21세기에 산다 - 초고속 교통시대

  • 2015년에는 서울-LA를 5시간에 비행할 수 있는 초고속 여객기가 등장한다. NASA가 계획중인 하이퍼-X계획은 지상 3만m고도에서 현재의 제트여객기보다 11배 빠른 여객기 개발을 추진하고 있는데 성공만 한다면 서울-뉴욕을 한시간에 날아갈 수 있게 된다. 21세기 중반에는 공항에 내린 여객기들이 터널을 통해 도심터널까지 들어가서 승객을 내려준다. 또한 2020년엔 모두 수소에너지를 사용하는 혼성차가 나오고 초전도 전자추진기술을 이용한 대형 화물잠수함도 등장하게 된다.

  • 플라즈마는 반도체, 우주 추진체, 수소 에너지, 디스플레이, 태양전지 등 다양한 산업 분야에서 활용되고 있다. 특히 대기압 플라즈마는 기압을 낮추기 위한 별도의 기압 조정 설비가 필요하지 않아 활용도가 매우 높다. 이번호에서는 최첨단의 대기압 플라즈마 장치인 '멀티가스 데미지프리 플라즈마 제트', '리니아형 데미지프리 플라즈마', '온도제어 플라즈마'를 소개한다. 이 원고는 도쿄공업대학 종합이공학연구과 창조에너지전공의 오키노 아키토시 교수가 월간 OPTRONICS 2012년 6월호에 기고한 내용으로 그린광학의 유정훈 팀장이 번역에 도움을 주었다.

Flame Structure of a Liftoff Non-Premixed Turbulent Hydrogen Jet with Coaxial Air (부상된 수소 난류확산화염의 화염구조)

  • To understand hydrogen jet liftoff height, the stabilization mechanism of turbulent lifted jet flames under non-premixed conditions was studied. The objectives were to determine flame stability mechanisms, to analyze coexistence of two different flame structure, and to characterize the lifted jet at the flame stabilization point. Hydrogen flow velocity varied from 100 to 300 m/s. Coaxial air velocity was changed from 12 to 20 m/s. Simultaneous velocity field and reaction zone measurements used, PIV/OH PLIF techniques with Nd:YAG lasers and CCD/ICCD cameras. Liftoff height decreased with the increase of fuel velocity. The flame stabilized in a lower velocity region next to the faster fuel jet due to the mixing effects of the coaxial air flow. The flame stabilization was related to turbulent intensity and strain rate assuming that combustion occurs where local flow velocity and turbulent flame propagation velocity are balanced. At the flame base, two different flame structures were found that was the partial premixed flames and premixed flame.

  • A high-speed and initial helium jet flow has been analyzed by a developed four-dimensional digital speckle tomography. Multiple high-speed cameras have been used to capture movements of speckles in multiple angles of view simultaneously because a shape of a nozzle for the jet flow is asymmetric and the initial jet flow is fast and unsteady. The speckle movements between no flow and helium jet flow from the asymmetric nozzle controlled by a solenoid valve have been obtained by a cross-correlation tracking method so that those distances can be transferred to deflection angles of laser rays for density gradients. The four-dimensional density fields for the high-speed helium jet flow have been reconstructed from the deflection angles by a developed real-time tomography method.

  • Supercritical injection behavior of liquid hydrocarbon compounds, which are used as main components of propellant fuel, was analyzed. Decane and Methylcyclohexane (MCH) with different critical points were selected as experimental fluid and Shadowgraphy technique was used. Decane and MCH behave differently in the initial state under the subcritical condition. However, near the critical point, the enthalpy of evaporation became close to 0, so that phase change into supercritical fluid occurred, not vaporization process, and no breakup of both fluids occurred.

  • An experimental study was performed to investigate the combustion characteristics of the liquid hydrocarbon fuel atomized by an ultrasonic oscillator. Configuration of the flame was caught by the high-speed camera, and images were analyzed in detail through a post-processing. In addition, the fuel consumption was measured using the balance during the combustion reaction. As a result, the consumption of atomized fuel increased with the increasing flow-rate of carrier-gas, but any correlation between the air/fuel ratio and carrier-gas flow-rate was not found. The variation of flame area was dependent on the fuel consumption and input power of the ultrasonic oscillator. FFT (Fast Fourier Transform) analyses using the flame area were conducted in order to discuss flame flickering.

  • A study has been conducted numerically to investigate the lifted flat syngas flame structure of impinging jet flame configuration with the global strain rates in 10% hydrogen content. In this study, the effects of strain rate were major parameters on chemistry kinetics and flame structure at stagnation point. The numerical results were calculated by SPIN application of the CHEMKIN package. The strain rates were adjusted with Reynolds numbers of premixed syngas-air mixture. Different flame shapes were observed with different strain rates. As strain rate has increased, the flame temperature and axial velocity have been decreased due to the flame heat loss increment, and the OH radical reaction zones become narrower but each mole fractions are still constant. Also, the reversion of $H_2O$ product near stagnation point has been found out when strain rate has increased. This phenomenon is attributed to the rapid production of oxidizing radical reaction such as the R12 ($H+O_2(+M)=HO_2(+M)$), which makes the R18 ($HO_2+OH=O_2+H_2O$) reaction increment.

  • This paper presents the results of an experimental investigation on the combustion of single droplets and 1-D droplet arrays of jet A-1 fuel droplets in atmospheric pressure. Experimental results indicate that burning rate constants$({\kappa}_c)$ of jet A-1 fuel droplets were independent of initial droplet size as $0.915{mm}^2$/sec. It was acquired a general relationship expressing the variation of $d^2$ with time for droplet burning For 1-D droplet arrays $(l/d_o$=1.208{\sim}2.922)$/TEX>, the burning rate constant ${\kappa}_c$ decreased with decreasing droplet spacing $l/d_o$ and, The effect on combustion rate constant ${\kappa}_c$ was stronger to second fuel droplet than third fuel droplet with uniform droplet distance

  • In this paper, high speed camera images were used to analyze the supercritical injection behavior of liquid hydrocarbon compounds used as main components of propellant fuel. Decane and Methylcyclohexane (MCH), which have different critical points among kerosene constituents, were selected as experimental fluid and Shadowgraphy technique was used for the analysis. The difference in the temperature variation from the initial injector state of the subcritical condition until the vaporization occurs was represented by the different behaviors of Decane and MCH. However, under the Supercritical conditions, the enthalpy of vaporization near the critical point approaches zero and the phase change to the Supercritical phase occurs instead of vaporization process. In the phase change of the Supercritical system, there was no rapid density change, so the liquid state image was observed in both the Decane and MCH.

  • An experimental study was performed for the combustion-field visualization of the burner which burns the liquid hydrocarbon fuel atomized by an ultrasonic oscillator. Configurations of the flame and combustion-field were caught by both high-speed camera and thermo-graphic camera, and those images were analyzed in detail through a post-processing. As a result, the combustion-field grew and reaction-temperature rose due to the strengthening of combustion reaction with the increasing flow-rate of carrier-gas. In addition, a phenomenon of flame flickering was discussed through the comparative analysis of the variational behaviors between the visible flame and IR (Infrared) flame-field.
