  • Sub-bottom profile were conducted in Chungju Regulation Lake by use of ground penetrating radar(GPR). The survey area covers approximately 1,000,000 $m^2$ and total survey line length is about 5km and more. GPR surveys with GPS system were made across and transverse direction of the lake. From the survey results of GPR, it could be possible to distinguish the gravel and/or sand dominant bed from silt and/or clay material dominant bed.

  • Underwater ultrasonic communication is critical to explore and development ocean using instrument. Essential to these applications is the reliable teleoperation and telemetering of the unit. But the problem is that the controllability of the instrument and the reliability of submarine communication are decreased, as so various passive noises are generated. In the existing methods, the control informations, received from an observation instrument, are identified used by hardware and repeatedly compared with standard information. However, such a method weakens the efficiency in controllability-centered systems. This study presents an ultrasonic signal detection algorithm that can identify the ultrasonic signal without the influence of disturbances due to underwater environmental changes. Likewise, the logicality of detection algorithm were ascertained by simulation.

  • Such as disaster rescue in deep water, undersea exploration and monitering for environmental pollution, many applications require the acoustic communication for high data rate over underwater acoustic channel. As underwater channel is very complex and is time-varying, In this paper, The proposed OFDM system with synchronization errors and multipath delay spread is analyzed for high data rate and reliability and rubust service over UWA channels.

  • In order to successfully exploit underwater resources, the first step would be a marine environmental research and exploration on the seafloor. Traditionally one sets up a long-term underwater experimental unit on the seafloor and retrieves the unit later after a certain period time. Essential to these applications is the reliable teleoperation and telemetering of the unit. This study presents ultrasonic-wave remote control system and an underwater sound recognition algorithm that can identify the sound signal without the influence of disturbances due to underwater environmental changes. The proposed method provides a means suitable for units which require low power dissipation and long-time underwater operation. We demonstrate its ability of securing stability and fast sound recognition through experimental methods.

  • Remote estimation of water quality via radiometric instruments provides a convenient means for monitoring environmental changes in water bodies in wide areas. Combined with platforms such as satellite, manned/unmanned vehicles, it reduces the measurement cost and time for acquiring water quality information on the interested target areas. To develop accurate retrieval algorithms, however, acquisition of in-situ measurements from various optical environment is critical. In this study, hyperspectral radiometric measurements, the coincident water quality variables, and its optical properties were obtained to analyze the optical environment of the study area. Field data collected around the Tongyeong area showed that the area has optically complex environment, with occasional outbreak of red tide in summer seasons. Effect of water constituents on the optical variables (remote sensing reflectance and absorption coefficients) were qualitatively analyzed.

  • Applicabilities of two numerical methods, the 2-dimensional and the 3-dimensional method, are evaluated to inverse test results obtained from the underwater SASW(Spectral -Analysis-of-Surface-Waves) method. As a result of this study, it has been found that the 2-dimensional method can supposed to be applicable for the cases where stiffness of soil layer increases gradually with depth, and the stiffness is relatively low. For the other cases, however, it has been concluded that the 3-dimensional method needs to be applied to determine realistic theoretical dispersion curves. An example is also shown that in situ soil profile underwater is estimated from experimental dispersion curves using the 3-dimensional method. As a results, it can be concluded that the underwater SASW method can be effectively applied to explore the underwater soil condition.

  • The MH21 Research Consortium has conducted a high-resolution 3D seismic survey and a seafloor geochemical survey, to explore methane hydrate reservoirs in the eastern Nankai Trough, offshore Japan. Excellent geological information about shallow formations was obtained from the high-resolution 3D seismic survey, which was designed to image the shallow formations where methane hydrates exist. The information is useful in constructing a geological and geochemical model, and especially to understand the complex geology of seafloor, including geochemical manifestations and the structure of migration conduits for methane gas or methane-bearing fluid. By comparing methane seep sites observed by submersibles with seismic sections, some significant relationships between methane hydrate reservoirs, free gas accumulations below the seafloor, and seafloor manifestations are recognised. Bathymetric charts and seafloor reflection amplitude maps, constructed from seismic reflections from the seafloor, are also useful in understanding the relationships over a vast area. A new geochemical seafloor survey targeted by these maps is required. The relationships between methane hydrate reservoirs and seafloor manifestations are becoming clearer from interpretation of high-resolution 3D seismic data. The MH21 Research Consortium will continue to conduct seafloor geochemical surveys based on the geological and geochemical model constructed from high-resolution 3D seismic data analysis. In this paper, we introduce a basis for exploration of methane hydrate reservoirs in Japan by fusion of 3D seismic exploration and seafloor geochemical surveys.

  • The electromagnetic (light) waves have a limitation to penetrate media, ie, water and sea-bottom layers, due to high energy attenuation, but acoustic (sound) waves play as the good messenger to gather the underwater target information. Therefore, the acoustic methods are applied to almost all of ocean equipments and technology in terms of in-water and sub-bottom surveys. Generally the sound character is controlled by its frequency. In case that the sound source is low frequency, the penetration is high and the resolution is low. On the other hand, its character is reversed at the high frequency. The common character at the both of light and sound is the energy damping according to the travel distance increase.
