  • To detect underwater targets using sonar, sonar performance analysis that reflects the ocean environment and sonar characteristics must be performed. Sonar performance modeling of passive and monostatic sonar can be performed relatively quickly even considering the ocean environment. However, since bistatic and multistatic sonar performance modeling require higher computational complexity and much more time than passive or monostatic sonar cases, they have been performed by simplifying or not considering the ocean environment. In thisstudy, the effects of reverberation and ocean environment in bistatic sonar performance were analyzed using the bistatic reverberation modeling in the Ulleung Basin of the East Sea. As the sonar operation depth approaches the sound channel axis, the influence of the bathymetry on sound propagation is reduced, and the reverberation limited environment is formed only at short distances. Finally, it was confirmed that similar trends appeared through comparison between the simplified and elaborately calculated sonar performance modeling results.

  • Communication environments in the context of underwater channel are characterized to be bad by the characteristics of multipath. Multipaths are affected by various factors e.g. the temperature and the salinity of the ocean. In this paper, the representative sound speed profiles were calculated in the southern part of Baengnyeoung island so that the eigen-ray paths with the channel impulse responses were determined using the average sound speed profile of last decade. The performance of underwater communication was analyzed using the BPSK modulation and time reversal method. The significant differences of results were shown according to the change of season and carrier frequency by using computer simulation. In addition, improved performance is obtained using preprocess channel impulse response for the better comparison of two cases of summer and autumn.

  • In this paper we analyzed the localization error of near-field detection algorithm in the sea. The near-field detection algorithms using triangulation and wavefront curvature basically assume a signal in two dimension of bearing and range. But the assumption causes localization error because there is three dimension of bearing, range, and depth in the sea. Even through three dimensional effect is considered, the localization error is occurred if multipath propagation in the sea is ignored. To analyze the localization error in the sea, we simulate the near-field localization using acoustic propagation model and focused beamforming considering wavefront curvature. The simulation results indicate that localization error always occurs in the sea and the error varied with sound velocity profile, water depth, bottom slope, source range, etc.

  • Active sonar has been commonly used to detect targets existing in the shallow water. When a signal is transmitted and returned back from a target, it has been distorted by various properties of acoustic channel such as multipath arrivals, scattering from rough sea surface and ocean bottom, and refraction by sound speed structure, which makes target detection difficult. It is therefore necessary to consider these channel properties in the target signal simulation in operational performance system of active sonar. In this paper, a monostatic active sonar system is considered, and the target echo, reverberation, and ambient noise are individually simulated as a function of time, and finally summed to simulate a total received signal. A 3-dimensional highlight model, which can reflect the target features including the shape, position, and azimuthal and elevation angles, has been applied to each multipath pair between source and target to simulate the target echo signal. The results are finally compared to those obtained by the algorithm in which only direct path is considered in target signal simulation.

  • As the first step to investigate the effect of ship's motion when detecting target with an echo sounder, variations in the incident sound level at the optional position within the sound beam due to roll motion of the transmitter have been measured and calculated. In this experiment, the transmitter (75 KHz) was mounted to the bottom of a FRP model of the 2,275 G. T. stern trawler and the receiver (75 KHz) was installed at each measuring point within the transmitter's beam. Then, the incident sound level was measured for the roll angles from the free roll test on the model ship. For a range of roll angle of $\pm$20$^{\circ}$from the vertical, the measuring values of the incident sound level at each measuring point were rapidly fluctuated from 12.9% to 78.1 depending on the roll angle, and agreed well with the caculated ones. Consquently, we concluded that the effect of ship's motion when detecting target with an echo sounder should be sufficiently considered.

  • In August 2007, coastal upwelling occurred off the east coast of Korea, and vertical water temperature and salinity data were obtained from a real-time surface ocean buoy. Based on the time series observation data, a vertical sound velocity structure was calculated before, during, and after the occurrence of the coastal upwelling, and how the coastal upwelling affects the sound propagation and detection environment through acoustic modeling considering the horizontal scale and actual seabed topography. As a result of comparing and analyzing the low-frequency (500 Hz) sound transmission loss and the target detection range by depth using the parabolic equation model, it was analyzed that if coastal upwelling occurs, a detection gain of up to about 10 dB can be expected. In addition, through this study, it was confirmed that the characteristics of sound propagation can be greatly changed even in a short period of about 2 to 3 days before and after coastal upwelling.

  • When an active SONAR works in the subsurface. its detection Performance is limited by the reverberation. The winds Play a primary role in the Production of bubbles in the ocean. And the bubbles as efficient scatters contribute to the reverberant field. In this Paper the effects of wind-generated bubbles on sound propagation in the subsurface are investigated as a mid-frequency Hull-mounted SONAR works. The active signal excess is calculated at source depths 3. 5. and 10m considering bubble layer for frequencies 5. 7.5, and 10kHz. The change of the near-surface sound speed tend to increase surface reverberation levels and change the active signal excess. In the 10m/s winds. the maximum detection range reduces over 3km through the near-surface . The reason is the upper refraction due to the wind-generated bubbles.

  • The corner reflector is used to increase the echoing area of radar targets in the air, and it can also be applied to increase the echoing area of the sonar targets under water. As the basic research for this application, the authors investigated the ultrasonic reflection characteristics under water for the corner reflector which was made of aluminum plate. The experiments were made by pulse measuring method with the magnetostrictive ferrite transducers of 28, 50 and 75KHz in the experimental water tank. The results obtained are as follows; 1. The target strength of corner reflectors were increased in proportion to the diameter and were greater at higher frequency of 75KHz than at lower frequency of 28KHz. 2. In the case of 5 corner reflectors of 150mm in diameter which have corner angles of 15$^{\circ}$, 30$^{\circ}$, 45$^{\circ}$, 60$^{\circ}$ and 90$^{\circ}$the measured values of the maximum target strength at 75KHz were-25.0 dB, -17.2dB, -15.1dB, -13.4dB and 11.0dB, and then the number of main lobes showing the maximum target strength in the backscattering patterns were 24, 12, 8, 6 and 4, respectively. 3. When 7 corner reflector of 80mm in diameter and 90$^{\circ}$ in the corner angle was located on the minor axis of the horizontal section with directional angles of 0$^{\circ}$, 2.5$^{\circ}$, 5.0$^{\circ}$, 7.5$^{\circ}$, 10$^{\circ}$ and 12.5$^{\circ}$ against the sound beam axis, the measured values of the target strength on each position at 75KHz were -21.2dB, -21.9dB, -26.0dB, -30.5dB and -36.8dB, respectively.

  • The SUS (Signal, Underwater Sound)-OAT experiment was carried out in the Ulleung Basin of the East Sea on 3 June 1997. The SUS-OAT system consisted of aircraft deployed shots as sources and a vertical line array (VLA) tethered by a receiver ship was used to survey a large area where a mesoscale warm eddy appears frequently. The experiment was carried out such that explosive charges set to detonate at 800 ft depth were dropped in a rectangular ($120{\times}120$ km). Sources were a rapidly deployable SUS charge (MK 61 MOD 0), and receiver is a fixed VLA, 90 m in length (150-240 m in receiver depth), composed of 10 elements equally spaced. The reference ray paths are computed by range-dependent acoustic model in canonical ocean based on the historical data. The singular value decomposition (SVD) method is used to obtain the horizontal perturbation of the temperature fields. Horizontal distributions of temperature fields at 150 m and 200 m depth show a weak warm eddy observed by AXBT and the inversely estimated temperature shows similar patterns in terms of the location of the warm eddy. In conclusion, the SUS-OAT experiment has been successful to estimate the position of warm eddy and its temperature field in the East Sea of Korea.
