The objective of this study is to find the optimal thrust condition and wing loading of a vertical take-off and landing (VTOL) fixed-wing aircraft through a single engine failure analysis during landing approach and an analysis of transition flight. The aircraft analysis modules used in the study are based on the aircraft synthesis program. To achieve the computing infrastructure for aircraft design and analysis, the EMDIOS was employed as a design framework, which is a semi-completed application program and ready to customize. Simulation results reveal the most critical height at the event of single engine failure is approximately 40 ft. And, in order to avoid a significant loss in altitude during the transition, the thrust to weight ratio must be kept high, while both the engine tilt speed and the wing loading must be kept low, as confirmed by the analysis results.
In this paper, we consider a physics-based 2D flight simulation game where users can easily control realistic flight of a vehicle equipped with two thrusters that allow vertical takeoff and vertical landing. The flight vehicle can be manipulated by directly controlling the thrusting force at each thruster using a pair of analog input devices such as joysticks. However, it might require too much practice to make aerobatic flying solely with this kind of control. We propose a set of fly-by-wire methods that provide easy-to-use, intuitive control of a VTVL vehicle. Based on PD controllers, the proposed methods allow users to specify the velocity or position of the vehicle directly. Furthermore, they are easy to understand and simple to implement. We expect that the proposed vehicle model and control mechanism could be used in various 2D games.

This numerical study conducts the modeling and the hover performance analyses of coaxial co-rotating rotor(or stacked rotor), using a rotorcraft comprehensive analysis code, CAMRAD II. The important design parameters such as the index angle and axial spacing for the coaxial co-rotating rotor are varied in this simulation study. The coaxial co-rotating rotor is trimmed using the torque value of the upper rotor of the previous coaxial counter-rotating rotor or the total thrust value of the previous coaxial counter-rotating rotor in hover. The maximum increases in the rotor thrust is 1.84% for the index angle of -10° when using the torque trim approach. In addition, the maximum decreases in the rotor power is 4.53% for the index angle of 20° with the thrust trim method. Thus, the present study shows that the hover performance of the coaxial co-rotating rotor for e-VTOL aircraft can be changed by the index angle.

Urban air mobility (UAM) is being developed as part of the next-generation aircraft, which could be a viable solution to entrenched problems of urban traffic congestion and environmental pollution. A new airport platform called vertiport as a space where UAM can take off and land vertically is also being introduced. Noise regulations for UAM will be strict due to its operation in a highly populated urban area. Ground effects caused by vertiport can directly affect aerodynamic forces and noise characteristics of UAM. In this study, ground effects of vertiport on aerodynamic loads, vorticity field, and far-field noise were analyzed using Lattice-Boltzmann Method (LBM) simulation and Ffowcs Williams and Hawkings (FW-H) acoustic analogy with a permeable surface method.

This paper deals with the operation of air taxis, which is one of the latest innovative technologies aimed at solving the issue of traffic congestion in cities. A key challenge for the successful introduction of the technology and efficient operation is a vertiport location problem. This paper employs a discrete choice model to calculate choice probabilities of transportation modes for each route, taking into account factors such as cost and travel time associated with different modes. Based on this probability, a mathematical formulation to maximize the utilization rate for air taxi is proposed. However, the proposed model is NP-hard, effective and efficient solution methodology is required. Compared to previous studies that simply proposed the optimization models, this study presents a solution methodology using the cross-entropy algorithm and confirms the effectiveness and efficiency of the algorith through numerical experiments. In addition to the academic excellence of the algorithm, it suggests that decision-making that considers actual data and air taxi utilization plans can increase the practial usability.

In this study, the correlation analysis between total system error and environmental factor variables was performed to confirm the effect on the performance of the integrated navigation system by various environmental factors. To collect flight data of hybrid vertical take-off and landing UAVs, scenarios including various turning sections and straight sections such as left turn, right turn, turning rate, and path change angle were selected, and environmental data of wind direction, wind speed, temperature, air pressure, and humidity were collected in real time through weather station. As a result of the correlation analysis between the collected flight data and environmental data, it was concluded that the performance of the integrated navigation system by environmental factors within the collected data was not significant affected and was robust.
To overcome ground congestions due to growing number of cars, a lot of companies have proposed personal aerial vehicle (PAV). Among PAV, electric vertical take-off and landing (eVTOL) aircrafts capable of vertical take-off and landing with electric power are drawing attention, and their configurations vary from multicopters to tilt ducted fans. This study tries to analyze the characteristics of each eVTOL design configurations. Parasite drag was calculated using component build up method for Vahana, Aurora, Volocopter representing each eVTOL PAV type of tilt-wing, compound, and multicopter. Wetted area and induced drag was calculated using OpenVSP and XFLR5 that are aircraft design and aerodynamic analysis software. The batteries used in the eVTOL PAV was assumed as Tesla 2170 batteries and flight ranges were calculated. Also, energy consumption and maximum flight time for the given mission profile including take-off and landing, cruising segments were compared for each eVTOL.

In the case of hard problems to find solutions or complx combination problems, there are various optimization algorithms that are used to solve the problem. Among these optimization algorithms, the representative of the optimization algorithm created by imitating the behavior patterns of the organism is the PSO (Particle Swarm Optimization) algorithm. Since the PSO algorithm is easily implemented, and has superior performance, the PSO algorithm has been used in many fields, and has been applied. In particular, PSO-SAPARB (PSO with Swarm Arrangement, Parameter Adjustment and Reflective Boundary) algorithm is an advanced PSO algorithm created to complement the shortcomings of PSO algorithm. In this paper, this PSO-SAPARB algorithm was applied to the longitudinal controller design of a VTOL (Vertical Take-Off and Landing) aircraft that has the advantages of fixed-wing aircraft and rotorcraft among drones which has attracted attention in the field of UAVs. Also, through the introduction and performance of the Korean SBAS (Satellite Based Augmentation System) named KASS (Korea Augmentation Satellite System) which is being developed currently, this paper deals with the availability of algorithm such as the PSO-SAPARB.
