  • Thick-shell welding for super-sized oil storage tanks is currently done manually, which causes deterioration in quality and a lack of uniformity due to frequent rewelding. The limitations of the external environment must also be considered for manual welding. This paper describes the development of a carriage system for automatic vertical welding to increase reliability, reduce cost, and enhance productivity. The system consists of a welding platform, carriage device, and control unit, which were conceptually designed according to design specifications and manufactured with modular parts. In addition, the structure was analyzed for safety and to predict design problems in advance, and the results are reflected in reviewing the design. To evaluate the performance of the system, a tensile test, bending test, and weld time test were carried out, and the results were satisfactory. The time required for automatic weld was greatly improved by more than 87%, compared to the manual welding time.

  • Stress is the main cause of warpage failure of very thin substrates with thickness of several hundred ㎛, such as IC packages. Stress usually results from differences in crystal structures and corresponding thermal expansion coefficients when depositing different substances on a substrate. In this study, the behaviors of stress occurring in substrates were numerically analyzed by the thin-film pattern of the rectangles stacked on the substrates. First, the substrate displacement was obtained and the substrate strain and stress were obtained using it. When the tensile force is concentrated at the edge of the thin film pattern, normal and shear stresses are generated around the edge of the thin film pattern. Normal stress occurs near the edges of the thin film pattern and the vertexes. Shear stress also occurs around the edge of the thin film pattern, but unlike normal stress, it does not appear near the vertexes. It was also confirmed that the magnitude and direction of shear stress are changed around the edge. When edge forces of thin-film pattern are equal, the normal stress was about 10 times larger than the shear stress. This indicates that normal stress is the biggest cause of warpage failure.

  • Non-linear anisotropic materials were used to simulate the effects of bulk tensile stress in 3D finite element analysis (FEA). FEA was used to calculate the effects of near and far-side racetrack pit depth and simulated bulk tensile stress on magnetic flux leakage (MFL) signals. The axial and radial MFL signals were depended on near and far-side racetrack pit depth and on the bulk stress, but the circumferential MFL signal was not depended on them. The axial and radial MFL signals increased with greater pit depth and applied bulk stress, but the circumferential MFL signal was scarcely changed.

  • Indirect tensile strength(IDT) test and resilient modulus(Mr) test were performed to evaluate experimental performance characteristics for the conventional and crumb rubber-modified(CRM) asphalt concrete using dry and wet processes asphalt. The IDT test was conducted under three temperatures(5, 10, 20$^{\circ}C$). According to the test results, it was shown that indirect tensile strength of CRM asphalt concrete was lower than that of the conventional one. However, toughness and maximum vortical strain of the CRM asphalt concrete were higher than those of the conventional one. The results of Mr test were presented that Mr of CRM asphalt concrete was higher than that of the conventional one. In addition, it was revealed that the overall laboratory performance characteristics of the wet-processed CRM asphalt concrete was better than those of the dry-processed one.

  • A finite element analysis has been conducted to clarify the behaviour of a single pile in heaving ground related to ground excavation. The numerical analysis has included soil slip at the pile-soil interface, analysing the interaction between the pile and the clay has been studied. The study includes the upward movement of the pile, the relative shear displacement between the pile and the soil and the shear stresses at the interface and the axial force on the pile. In particular, the shear stress transfer mechanism at the pile-soil interface related to a decrease in the vertical soil stress has been rigorously analysed. Due to the reductions in the vertical soil stress after excavation, the relative shear displacement and the shear stress along the pile have been changed. Upward shear stress developed at most part of the pile (Z/L=0.0-0.8), while downward shear stress is mobilized near the pile tip (Z/L=0.8-1.0) resulting in tensile force on the pile, where Z is the pile location and L is the pile length. Some insights into the pile behaviour in heaving ground analysed from the numerical analyses has been reported.

  • This study is to clarify the comparative relationship and a mechanical anisotropy of rock on the subject of granite distributed in the Namwon area Uniaxial compressive and Brazilian strengths with respect to the horizontal and vertical axes of granite are shown the linear relation. In the case of the result of the p-wave velocity measurement. it is represented that the velocity of vortical direction is faster about 10 to 15% than other two horizontal directions. The difference between velocities is caused by a developmental pattern of microcracks distributed in rock. Moreover, this result is very consistent with the result investigated through thin sections. The proportion of uniaxial compression strength to Index of point load strength ($Is_{(50)}$) is 18~20 times in case of granite. Uniaxial compressive strength is relatively good relationship with point load strength, Schmidt hammer rebound value, and tensile strength point load strength of them is the best comparative relationship. It is indicated that point load test is the most useful tool to estimate uniaxial compressive strength, comparing with other experimental methods.

  • We studied the characteristics and the growth mechanism of surface cracks from the Naksansa seven-storied stone pagoda(Treasure No. 499). The pagoda is composed of both medium-grained, porphyritic biotite granite and hornblende-biotite granite. Alkali feldspar megacrysts are easily found as phenocrysts in the rocks. Surface cracks intensely developed at the lower part of the stone pagoda, and their directions are of vertical, horizontal, and diagonal. The rocks of the pagoda have intrinsic microcracks which can be defined as rift and grain rock cleavages. Both rock cleavages seems likely to have led to the crack growth and consequently to the mechanical deterioration of the pagoda. The vertical cracks developed parallel to the vertical compressive stress, whereas horizontal ones formed by tensile strength normal to the vertical compression. In addition mineral cleavages and twin planes of alkali feldspar phenocrysts seems to have been closely related to the mechanical breakdown of the rocks in the NE part of the pagoda.

  • When a non-persistent joint system is formed in a large-scale rock slope, slope failure may occur due to presence of a the stepped sliding surface. Such a surface can be divided into joint-to-joint sliding surfaces or joint-to-rock bridge sliding surfaces. In the latter case, the rock bridge provides shear resistance parallel to the joint and tensile resistance perpendicular to the joint. The load of the sliding rock can lead to failure of the rock bridge, thereby connecting the two joints at each ends of the bridge and resulting in step-path failure of the slope. If each rock bridge on a slope has the same length, the tensile strength is lower than the shear strength, resulting in the rock bridges oriented perpendicular to the joint being more prone to failure. In addition, the smaller the ratio of discontinuity spacing to length, the greater the likelihood of step-path failure. To assess the risk of stepped sliding on a rock slope with non-persistent joints, stability analysis can be performed using limit equilibrium analysis or numerical analysis. This involves constructing a step-path failure surface through a systematic discontinuity survey and analysis.
