When using hydrogen gas as an ecofriendly energy sources, it is necessary to conduct a safety assessment and ensure thereliability of the hydrogen pressure vessel against hydrogen embrittlement expected in the steel materials. In this study, by applying the in-situ SP test method, the gas hydrogen embrittlement behaviors in SA372 steel, which is commonly used as a pressurized hydrogen gas storage container, were evaluated. To investigate the hydrogen embrittlement behavior, SP tests at different punch velocities were conducted for specimens with differently fabricated surfaces at atmospheric pressure and under high-pressure hydrogen gas conditions. As a result, the SA372 steel showed significant hydrogen embrittlement under pressurized hydrogen gas conditions. The effect of punch velocity on the hydrogen embrittlement appeared clearly; the lower punch velocity case indicated significant hydrogen embrittlement resulting in lower SP energy. The fractographic morphologies observed after SP test also revealed the hydrogen embrittlement behavior corresponding to the punch velocity adopted. Under this pressurized gas hydrogen test condition, the influence of specimen surface condition on the extent of hydrogen embrittlement could not be determined clearly.

Occurrence of hydrogen embrittlement could be one of the main obstacles for using structural equipment under hydrogen environment. It is required to develop assessment methods of hydrogen embrittlement for the metals used in production, storage, transmission and application utilities of hydrogen. The most probable method of hydrogen mass transmission is using existing natural gas pipeline. Base or weld part of the pipeline can be damaged by mixed gas of hydrogen in the pipeline. In this study small punch (SP) testing was employed to evaluate the hydrogen embrittlement behavior for a line pipe steel (API X65) with electrochemically hydrogen charged specimens. Results showed that the SP test can be a good candidate test method for hydrogen damage evaluation method. Strength of steel is known to be decreased with the level of hydrogen charging. However, for API X65 steel base metal need in this study, the effect of hydrogen to strength was not significant. It can be negligible regardless of the hydrogen contents in the steel. With this test different strength levels with various hydrogen charging conditions were observed. It can also be anticipated that more sensitive evaluation of material behavior be obtainable by the SP test method.

The hydrogen embrittlement of metallic materials is an important issue from the viewpoint of structural integrity. In this regard, the estimation of mechanical properties and fracture toughness under hydrogen conditions provides very important data. This study provides an experimental validation of the approach for simulating the small punch of Inconel 617 using finite element damage analysis, as recently proposed by the authors, and applies an inverse method for the determination of the constitutive tensile behavior of materials. The mechanical properties obtained from the inverse method are compared with those obtained from the tensile test and validated. The mechanical properties and fracture toughness are predicted by using the inverse method and finite element damage analysis.

Hydrogen embrittlement fracture poses a challenge in ensuring the structural integrity of materials exposed to hydrogen-rich environments. This study advances our comprehension of hydrogen-induced fracture through an integrated numerical modeling approach. In addition, it employs a ductile fracture model named the Gurson-cohesive model (GCM) and hydrogen diffusion analysis. GCM is employed as a fracture model that combines the Gurson model to illustrate the continuum damage evolution and the cohesive zone model to describe crack surface discontinuity and softening behavior. Moreover, porosity and stress triaxiality are considered as crack initiation criteria . A hydrogen diffusion analysis is also integrated with the GCM to account for hydrogen enhanced decohesion (HEDE) mechanisms and their subsequent impacts on crack initiation and propagation. This framework considers the influence of hydrogen on the softening behavior of the traction-separation relationship on the discontinuous crack surface. Parametric studies explore the sensitivity to diffusion properties and hydrogen-induced fracture properties. By combining numerical models of hydrogen diffusion and the ductile fracture model, this study provides an understanding of hydrogen-induced fracture and thereby contributes significantly to the ongoing efforts to design materials that are resilient to hydrogen embrittlement in practical engineering applications.

Recently, alternative and novel energy resources have been developed for use in the future because of the current environmental problems and exhaustion of fossil energy resources. Hydrogen energy has many merits, such as its environmental friendliness, easy storage, and easy production, but it also has disadvantages, in that it is highly combustible and explosive. In this study, a test procedure using a simple SP test under highly pressurized hydrogen gas conditions was established. In order to evaluate its applicability, SP tests were carried out using a stainless steel (SUS316L) sample under atmospheric, pressurized helium, and pressurized hydrogen gas conditions. The results under the pressurized hydrogen gas condition showed fissuring and produced a reduction of the elongation in the plastic instability region due to hydrogen embrittlement, showing the effectiveness of the current in-situ SP test.

This study is to investigate the influence of hydrogen attack and UNSM on fatigue behaviors of the Inconel 718 alloy. The decrease of the fatigue life between the untreated and the hydrogen attacked material is 10-20%. The fatigue lives of hydrogen attacked specimen decreased without a fatigue limit, similar to those of nonferrous materials. Due to hydrogen embrittlement, about 80% of the surface cracks were smaller than the average grain size of $13{\mu}m$. Many small surface cracks caused by the embrittling effect of hydrogen attack were initiated at the grain boundaries and surface scratches. Cracks were irregularly distributed, grew, and then coalesced through tearing, leading to a reduction of fatigue life. Results revealed that the fatigue lives of UNSM-treated specimens were longer than those of the untreated specimens.

For the conversion into hydrogen society, not only studying facilities of hydrogen production, storage, transportation and charging system but also developing technique of ensuring safety are essentially needed. Hence, for the first step of that, evaluated the hydrogen embrittlement of Inconel alloy 617, Ni-based super heat-resisting alloy, by small punch test. Prepared the various specimens through changing electrochemical charging time and measured the toughness degradation of the specimens by small-punch test. The analysis of hydrogen embrittlement behavior were carried out by investigating the fractured surface of specimens. This study has significance on revealing mechanism of hydrogen embrittlement behavior and the factor affecting hydrogen embrittlement in the future study.
