  • The Free surface influenced the wake behind a circular cylinder and its effects were investigated experimentally in a circulating water channe with the variation of water depth Instantaneous velocity fields were measured in this paper. the measured results has been compared with each other to investigate the flow characteristics of the circular cylinder's 2-dimensional section at $Re=1.0\times10^3$ using 2-frame grey level cross correlation PIV method. The flow around the circular cylinder with free surface affected the wake structure. especially, in case of d=1.0D, the boundary layer was measured in the whole area. The separation point and boundary layer of the circular cylinder could be controlled by the water depth.

  • The authors adopt the Unmanned Undersea Vehicle(UUV), which has taken the shape of manta(Sohn et al. 2006). They call here it Manta-type Unmanned Undersea Test Vehicle(MUUTV). MUUTV is designed with the similar concept of UUV called Manta Test Vehicle(MTV), which was originally built by the Naval Undersea Warfare Center, USA(Lisiewicz and French 2000, Sirmalis et al. 2001, U.S. Navy 2004). The present study deals with evaluation of extreme motion of MUUTV at large attack angles. Extreme motion contains, for example, rising and depth change due to operation of hovering thrusters attached to MUUTV, lateral motion due to ocean current applied to MUUTV at low advance velocity, and so on. Numerical simulation technique has been utilized. The previous mathematical model on manoeuvring motion of MUUTV(Bae et al. 2009a) is basically adopted. Based on the results of present model experiment on extreme motion, the mathematical model is revised and supplemented in order to describe extreme motion. The hydrodynamic derivatives related to extreme motion are obtained from present model experiment and the other derivatives are referred to previous work(Bae et al. 2009a).

  • The mouse for identifying the histological changes of kidney were also divided into the two groups; treated with only $HgCl_2$ (4 mg/kg), the group treated with $HgCl_2$ and squalene (200 mg/kg). The $HgCl_2$ treated only one time at first day. The squalene treated two times a day (12 hours interval) for every day. Each groups were divided into the five groups; 6, 12, 24, 48 and 72 hours after treated $HgCl_2$ and squalene. Historical changes of the kidneys were investigated by electron microscope. The group with only $HgCl_2$ showed that the nuclear membrane was shrinked, the inner membrane (cristae) of the mitochondria were destructed, and ribosomes on the rough endoplasmic reticulum were lost. The group treated with $HgCl_2$ and Squalene showed that the nuclear membrane was more rounded, the cristae of the mitochondria were almost normal shape, and more ribosomes on the rough endoplasmic reticulum were attached. Therefore , we concluded that squalene has significantly protective effects in kidney to harmful $HgCl_2$.

  • Glycation occurs by covalent binding between the carbonyl group of monosaccharides and the epsilon amino group of amino acid. It can alter the physiological function of proteins and causes the development of diabetic complications. In this study, the influence of glycation on protein binding of warfarin and dansylsarcosine was studied by equilibrium dialysis which was performed for 3 hours at $37^{\circ}C$ in the water bath. The high glycated albumin which contained $50{\pm}16%$ of glycated albumin bound less than natural albumin which contained $8.5{\pm}5.28%$ of glycated albumin, if drugs concentration were more than the albumin concentration. But only warfarin binding showed a significant difference of 6% (P<0.05) when the molar concentration ratio of warfarin per albumin was 3. In consideration of low therapeutic concentrations, low glycated albumin concentrations in the body, and rapid elimination of excessive free drugs, these small increaes of free warfarin concentrations by glycation of albumin are not considered as risk. factors for drug intoxication for diabetics, if renal functions are intact.

  • The characteristics of cesium and cobalt removal from soil around the TRIGA reactor using the electrokinetic method were analyzed and a device to restrain the pH increase in the soil column was suggested. When a NaCl solution was used as the electrolyte to raise the electric field strength, a precipitate was formed in the cathode in the soil column, resulting in a low removal efficiency. Thus, an acetate buffer solution (compound solution of $CH_3COONa$ and $CH_3COOH$) was injected into the soil column and acetic acid was periodically infected into the cathode reservoir to restrain any pH increase. Many $Cs^{2+}$ and $Co^{2+}$ ions were transferred by electromigration rather than electroosmosis during the initial remediation period, and no precipitate was formed in the soil column. 96% of the total amount of cesium in the soil column was removed after 5.9 days, while 94% of the total amount of cobalt was removed. Furthermore, the residual concentrations predicted by the developed model were similar to those obtained by experiment.

  • Exertion has been made to develop high-temperature (about $250{\sim}650^{\circ}C$) immersion ultrasonic sensor for the visualization of objects, temperature measurement, dimensional check, or nondestructive testing of welds under liquid sodium. In this study, the feasibility of the ultrasonic sensor taking advantage of a strip waveguide was confirmed by water-experiment. The lowest order of antisymmetric Lamb wave was used in the frequency range with negligible dispersion. This plate wave was excited in the stainless steel strip waveguide of 1.0mm thickness and 13mm width by the comb-structure transducer of 2.3MHz frequency. Its attenuation coefficient was 1.2dB/m in air and 380dB/m in water. The signal to noise ratio of 25dB was obtained from a planar reflector 270mm away from the beam aperture of $13mm{\times}39mm$ size.

  • Physical experiments were conducted to investigate the suspension properties of silty mud in combined wave-current flow. Suspension mass when there was opposing current was much higher than that when there was following current. It is due to the fact which strong turbulent flow in the bottom is developed in the opposing current but oscillatory flow effect decreases in the following current. Critical bed shear stress for suspension of silty mud in combined wave-current flow was deduced to be $\tau$$_{c}$~0.045 N/$m^2$. Formulas expressing the relation with initial suspension rate with bed shear stress, and the relation between the former and measured significant wave height were deduced. The relationship of initial suspension rate with bed shear stress was significantly scattered, but the relationship with measured significant wave height was reasonably good. When there is wave only, vertical diffusion coefficients of sediment were calculated from the vertical concentration gradients of suspended sediment when the concentration of suspended sediment approached to nearly equilibrium state. The diffusion coefficient increased exponentially with height from the bottom in the lower half of the flow depth but were nearly constant in the upper half of the flow depth.h.

  • A protective effect of activated charcoal against the acute lead poisoning of kidney was studied in mice. Mice approximately 30 gm in weight were grouped into the control, lead acetate-treated. and the activated charcoal-treated after lead acetate groups. Lead acetate (60mg/kg) and activated charcoal (40mg/kg) were delivered orally. Serum BUN and creatine were measured and ultrastructural alteration of renal tissues were examined by electron microscopy. Activated charcoal were decreased the increase of serum BUN and Creatinine level induced by lead. Lead acetate-treated renal tissues were characterized by the loss of microvilli in the renal tubule tells, irregular nucleus, enlarged and reduced number of mitochodria, enlarged rough endoplasmic reticulum, loss of ribosomes. Cells treated with activated charcoal were similar to those of the control group. In conclusion, activated charcoal may protect the lead-induced toxicity on kidney.

  • In this study the cleaning spherical beads with same density as water were fabricated. Bead moving velocity was measured with respect to the aeration rate and bead concentration in water reservoir. The permeation experiments for FR (filtration and relaxation) and SFCO (sinusoidal filtration continuous operation) modes were simultaneously carried out under the condition of 1 to 3% cleaning spherical bead concentration, 20 LMH and 500 mL/min aeration rate in the MLSS 8,000 mg/L activated sludge solution. The used membrane was the $90cm^2$ effective area and $0.4{\mu}m$ nominal pore size flat membrane. The TMP (transmembrane pressure) decreased as the bead concentration increased, and was shown most effective in FR mode with 2% bead concentration.

  • The EG/AD/S model ice, originally developed by Timco (1986), was selected as the primary model ice material for the newly built MOERI Ice Model Basin in Korea. However, the existence of a sugar component in the EG/AD/S mixture may cause a serious maintenance problem, as described in certain references. This study focuses on the tests of the mechanical properties of the EG/AD/S and the EG/AD model ice. In order to understand the influence of sugar in the original EG/AD/S model ice and to find a possible substitute for sugar, a series of tests with the EG/AD model ice were performed, and the results were compared to those of the EG/AD/S model ice. The relatively large size of the MOERI Ice Model Basin made it difficult to control the initial strength of model ice, so it took a much longer time to achieve the target strength. In order to obtain a lower strength and stiffness for the model ice, the amount of chemical additives may be varied to achieve the desired strength level. This paper is a preliminary study aimed at seeking a possible substitute for the original EG/AD/S model ice for utilization in a large-scale ice tank. To understand the influence of sugar in the original EG/AD/S model ice, the mechanical properties of the EG/AD/S and EG/AD model ice, such as flexural strength, compressive strength, and elastic modulus, were tested in the laboratory condition and compared to each other. The warm-up procedure seems to be an important factor to reduce ice strength in the tests, so it is discussed in detail.
