Preparation of PZT Powders by Hydrothermal Synthesis : Effects of Starting Materials and the Agitation of Substrate on Powder Characteristics (수열합성법에 의한 PZT 분말제조 : 출발물질과 기질의 교반이 분말특성에 미치는 영향)

  • In this study PZT powders were prepared with shapes of cubic by hydrothermal synthesis with various starting materials, and the sintering characteristics of the powders were investigated. The particle shapes were cubic regardless of starting materials, but the mean size of particles formed using $Pb(NO_3)_2$, $Ti(OC_4H_9)_4$ and $Zr(OC_4H_9)_4$ was relatively smaller than that of particles prepared from other starting materials. Agitation of the feedstock during hydrothermal reaction results in decreasing the required reaction temperature for the formation of nuclei, and in increasing the size of product particles. XRD results showed that the major phase of PZT crystal powders was a tetragonal phase at the Zr to Ti ratio of 40 to 60, or a rhombohedral phase at its ratio of 60 to 40. The density of a sintered body made from the hydrothermal powders in PbO surrounding varied with sintering temperatures and with periods of sintering time. The experimental results also showed that the optimum sintering condition was at $1150^{\circ}C$ for a 2hr sintering, and that the density of a sintered body was $7.6g/cm^3$.

  • ZnO nanoparticles were synthesized by aqueous preparation routes of a precipitation and a hydrothermal process. In the processes, the powders were formed by mixing aqueous solutions of Zn-nitrate hexahydrate ($Zn(NO_3)_2{\cdot}6H_2O$) with NaOH aqueous solution under controlled reaction conditions such as Zn precursor concentration, reaction pH and temperature. Single ZnO phase has been obtained under low Zn precursor concentration, high reaction pH and high temperature. The synthesized particles exhibited flakes (plates), multipods or rods morphologies and the crystallite sizes and shapes would be efficiently controllable by changing the processing parameters. The hydrothermal method showed advantageous features over the precipitation process, allowing the precipitates of single ZnO phase with higher crystallinity at relatively low temperatures below $100^{\circ}C$ under a wider pH range for the Zn precursor concentration of 0.1~1 M.

Effects of EDTA on morphology of hydroxyapatite prepared by hydrothermal method (수열합성법에 의해 합성된 수산화아파타이트 결정의 입자 형상에 관한 EDTA의 영향)

  • Hydroxyapatite (HAP) crystals with hexagonal structure have been successfully synthesized by using EDTA(ethylene diamine tetraacetic acid) as chelate under hydrothermal condition. The as-prepared HAp powders were characterized by XRD and SEM. The XRD result indicated that the products were preferentially oriented along c-axis. The SEM photographs showed that the morphology of the HAp crystals was well controlled by the reaction parameters such as temperature, pH value, and the molar ratio of EDTA/Ca.

  • This article includes an introduction, a history of Pick's theorem on lattice polyhedron and its proof, Reeve's theorem on 3-dimensional lattice polyhedrons extended from the Pick's theorem and Ehrhart polynomial generalized as an n-dimensional lattice polyhedron, and then shows the relationship between the volume of 3-dimensional polyhedron and the number of its lattice points by means of Reeve's theorem. It is aimed to apply the relationship to the visualization of sums in sequences.

  • In Preparing $BaTiO_3$ powder under hydrothermal conditions, effects of reaction period feedstock concentration and mixing rate on crystallinity, mean size and size distribution of particles were studied. Experimental results showed that the particle size became smaller with its narrow distribution as the reaction period and mixing rate increased, but feedstock concentration decreased in contrast with the results based on the classical nucleation-growth model. From these results, $BaTiO_3$ particles seem to be prepared hydrothermally through a multiple reaction procedure that includes dissolution, precipitation, hydrolysis-condensation, aggregation, diffusion and transformation.

  • The nitrogen adsorption method was used to evaluate the change fine pore structure of concrete under high temperature. The mechanical properties and chloride ion diffusion coefficient were also measured. Two dimension FEM model for the life expectancy of RC structure was built considering the effect of high temperature. The porosity under 0.01${\mu}m$ decreased in proportion to the temperature. However, that of $0.01{\mu}m{\sim}0.1{\mu}m$ increased. The strength decreased and the chloride ion diffusion coefficient increased in the temperature range of $200{\sim}600^{\circ}C$.

  • In this study, a comparative study is conducted on the synthesis methods for silica nanoparticle employing the silicon sludge waste generated from the semiconductor manufacturing processes. Specifically, acid-washed silicon sludge wastes with no impurities are employed as the precursors of sol-gel and hydrothermal methods for silica nanoparticles preparation. The morphologies and properties of silica nanoparticles synthesized via two synthetic methods are examined by various analysis methods. As a result, silica nanoparticles from the sol-gel method are fabricated with high purity and uniform shape, while the hydrothermal method exhibits advantages in yield and ease of synthetic process. This comparative study offers detailed experimental results on the two synthetic methods for silica nanoparticle synthesis, which may contribute to the establishment of manufacturing high-value materials using the by-products generated in the semiconductor process.

Synthesis of TiO2/active carbon composites via hydrothermal process and their photocatalytic performance (수열합성법에 의한 TiO2/active carbon 복합체의 제조 및 광촉매특성)

  • Granular bamboo-derived active carbons (AC) were impregnated (or coated) with $TiO_2$ nano crystalline powders. The photocatalytic activity of the $TiO_2$-impregnated active carbons ($TiO_2$/AC) were determined on the basis of the degradation rate of methylene-blue aqueous solution under UV irradiation. The active compounds of $TiO_2$ were impregnated onto the AC under moderate hydrothermal conditions (${\leq}200^{\circ}C$, pH 11). The mean size of $TiO_2$ particles calculated from BET surface area were found to be as 50 nm. The $TiO_2$ precipitates were coated on the cavities or pores on the surfaces of highly activated carbons. Since the hydrothermal process led to a lowering of the on-set temperature of the anatase-to-rutile transition of $TiO_2$ as low as $200^{\circ}C$, $TiO_2$ crystallites of a pure anatase or a mixed form with rutile were successfully coated on the AC depending on the synthesis temperatures.

  • We fabricated FEDs(Filed emission devices) based on ZnO nanowires. The ZnO nanowires were synthesized on Au thin films by hydrothermal method at the temperature of 90[$^{\circ}C$] on hot plate. In order to form tips of the ZnO nanowire, SDS(Sodium Dodecyl Sulfate) was mixed in O.05-0.3[wt%] solution as capping material. After 2 hour growth, we obtained nanowires of chain form The high-purity nanowires showed sharp tip geometry with a wurtzite structure. The field emission properties of the ZnO nanowires were investigated in high vacuum chamber. The turn-on field for the ZnO nanowires was found to be about 4.1[V/${\mu}m$] at a current density of 0.1[${\mu}A/cm^2$].

  • ZnO nanorods were prepared by the hydrothermal reaction of a solution containing $Zn(NO_3)_2{\cdot}6H_2O$, NaOH, cyclohexylamine, ethanol and water, and their $NO_2$ and CO sensing behaviors were investigated. By the control of water concentration in solution, the morphology and agglomeration of ZnO nanorods could be manipulated, which is associated with the variation of $[OH^-]$ resulted from an interaction between water and cyclohexylamine. Sea-urchin-like and well-dispersed ZnO nanorods were prepared at low and high water content, respectively. Well-dispersed ZnO nanorods showed 1.8 fold change in resistance at 1 ppm $NO_2$ while there was no significant change in resistance at 50 ppm CO. This selective detection of $NO_2$ in the presence of CO can be used in automated car ventilation systems.
