  • This study was investigated to examine the effects of writing activities based on Polya's Problem Solving Stages on Learning Accomplishment and Attitudes. A total of 54 students were selected from two Grade 6 classes of P Elementary School in G City to form an experimental group(n=27) and a control group (n=27). The experimental group was applied to a class which was creating writing activities according to Polya's Problem Solving Stages to problem solving and inquiry activities. The control group was taught by the traditional method to the same activities. The five questions for each area were selected as a descriptive assessment of the second semester of Grade 5 in the area of the Academic Achievement pre-test, developed by the G Education and Science Research. The post-test was selected by a descriptive assessment of the content of the first semester in Grade 6. The same questions were posed for both the pre-test and the post-test of the Mathematical Attitudes assessment. We examined the pre-test at the beginning of the school term, then the students were re-examined after one semester, using the same questions as the pre-test. This research showed that there was a meaningful difference in Learning Accomplishment as a result of T-test in the 5% level of significance. Secondly, there was a meaningful difference in the Mathematical Attitudes as a result of T-tests. It shows that writing activities based on Polya's Problem Solving Stages have an influence on improving Learning Accomplishment and Attitudes.

  • In this paper we study on concept analogy of altitude and escribed circle of triangle. We start from following theorems related with sides of triangle: existence of triangle, Pythagoras theorem, cosine theorem, Heron formula. Using concept analogy of sides-altitudes, altitudes-escribed circle's radii we discover some properties of altitude and escribed circle's radii and prove these properties.

  • Given the growing agreement that algebra should be taught in the early stage of the curriculum, considerable studies have been conducted with regard to early algebra in the elementary school. However, there has been lack of research on how to organize mathematic lessons to develop of algebraic reasoning ability of the elementary school students. This research attempted to gain specific and practical information on effective algebraic teaching and learning in the elementary school. An exploratory qualitative case study was conducted to the fourth graders. This paper focused on the associative law of the multiplication. This paper showed what kinds of activities a teacher may organize following three steps: (a) focus on the properties of numbers and operations in specific situations, (b) discovery of the properties of numbers and operations with many examples, and (c) generalization of the properties of numbers and operations in arbitrary situations. Given the steps, this paper included an analysis on how the students developed their algebraic reasoning. This study provides implications on the important factors that lead to the development of algebraic reasoning ability for elementary students.

  • Goos(2004) introduced educational researchers' demand for change on the way that mathematics is taught in schools and the series of curriculum documents produced by the National council of Teachers of Mathematics. The documents have placed emphasis on the processes of problem solving, reasoning, and communication. In Korea, the national curriculum documents have also placed increased emphasis on mathematical activities such as reasoning and communication(1997, 2007).The purpose of this study is to analyze the impact of inquiry-oriented instruction with guided reinvention on students' mathematical activities containing communication and reasoning for science high school students. In this paper, we introduce an inquiry-oriented instruction containing Polya's plausible reasoning, Freudenthal's guided reinvention, Forman's sociocultural approach of learning, and Vygotsky's zone of proximal development. We analyze the impact of mathematical findings from inquiry-oriented instruction on students' mathematical activities containing communication and reasoning.

  • Researchers have insisted that mathematics should be learned not as a product but as a process. Nevertheless school mathematics has chosen ‘top-down’ method and has usually instilled into the mind of students the mathematical concepts in the form of product. Consequently school mathematics has been teamed by students without the process of inquiring and mathematical thinking. According to Freudenthal, it is a major source of all problems of mathematics education. He suggested mathematising as the method for 'teaching to think mathematically' 'Teaching to think mathematically' through the process of mathematization, interpreting and analysing mathematics as an activity, is a means to embody the purpose of mathematics education.

  • In order to grow students' rational and creative problem-solving ability which is one of the primary goals in mathematics education. students' proper understanding of mathematical concepts, principles, and rules must be backed up as its foundational basis. For the relevant teaching strategies. National Mathematics Curriculum advises that students should be allowed to discover and justify the concepts, principles, and rules by themselves not only through the concrete hands-on activities but also through inquiry-based activities based on the learning topics experienced from the diverse phenomena in their surroundings. Hereby, this paper, firstly, looks into both the meaning and the inductive reasoning process of mathematical principles and rules, secondly, suggest "learning through discovery teaching method" for the proper teaching of the mathematical principles and rules recommended by the National Curriculum, and, thirdly, examines the possible discovery-led teaching strategies using inductive methods with the related matters to be attended to.

  • The purpose of this thesis is to examine difficulties students face in the inquiry activities of quadratic surface throughout mathematically gifted students' analogical inference and the influence of Cabri 3D in students' inquiry activities. For this examination, students' inquiry activities were observed, data of inferring quadratic surface process was analyzed, and students were interviewed in the middle of and at the end of their activities. The result of this thesis is as following: First, students had difficulties to come up with quadratic surfaced graph in the inquiry activity of quadratic surface and express the standard type equation. Secondly, students had difficulties confirming the process of inferred quadratic surface. Especially, students struggled finding out the difference between the inferred quadratic surface and the existing quadratic surface and the cause of it. Thirdly, applying Cabri 3D helped students to think of quadratic surface graph, however, since it could not express the quadratic surface graph in a perfect form, it is hard to say that Cabri 3D is helpful in the process of confirming students' inferred quadratic surface.

  • Mathematical learning via projects, which enables the reconstruction of curriculum through integration and emphasizes the process of solving problems by posing questions, has attracted the attention of the department of mathematics. This research is aimed at exploring the link between mathematics and project learning by analyzing an example of student-oriented project 'the secrets of pyramid' focused on understanding 'triangle' specifically designed for forth graders. From 115-hour process of subject-oriented project, this study reinterpreted the mathematical meaning of only 24 hours directly related to mathematics, especially to figure exploration. Consequently, this problem solving involved a variety of geometric activities as a process, such as measuring an angle, constructing a triangle, etc. Thus students attempt to actively participate in the process, thereby allowing them to learn how to measure things more accurately. Moreover, project learning improved students' understanding on not only plane figures but solid figures. This indicates that by project learning, learning from given problems or contents can be extended to other mathematical areas.
