By studying the relationship between the morphology of mandibular symphysis and craniofacial morphology in classIII malocclusion, this study aims at deciding whether the morphogy of mandibular symphysis can be used as a predictor on the growth of mandible. The materials used for this study were the cephalometric radiographs of male class III malocclusion. The subjected age groups were 10-12(G1 group) and 20 and above(G2 group): 50 were selected from each group. Each group was again divided, according to the ratio of symphysis, into Large(L), Average(A), and Small(S). The results of this study were summarized as follows: 1. In average the ratio of symphysis, G2 group showed significantly bigger than G1 group(p<0.05) 2. In both G1 and G2 groups, the ratio of symphysis had no relationship with the measurements on the cranial base and the maxilla(p>0.05). 3. In both G1 and G2 groups, there was not distinct difference in the antero-posterior positions among L, A, S subgroups. 4. L and A subgroups showed significantly larger than S subgroup in lower gonial angle and chin angle in G1 group (p<0.05). 5. In the measurements on the vortical relation of the face, anterior total face height(ATFH) and anterior lower face height(ALFH) of L subgroup were significantly larger than that of S subgroup in G1 group(p<0.05) and also mandible showed a tendency to grow downward vertically. 6. In the measurements on the tooth position and inclination, L subgroup showed as compared with S subgroup a tendency of extrusion of maxillary and mandibular teeth in G1 group, but G2 group showed such tendency only in mandibular teeth. 7. In the measurements on the abnormal growth prediction by Schulhof, in G1, there was no significant difference among L, A, S sugroups. 8. In the correlative analysis of the ratio of symphysis and other measurements, G1 group showed significant correlationships in chin angle, PP/MP angie, ANS-Me and other, while G2 group showed the same only in MP-LIT and MP-LMMC(p<0.05, p<0.01). In summarizing the above, in the G1 group, consisting of young males, no difference was noted in horizontal relation between L and S subgroups; in vertical relation, L subgroup showed a stronger tendency of downward growth of mandible than S subgroup. In adult male G2 group, however, no distinct morphological difference of craniofacial complex by the ratio of symphysis.
The concept of denture frame, both the vertical and horizontal relationship of the dentitions are ultimately related to a skeletal configuration, leads to postulate that the vertical overbite will be determined by the jaw rotations and anteroposterior jaw relationship. Also, ODI is analyzed to be composed of the determinant factors of overbite such as FMA PPA and FABA. From the geometric analyses of an interrelationship between the ODT and the overbite determinants, the following formula can be induced. ODI norm=$85^{\circ} - 0.5 PMA-(1.08 - 0.01 FMA)(FABA - 81^{\circ})$. This formula indicates that the norm of ODI is not constant value but variable one according to the individual skeletal frames. Through the application of the formula to the various clinical cases, it is proved that the new concept, relativity of the ODI norm, is very diagnostically useful.
Although there is a severe underlying skeletal deformity, the dentition has often maintained some occlusal contact and interdigitation by the teeth compensating in their positions for the skeletal problem, and these dental compensations are manifested in all three planes of space. The purposes of present investigation were 1) to study the pattern of dentoalveolar compensation of hyperdivergent skeletal pattern , and 2) to compare the dentoalveolar compensations of hyperdivergent skeletal pattern in children with adults. The samples selected for this study were consisted of 60 subjects in normal group, 60 subjects in hyperdivergent group. Each was divided into two subgroups by age ; child groups($8\~12yr$ old) and adult groups(17yr old over). The findings of this study were as follows; 1. In child, hyperdivergent subjects had smaller posterior lower facial height(p<0.01) and slightly longer anterior lower facial height than normal ones. In adults, they still expressed smaller posterior lower facial height and much longer anterior lower facial height than normal ones(p<0.01). 2. Hyperdivergent subjects had larger amount of upper and lower incisor relative eruption to their basal bone length than normal ones(p<0.05). In adult, relative eruption of upper incisor was increasing(p<0.05), although relative eruption of lower incisor remained the same as the child. 3. In child, there was no difference between hyperdivergent group and nomal one in the upper and lower molar relative eruption to their basal bone length. In adult, hyperdivergent group had target amount of upper molar relative eruption than normal ones(p<0.01), but relative eruption of lower molar was similar to normal ones. 4. Hyperdivergent group had larger angle between lower occlusal plane and mandibular plane than normal group(p<0.01). Upper occlusal plane of adult groups rotated more antero-superiorly than child groups, and adult hyperdivergent group had sleeper upper occlusal plane than normal group(p<0.05).
This study was to investigate the horizontal & vertical bone change pattern when using cervical headgear in Class II malocclusion of growing children and compared the skeletal features between the group with increased lower facial height and the group without increase in lower facial height. The results are as follows ; 1. Forward growth of maxilla was inhibited, downward tipping of anterior palatal plane could be seen and distal movement of maxillary first molar was observed. 2. There was relative forward movement of Mandible against the Maxillary cranial base, and relative forward movement of mandibular 1st molar against the Maxilla and vertical increase due to alveolar growth of Mandible. 3. There was significant increase in anterior and posterior facial heights but the ratio of facial height showed no significant difference. 4. The group with increased lower facial height has shorter ramus length, than the smaller palatal plane angle, and more distal movement of Maxillary 1st molar than the group without increase Ha-young Hyun
The purpose of this study was to compare the arch width of the hyperdivergent group with that of the neutral group in Class III malocclusion based on the vertical patterns and to compare the arch width of Class III neutral group With that of normal occlusion group based on sagittal patterns. The subjects consisted of 118 pairs of studty casts, divided into three groups , 37 Class III hyperdivergent group(18 males and 19 females, SN-Mn plane angle>39.5$^{\circ}$), 40 Class III neutral group(20 males and 20 females, SN-Mn plane angle : 32 ${\pm}$ 2.5$^{\circ}$) and 41 Class I normal occlusion group(20 males and 21 females). The intercanine, interpremolar, and intermolar width of the maxillary and mandibular study casts were measured, then the ratios of dental width to basal width and mandibular width to maxillary width were obtained. Basal arch width and dental arch width were measured to obtain the pure basal arch relation in transverse plane as ruled out the transverse dental compensation. The results were as follows 1. There were no significant differences in any ratios between Class III hyperdivergent group and Class III neutral group as different vertical pattern. 2. As the ratios of dental arch width to basal arch width between normal occlusion group and Class III neutral group were compared, the maxillary teeth flared buccally to the basal bone, and the mandibular teeth tilted lingually to the basal bone in Class III neutral group. 3. The ratios of mandibular arch width to maxillary arch width in basal arch level were significantly different in all regions. Maxillary basal arch width of Class III neutral group was narrower than that of normal occlusion group. 4. The ratios of mandibular arch width to maxillary arch width in teeth level were not significantly different between normal occlusion group and Class III neutral group. In spite of discrepancies of maxillary and mandibular basal arch width, the dental arch width of Class III malocclusion group compensated very well. At the presurgical orthodontic treatment in clinic, it would not be desirable to decompensate for compensated dental arch width too much, for obtaining an appropriate arch compatibility and good results for orthognathic surgery.
A Skeletal Class III malocclusion may be the result of a large mandible, a small maxilla or combination of the two. Protraction devices for the maxilla are used to promote the growth of a deficient maxilla by applying extraoral force to actively growing patients. This study has been performed to determine whether there are significant differences in skeletal and dental changes between FH/Pal 1 and FH/Pal 2 group, SNA 1 and SNA 2 group, SNB 1 and SNB 2 group, and LFH 1 and LFH 2 group after RME and facial mask therapy. The results of this study can be summarized and concluded as follows ; 1. In all patients after maxillary protraction, the maxilla and maxillary dentitions moved forward, and the mandible rotated backward and downward. In most of them, palatal plane is tends to have an upward inclination. 2. The FH/Pal group 1, having an upward inclination of the palatal plane as a result of Facial mast showed statistically significant maxillary forward movement compared to the FH/Pal group 2. 3. The SNA group 1 showed significantly less mandibular backward movement and there was a tendency for the palatal plane to upward inclination compared to SNA group 2. 4. The SNB group 1 showed significantly less maxillary forward movement, but the vertical dimension, especially the lower facial height increased by mandibular downward rotation compared to SNB group 2. 5. LFH group 1, which had large saddle angle and posterior positioned mandible in the pre-treatment stage, showed maxillary protraction effect without significant increase in lower facial height compared to LFH group 2.
It is widely accepted that the shape and structure of bone are closely related to the activity of attached muscle. Numerous clinical and animal experimental studies indicated the significant effects of masticatory muscle function on maxillofacial morphology. Recently, the development of ultrasonography has spread throughout different fields of medicine. In the clinical examinations, ultrasonography is a convenient, inexpensive technique to apply with accurate and reliable results. The aim of this study is to assess the thickness of the masseter muscle and its correlation to maxillofacial skeleton by examining 35 male and 15 female dental students at Kangnung National University. The masseter muscle thickness of the subjects were measured by ultrasonographic scanning with a 7.5MHz linear probe, and their maxillofacial morphology were investigated by lateral cephalometric radiographs. The relationship between the masseter muscle thickness and maxillofacial morphology of normal adult was statistically analyzed, and the following results were obtained. 1. The average thickness of male masseter muscle was 13.8${\pm}$1.71mm in the relaxed state and 14.8${\pm}$1.77mm at maximal clenching state, while that of female was 11.6${\pm}$1.58mm and 12.4${\pm}$1.47mm, respectively. Ethnic difference in thickness of the masseter muscle and maxillofacial skeleton was found when the results of many researchers were compared with those of this study. 2. The thickness of the masseter muscle in both sexes increased significantly at maximal clenching state than in relaxed state(P<0.05). 3. The masseter muscle thickness of male was greater than that of female both in the relaxed state and maximal clenching states(P<0.05). 4. In males, the thickness of the masseter muscle was negatively correlated with the mandibular plane angle and positively correlated with the mandibular ramus height and anterior cranial base length(P<0.05). It may suggest that the male with thicker masseter muscle has smaller facial divergence. 5. No significant correlation was found between the masseter muscle thickness and maxillofacial morphology in females(P<0.05). Therefore, these data suggest that ultrasonography can add valuable information to the conventional examinations of masseter muscle function.
This research was carried out to compares the treatment effects of Horizontal and Vertical type activators in Angle's Class II div. 1 maloccusion patients with mandibular retrusion dand to find out whether different treatment effects or growth pattern were observed between sexes in each study groups. The results were as follows: 1. In Horizontal activator group, forward positioning of mandible and vertical increase in anteror face as examplified by increase of LAFH and AEM were observed when pre and post-treatment datas were evaluated. 2. Males samples in Horizontal activator group showed increase in mandiular length accmpanied by posterior positioning of maxilla, wheras female samples in Horizontal activator group showed increase in mandibular body length, labial inclination of mandibular incisors and increase in lower anterior facial height .3. In vertical activator group, increase in AFH, LAFH, PFH and LPFH were observed when pre and post treatment datas were evaluated. 4. Male samples in Vertical activator group showed increase in mandibular body length and anterior and posterior facial heights, whereas females samples of Vertical activator group showed mainly increase in anterior facial height. 5. When pre and post treatment datas of Horizontal and Vertical activator groups were compared, skeletal difference were mainly observed in pretreatment datas but dental difference were observed in post treatment datas ,indicating that two actiators differ only in their effects to dental variables. 6. Difference between sexes were noted after treatment although no difference were observed between sexs in each groups before treatmentt. This indicates that inherent growth effects in each sex exerts more influence 1km appliances used for treatment.
A comparative study was made on the chewing movements of normal occlusion and skeletal class m malocclusion. Thirty normal occlusion subjects and twenty skeletal class III malocclusion patients were given chewing gums for the study : using BioPAK system, the chewing movement on the frontal plane was recorded and analyzed. With a typical chewing path chosen representing each subject, chewing width, opening distance, opening and closing angles, maximum opening and closing velocities were observed. Seven characteristic patterns were classified based on the types of chewing paths. The followings are the results : 1. Compared with the normal occlusion group, the skeletal class III malocclusion group showed more varied and vertical chewing patterns. 2. In comparision of chewing widths, skeletal class m malocclusion group showed narrower path than the normal occlusion group(p<0.01). 3. In opening distance, skeletal class III malocclusion group appeared shorter than the normal occlusion group without statistical significance(p>0.05). 4. In opening and closing angles, skeletal class III malocclusion group showed more acute angles than the normal occlusion group(p<0.01). 5. In maximum opening and closing velocities, skeletal class III malocclusion group was slower than the normal occlusion group but with no statistical significance(P>0.05). 6. In the classification of chewing movement pattern, the normal occlusion group had Type II as the highest rate at 73.4% ; in skeletal class III malocclusion group, the highest rate was Type III at 35.0%, followed by Type II at 30.0% 7. In the classification of chewing movement pattern, Type IV(chopping type)of skeletal class III malocclusion group showed a higher rate with 25.0% over 3.3% of normal occlusion group.

The respiratory function is relevant to the craniofacial growth and orthodontic diagnosis. The size of the pharyngeal airway was measured in lateral cephalometric view in children visited Kyung Hee University Hospital from January 2015 to August 2017. A total of 74 healthy children (36 boys and 38 girls) aged 7 - 11 years (mean, 8.5 years) with a normodivergent facial pattern were divided into three groups according to anteroposterior jaw relation measuring A point-Nasion-B point (ANB) angle. Lateral cephalometric data were used to measure the airway dimensions. The dimensions of the middle airway were significantly lower, reducing the upper airway space, in large ANB angle group than in other children, suggesting that children with large ANB angle have narrower airway space than others.
