  • This paper discusses the lateral behavior of group pile in homogeneous and non- homogeneous (two layered) soil. In the group pile, the model tests were to investigate the effects on spacing-to-diameter ratio of pile, pile array, ratio of pile spacing, constraint condition of pile tip, eccentric load and ground condition. The group efficiency and lateral deflection induced in active piles were found to be highly dependent on the spacing-to-diameter ratio of pile, number of pile. Lateral bearing capacities in the group piles of fixed tip, in the case of 6D spacing and $3\times3$ array, were 40-100% higher than those in the group pile of free tip. Based on the results obtained, a spacing-to-diameter of 6.0 seems to be large enough to eliminate the group effect for the case of relative density of 61.8% and 32.8%, and then each pile in such a case behaves essentially the same as a single pile. However, in the case of dense sand, it can be estimated that a spacing-to-diameter of 8.0 seems to be large enough to eliminate the group effect. In this study the group efficiency is illustrated in experimental function with spacing-to-diameter, S/D, relative density and number of pile. The distribution of shear force in lead row piles, in the case of 3$\times$3 array group pile, was 41.6-52.4% for 3D spacing and 34-40% for 6D spacing, respectively. The shadowing effect for the parallel direction of lateral loading appears to be more significant than the one for the perpendicular direction of lateral loading.

  • This study describes model tests on instrumented rectangular-shaped passive row piles embedded in horizontal sand-ground undergoing lateral soil movement. We tried to find the property of row piles dependent on the shape of pile, including the position of the pile in row, pile spacing, and soil movement. The results of test are as follows. The lateral earth pressure diagram variously appeared to be triangle, trapezoid and rectangular by shape and position of pile. The outer pile has a larger bending moment than the inner pile in the case of B-type, the inner piles has larger one than outer pile in case of H-type. $R_f$ (the ratio of resistance to lateral soil movement) was found to increase with increasing pile spacing irrespective of pile-shape. Y/L (location of action of lateral resistance force) for $d_s$ (displacement of soil) and $S_h$ (spacing of pile) appeared to be nearly regular position, and H-type is higher than B-type.

  • In this study, three dimensional numerical analyses were performed with variation of pile spacing (S=3D, 4D, 5D) to compare the behaviour of single pile and pile group with cap in granite soil. In order to compare and analyze the lateral resistance of single pile and pile group by changing pile spacing, the pile group with array of $1{\times}3$ was employed. To reduce the computation time the symmetric boundary condition was used. And Druker-Prager model and elasticity model were used for granite soil and for concrete pile and cap, respectively. Using the analyses results of pile group in granite soil under lateral loading, p-y curve for pile group and single pile with changing pile spacing was drawn. With p-y curve p-multiplier was evaluated. As a result of analysis, the value of p-multiplier was increased with increasing pile spacing under 1.0 due to pile shadow effects.

  • This paper analyzed the characteristics of p-multiplier and the load distribution of H-pile group installed in weathered soil under horizontal loading. The results of this study conducted in pile arrangement ($2{\times}3$, $3{\times}3$), the pile center to center spacing (2D, 4D, 6D), and soil density (relative density: 40%, 80%) were drawn as follows. As to the average horizontal loading applied to each pile in pile groups, the fewer number of piles was, the larger average horizontal resistance became. As the result of analysis on p-y curves of single piles and pile groups according to the pile distance and the soil density, as the pile spacing was increased from 2D to 6D, the interaction coefficients of pile group showed 0.85~0.94 (piles in the front row), 0.57~0.79 (piles in the middle row), and 0.60~0.71 (piles in the rear row) in the loose ground and showed 0.76~0.82 (piles in the front row), 0.58~0.73 (piles in the middle row), and 0.53~0.70 (piles in the rear row) in the dense ground. As above, the wider pile distance was, the larger interaction coefficient value was shown among piles. In addition, piles in the front row showed bigger interaction coefficients than that of piles in the middle and back row.

  • In this paper, we introduced phase optimization techniques in the Soil-Nail design to optimize the reinforcement required for each grade level. The optimal design results at the maximum slope height were further amplified to allow for phase optimization of the horizontal spacing of the Nail in accordance with the change in the height of the slope. The limit equilibrium analysis was performed by step-by-step sloping height, and the safety factor exceeded when the horizontal spacing of four days was fixed. The process of optimization was effectively carried out by densifying the required reinforcement depending on the slope elevation. Also limited to reflect the axial force of the nail into the reinforcement details.Using the method, the members' strength was reflected. When phase optimization technique is applied for each slope height by calculating the stiffening precision, it is judged that it will be more economical to optimize horizontal intervals by effectively reducing the repeated reinterpretation process that satisfies the reference safety ratio for each slope height.

  • In this study the behavior of pile groups is investigated experimentally. Special attention is given to the load transfer characteristics of pile groups and to the evaluation of the group effects under vertical and horizontal loadings. In the laboratory experiments, vertical and lateral loadings were imposed on model piles in sand. Model piles made of PVC embedded in Joomoonjin sand were used in this study. Pile arrangements($2\times2,\; 3\times3$) and pile spacings(2.5D, 5.OD, 7.5D) were considered. Load-transfer curves(t-z, q-z and p-y curves), load-deflection curves and group interaction factors were obtained from the experimental results. The group interaction factors under both vertical and horizontal loadings were proposed for the cases of $2\times2\; and\; 3\times3$ pile groups with varying ratios of pile spacings. p-multipliers in this study were found for the individual piles in $2\times2\; and\; 3\times3$ pile groups.

  • In this study, we examined the proper spacing between the expansion joints according to the temperature load of the inter-modal terminal platform infrastructure to implement a new inter-modal automated freight transport system, which we intend to introduce in Korea. To review the proper expansion joint spacing of the terminal platforms, we set the maximum expansion joint spacing according to the regional temperature changes using the equation proposed by the Federal Construction Council (FCC) of the United States. Then, the maximum displacement value, which was calculated through the structural analysis program, and the limit of the horizontal displacement of the building structure were compared. The proper expansion joint spacing was selected as the slab length at which the maximum displacement of the structure, due to temperature changes, was below the horizontal displacement limit. Based on the application of maximum expansion joint spacing for each region calculated through the FCC's suggestion, the maximum displacement that could occur within the limit of the lateral displacement of the structure was determined.
