(Atlas et al. 1993). The study was carried out in Pocheon-si, Gyeonggi-do from March to December in 2019 to compare and analyze the water use strategies of two co-occurring tree species, Pinus densiflora and Quercus serrata, both native and dominant in Korea's forest ecosystems. Through seasonal changes, we measured environmental variables such as air temperature, relative humidity, precipitation, net radiation, and soil water content. Sap flow densities of P. densiflora (n = 6) and Q. serrata (n = 3) were measured, along with environmental variables. The maximum sa pflow density for Q. serrata almost doubled that of P. densiflora during the growing season, while the maximum sap flow densities in both Q. serrata and P. densiflora peaked in September and August, respectively. Net radiation and vapor pressure deficit, but not air temperature, were the major environmental variables significantly affecting sap flow density. Analysis of hysteresis revealed that P. densiflora exhibited isohydric behavior, while Q. serrata showed anisohydric behavior. Analysis of crown conductance revealed similar trends as sap flow density, i.e., the crown conductance of Q. serrata was twice that of P. densiflora during the growing period. The study compared and analyzed the water use strategies between two co-occurring species. To better understand the underlying mechanisms of water use, more research on both physiological and morphological traits are needed.
Eleutherococcus gracilistylus is a designated rare plant by the Korea Forest Service, a deciduous broad leaf shrub native to the Gotjawal region, Jejudo. This study aimed to analyze the growth responses of E. gracilistylus to three environment factors such as light, moisture, and organic matter, and measure its ecological niche breadth. Based on these results, an attempt was made to identify suitable environmental conditions. E. gracilistylus exhibited increased above-ground length, leaf area, and plant leaf weight under intermediate conditions of light availability(L3, 50% of natural light), rather than very high or very low light conditions. Moisture availability and organic matter availability showed variations in growth responses in terms of leaf count and plant leaf weight. Under moisture availability, growth was favorable under or below intermediate conditions (M3, 240ml), while under organic matter availability, growth response was better above intermediate conditions (N3, 12%). Ecological niche breadth showed in the light factor(0.951), the moisture factor(0.977), and the organic matter content one(0.964). These results indicate that the preferred habitat of E. gracilistylus is somewhat shady, slightly dry, and has a lot of nutrients, and that the environmental factor that has the greatest impact on growth is the amount of light, which is considered to be a priority consideration for habitat management in its native area.

To understand functional changes of forest ecosystems due to climate change, correlation between decomposition rate of leaf litter, an important function of forest ecosystems, and microclimatic factors was analyzed. After 48 months elapsed, percent remaining weight of Quercus mongolica leaf litter was 27.1% in the east aspect and 37.0% in the west aspects. Decay constant of Q. mongolica leaf litter was 0.33 in the east aspect and 0.25 in the west aspect after 48 months elapsed. Initial C/N ratio of Q. mongolica leaf litter was 38.5. After 48 months elapsed, C/N ratio of decomposing Q. mongolica leaf litter decreased to 13.43 in the east aspect and 16.72 in the west aspect. Average air temperature and soil temperature during the investigation period of the research site were 8.2±9.0 and 9.1±9.3 in the east and 8.5±7.4 and 9.3±7.3℃ in the west aspect, respectively, with the west aspect showing higher air and soil temperatures. Soil moisture showed no significant difference between east and west aspects (average soil moisture: 19.4±11.0% vs. 20.5±5.7%). However, as a result of analyzing the correlation between decomposition rate and microclimatic factors, it was found that the decomposition rate and soil moisture has a positive correlation(r=0.426) in the east aspect but not in the west aspect. Our study shows that the correlation between decomposition rate and microclimatic factors can be significantly different depending on the direction of the aspect.

Soil respiration in forest ecosystems play an important role in global carbon cycle. This study was carried out to determine the annual variation of soil $CO_2$ efflux for 4 years in a broadleaved deciduous forest of the Geumsan (Mt.) Long-Term Ecological Research (GLTER) site in Southern Korea. The soil $CO_2$ efflux in the GLTER site showed annual variations with the fluctuations of annual mean soil temperature, but not with those of soil water content. The annual mean soil $CO_2$ efflux except for winter season was 0.32 g $CO_2\;m^{-2}h^{-1}$ for 2008, 0.40 g $CO_2\;m^{-2}h^{-1}$ for 2009, 0.41 g $CO_2\;m^{-2}h^{-1}$ for 2007, and 0.54 g $CO_2\;m^{-2}h^{-1}$ for 2010. The lowest soil $CO_2$ effluxin 2008 was associated with the lowest soil temperature ($2.0^{\circ}C$) in comparison with those of other years ($13.0-13.5^{\circ}C$). The exponential relationships between monthly soil $CO_2$ efflux and the corresponding soil temperature at the soil depth of 20 cm were significant ($R^2$ = 0.31-0.75, P < 0.05). The results indicate that the annual variation of soil $CO_2$ efflux was attributed to the variations of soil temperature rather than soil water content in the GLTER site.
Soil and micro-climatic environmental monitoring was conducted to evaluate the factors causing tree growth impediments at the Baekdudaegan ecological axis restoration project site. As a result, it was found that the nutrient supply was insufficient in the restoration project site due to the lack of organic matter, total nitrogen and cation exchange capacity of the soil compared to the surrounding forest. After the completion of the restoration, the soil moisture in the autumn decreased more than 7 times faster than that of the surrounding forest, and it was evaluated that the soil moisture was significantly low due to the lack of silt and clay content. In the case of the restoration site, the annual potential evapotranspiration was analyzed to be 975mm, which is approximately two times higher than that of the surrounding forest. The soil moisture of the restoration site in the summer decreased rapidly during the daytime when the amount of insolation increased and this was found to be strongly influenced by the increase in potential evapotranspiration. In order to improve the above factors affecting the tree growth at the Baekdudaegan ecological axis restoration project site, it is necessary to induce the smooth supply of nutrients and water to plants by improving physical proprieties and cation exchange capacity, i.e., using litterfall, humus soil, soil conditioner and organic fertilizer. The results of this study are expected to serve as basic data for the design, construction, and management of ecological axis restoration projects in the future.
