  • This study presents a novel approach to hydrogen production by biogas from organic waste without CO2 removal. A process model was developed to reduce the costs associated with biogas pretreatment and purification processes. Through optimization of heat exchange networks, the simulation aimed to minimize process costs, maximizing hydrogen production and flue gas temperature. The results reveal that the most efficient process model maximizes the flue gas temperature while following the constraint of the number of heat exchangers. These findings hold promise for contributing to the expansion of "Biogas-to-clean hydrogen" energy conversion technology.

  • High-temperature steam electrolysis (HTSE) using solid oxide cell is a challenging method for highly efficient large-scale hydrogen production as a reversible process of solid oxide fuel cell (SOFC). The overall efficiency of the HTSE hydrogen and synthesis gas production system was analyzed thermo-electrochemically. A thermo-electrochemical model for the hydrogen and synthesis gas production system with solid oxide electrolysis cell (SOEC) and very high temperature gas-cooled reactor (VHTR) was established. Sensitivity analyses with regard to the system were performed to investigate the quantitative effects of key parameters on the overall efficiency of the production system. The overall efficiency with SOEC and VHTR was expected to reach a maximum of 58% for the hydrogen production system and to 62% for synthesis gas production system by improving electrical efficiency, steam utilization rate, waste heat recovery rate, electrolysis efficiency, and thermal efficiency. Therefore, overall efficiency of the synthesis production system has higher efficiency than that of the hydrogen production system.

  • The Photosynthetic bacterium, Rhodopseudomonas sphaeroides strain B6 was irnmobilized on agar gel. The optimum concentration of agar for hydrogen production was 2% (w/v). Maximum rates of hydrogen production by immobilized (300 ml of gel; 2.85 rng dry cells/ml) and free cells (1l culture; 0.87 mg dry cells/ml) were 47.5 and 48.0 ml/hr/culture, respectively. However, when both cultures were fed by 10 mmoles of lactate as limited electron donor at the later period of incubation, the activity of hydrogen production by free cells was significantly decreased but, immobilized cells continued hydrogen production with almost the same initial rate. Wc examined hydrogen production by immobilized cells of strain B6 under periodic illumination for 12 hr-intervals. When the culture was periodically fed by basal medium containing 9.3 rnmoles of DL-lactate and 1.86 mmoles of L-glutamate as consumed electron donor and nitrogen source, respectively, for every one liter of hydrogen produced, hydrogen was evolved continuously with the average rate of 510 ml/day/300 ml gel (2.9 rng dry cellslml) during the incubation time for 228 hr.

  • The production of hydrogen fuel depends basically on the water electrolysis. The study on the decrease of overpotential which activates the hydrogen production is the core to elevate the hydrogen production efficiency on principle. Characteristics on the overpotential decrease are observed through the micro reaction by ultrasonic in electrolytic cell. For the above, the electrochemical analyzer, i.e., BAS is applied, Experiments with ultrasonic forcing into 4 kinds of solution such as city water, city water plus nitrogen. distilled water, and distilled water plus nitrogen are carried out. And concentrations of KOH are 0%, 10%, 20% and 30%. The basic characteristics of the overpotential decrease are obtained through the analysis by LSV technique in sweep technique. In results, it is clarified that the ultrasonic influences the decrease of overpotential to obtain the efficiency elevation of hydrogen fuel production.

  • We developed a compact, 10 kWe, purifier-integrated reformer which supplies hydrogen for fuel cell vehicles. Our proprietary technologies regarding hydrogen purification by palladium alloy membrane and catalytic combustion by noble metal coated wire-mesh catalyst were combined with the conventional methanol steam reforming technology, resulting in higher conversion, excellent quality of product hydrogen, and better thermal efficiency than any other systems. In this system, steam reforming, hydrogen purification, and catalytic combustion take place all in a single reactor so that the whole system is compact and easy to operate. The module produces $8.2Nm^3/hr$ of 99.999% or higher purity hydrogen with CO impurity less than 10 ppm, which is equivalent to 10 kWe when PEMFC has 45 % efficiency. Thermal efficiency of the module is 81 % and the power density of the module is 1.6 L/kWe. As the results of experiments, cold-start time has been measured about 20 minutes. Response time of hydrogen production to the change of the feed rate has been within 1 minutes.

  • This paper deals with an economic evaluation of domestic immersing type photoelectrochemical hydrogen production. We also make some sensitivity analysis of hydrogen production prices by changing the values of input factors such as the initial capital cost, the solar to hydrogen conversion efficiency, and the system duration time. The hydrogen production price of the immersing type photoelectrochemical system was estimated as 8,264,324 won/$kgH_2$. It is expected that the production cost by photoelectrochemical hydrogen production can be reduced to 26,961 won/$kgH_2$ if the solar to hydrogen conversion efficiency is increased to 14%, the system duration time is increased to 20,000 hours, and the initial capital cost is decreased to 10% of the current level. The photoelectrochemical hydrogen production is evaluated as uneconomical at this time, and we need to enhance the solar to hydrogen conversion efficiency and the system duration time as well as to reduce prices of the system facilities.

  • The purpose of this study is to analyze the utilization forms of hydrogen fuel cells, which are the core of building a smart city, and suggest ways to solve them. In the case of power plants to utilize hydrogen fuel cell, it was analyzed as the most promising form of use in the future due to the advantage of being free from intermittence problems. However, despite many advantages, local residents' opposition continues to emerge due to concerns about explosions and the problem of carbon dioxide generation in the case of certain hydrogen production methods, and it is analyzed that resolving them will be the main key to establishing the smart city. Finally, by analyzing the current hydrogen production method and identifying the problems facing it, the solution for the complete construction of the smart city was presented.

  • The generation of high-purity hydrogen from hydrocarbon fuels is essential for efficient operation of fuel cell. In general, most feasible strategies to generate hydrogen from hydrocarbon fuels consist of a reforming step to generate a mixture of $H_2$, CO, $CO_2$ and $H_2O$(steam) followed by water gas shift(WGS) and CO clean-up steps. The WGS reaction that shifts CO to $CO_2$ and simultaneously produces another mole of $H_2$ was carried out in a two-stage catalytic conversion process involving a high temperature shift(HTS) and a low temperature shift(LTS). In the WGS operation, gas emerges from the reformer is taken through a high temperature shift catalyst to reduce the CO concentration to about $3\sim4%$ followed to about 0.5% via a low temperature shift catalyst. The WGS reactor was designed and tested in this study to produce hydrogen-rich gas with CO to less than 0.5%.

  • The production of hydrogen fuel depends basically on the water electrolysis. The ultrasonic effects the decrease of the overpotential in a water electrolysis. A study on the overpotential which activates the hydrogen production is the core to elevate the hydrogen production efficiency on the principle. A pressure sensor system by a new idea is developed and applied. Solutions are 4 kinds of KOH concentration such as 0%, 10%, 20%, and 30%. Two frequency bands of the ultrasonic transducer are 28kHz and 2MHz. The directions of ultrasonic forcing are the vertical direction and the horizontal direction. The temperatures are two states, i.e., no constant and constant. Experiments are carried out sequentially in order in three cases of no ultrasonic forcing, ultrasonic forcing, and ultrasonic discontinution. In results, it is clarified that the ultrasonic effects the decrease of overpotential to elevate the efficiency of hydrogen production.
