effective in increasing mathematical creativity, especially in increasing flexibility and originality, which are sub-elements of creativity. In addition, problem solving learning with open-ended problems has helped improve mathematical attitudes and has been particularly effective in improving recognition needs and motivation among subfactors. In problem solving learning with open-ended problems, students were able to share various responses and expand their thoughts. Based on the results of the study, the researchers proposed that it is necessary to continue the development of quality materials and teacher training to utilize mathematical problem solving with open-ended problems at school sites.

  • This study was to investigate the effects of mathematical history-based mathematics teaching on mathematical communication and attitudes of elementary students, through selecting mathematical history content to apply to elementary mathematics and devising an instruction model to use effectively. For this purpose, while the experimental group received instruction using mathematical history and the comparative group lecture-based instruction using the common textbook, both quantitative and qualitative methods were employed to analyze gathered data. To conclusion, first, instructions using mathematical history were helpful for increasing the student's participation in communication, and secondly helped the students justify their opinions to others with mathematical logic.

  • This study attempts to analyse mathematical thinking and attitude of students related to mathematization in the problem solving process and provide implication of teachers' roles. For this, this study analyses mathematical thinking and attitude by dividing the process of solving problems of triangular array into several steps. And it makes a proposal for teachers questioning which can help students according to steps. Therefore this study results students' mathematization needs various steps and compositive mathematical thinking and attitude when students solve even a problem. From the point of view of teachers who attempt to wean students on mathematization, it is necessary for teachers to observe and analyze how students have mathematical thinking and take a stand for mathematics in detail. It also indicates that it is desirable for students who can not move on next step to provide opportunities to learn on their own rather than simply providing students mathematical thinking directly. Students can derive pleasure from the process of solving difficult problems through this opportunity and realize usefulness of mathematics. Finally this experience can build mathematical attitude and prepare the ground to be able to think mathematically.
