Hydraulic issues such as flow resistance, side wall correction, sediment, erosion and deposition, and channel design have close relation with distribution of bed shear stresses but the measurement of the distribution of bed shear stresses is not easy. In this study the Preston tube which makes possible relatively simple measurement of bed shear stresses is used to analyze the characteristics of bed shear distribution in compound open channels with different depth ratio. The Preston tubes are made and calibrated to develop the calibration formula and then they are applied to measure bed shear stress distribution in 5 cases depth ratio condition of compound channels. The results are compared with former experiment data, and characteristics of bed shear stress distributions are studied with different channel scales and Reynolds numbers. Although bed shear distributions with depth ratio show overall agreement with former studies, some differences are verified in bed shear variation, formation of inflection point in main channel, and distribution near floodplain junction which are due to high Reynolds number. Through the study applicability of the Preston tubes are also verified and characteristics of bed shear distribution in compound channels are suggested with Reynolds number and depth ratio.
The ion-exchange method for the purification of primary coolant has been used broadly in PWR(pressurized water reactor)-type nuclear power plants due to its high decontamination efficiency, simple system, and easy operation. However, its non-selective removal of metal and non-radionuclides shortens its life, resulting in the generation of a large amount of waste ion-exchange resin. In this study, the feasibility of electrodeionization (EDI) was investigated for the purification of primary cooling water using synthetic solutions under various experimental conditions as an alternative method for the ion exchange. The results shows that as the feed flow-rate increased, the removal efficiency increased and the power consumption decreased. The removal rate was observed as a 1000 decontamination factor(DF) at a nearly constant level. For the synthetic solution of 3 ppm TDS (Total Dissolved Solid), the power consumption was 40.3 mWh/L at 2.0 L/min of feed flow rate. The higher removal rate of metal species and lower power consumption were obtained with greater resin volume per diluting compartment. However, the flow rate of the EDI process decreased with the elapsed time because of the hydrodynamic resistivity of resin itself and resin fouling by suspended solids. Thus, the ion-exchange resin was replaced by an ion-conducting spacer in order to overcome the drawback. The system equipped with the ion-conducting spacer resolved the problem of the decreasing flow rate but showed a lower efficiency in terms of the power consumption, the removal rate of metal species and current efficiency. In the repeated batch operation, it was found that the removal efficiency of metal species was stably maintained at DF 1000.

The hydrodynamic behaviors of the clarifier with an interior baffle in a wastewater treatment plant was investigated by using a radiotracer $^{99m}Tc$(30 40 mCi) to verify the results of CFD(computational fluid dynamics) modelling in the previous study. The clarifier model was manufactured with consideration to the hydraulic similarity(1/21) of a real plant($L{\times}W{\times}H:2.6{\times}0.4{\times}0.2m$). By installation of an interior baffle to the clarifier, the strong density current at the bottom of the clarifier decreased substantially and increased the area of sludge settling zone, which were visualized successfully from the radiotracer experiment. Also the portion of short circuit stream changed from 48 % to 32 % and the mean residence time of sludge decreased from 940 sec to 810 sec, which corresponds to the results of CFD modelling. As a result, it is anticipated that radiotracer technology can be used as an important tool for designing new wastewater treatment plants and verifying their performances after structural modifications.
River is able to change by various environmental factors. In order to conduct restoration design of abandoned river channels, it is necessary to evaluate the river through the analysis of past and present river channels. River evaluation requires various data, such as geometry, hydraulic and hydrology, but there is a lot of difficulty to understand topographical information of river change on time and space due to a lack of past data by domestic conditions. This study analyzes the changes in past and present river channels and examines the applicability of river channel evaluation through image analysis using aerial photographs and 1918 year's map. Aerial photograph analysis was conducted by applying the image analysis method and GIS analysis method on Cheongmicheon. As a result of this analysis, we have quantitatively identified the form and size of abandoned channels, changes in the vertical-section and cross-section length of rivers, and micro-landform changes. More importantly, we verified that morphological changes in sandbars due to artificial straightening are important data in identifying the state of current river channels. In these results, although image analysis technique has limitations in two-dimensional information from aerial photographs, we were able to evaluate the changes in river channel morphology after artificial maintenance of the river.
In this study, various types of nutrient models were tested by using two tears's water quality data collected from the stormwater wetland in Korea. Based on results, most important factor influencing nitrogen removal was hydraulic loading rate, which indicates that surface area of wetland is more important than its volumetric capacity, and model proposed by WEF was found to give a least error between measured and calculated values. For the phosphorus, in case assuming a power relationship between rate constant and temperature, the best prediction result were obtained, but temperature was most sensitive parameter affecting phosphorus removal. In addition, denitrification was always a limiting step for the nitrogen removal in this particular wetland mostly due to the lack of carbon source and high dissolved oxygen concentration. In this paper, several alternatives to improve nitrogen removal, including proper arrangement and designation of wetland elements and use of floating plants or synthetic fiber mat to control oxygen level and to capture the algal particles were proposed and discussed.
Surface of hydrophobic media was modified to become hydrophilic by ion beam irradiation. Fixed bed biofilm reactors packed with or without surface modification were used to remove organics, nitrogen, and phosphorus from sewage. This system composed of anoxic/oxic cycles to increase the nutrient removal. A cylindrical polyethylene was used as a packing media in this study. With 12 hours of hydraulic retention time (HRT), the reactors with and without surface modification showed 95% and 92% $COD_{cr}$ removal, respectively. Both reactors showed over 95% $COD_{cr}$ removals for a longer HRT of 16 hours. Nitrogen removal ranged 54.8% to 70.2% for the surface modified system and 57.5% to 76.5% for the non-modified system under same condition. Finally, phosphorus removal ranged 59.4% to 69.8% for the surface modified system and 51.3% to 63.4% for the non-modified system under same condition. From this study organics and phosphorus were better removed in using surface modified media and vice versa for nitrogen removal.

The PBA of ship weapon system should be installed and operated under harsh environmental conditions and so it should be highly reliable to endure the mission profiles during its entire lifetime. In the case of PBA failure during operation, rapid maintenance is highly likely to be difficult due to problems such as supply of parts, which can have a devastating effect on the mission. In order to validate the reliability of PBA, a series of tests are performed with PBA samples, but they require time, testing facilities, samples, expenses and failure analysis if failed. The reliability of PBA is predicted on the basis of specifications such as MIL-HDBK-217F, but this specification does not take into account failure mechanisms for specific design details, environment and usage, interconnects and its characteristics that drive many failures of PBA in the field. Therefore, this study predicts the reliability of PBA using an RPA tool and proposes the RPA methodology as a validation process at the design stage. With RPA, it is now possible to achieve design validation including inherent failure mechanism, identification of weakest link, alternative design options, and test plan development.

The water quantity by intake station as well as the tributary flow discharge acting as sink or source were added to the main flow rate in the present study and RMA-2 and RMA-4 models were applied to the reach from Pal-dang dam to Jam-sil submerged weir to investigate the influence of water supply withdrawal on the river flow and water quality. The numerical results revealed that the water supply withdrawal from 5 intake stations located upstream of Jam-sil submerged weir changed the total flow rate and therby induced different hydraulic characteristics in terms of water surface elevation and velocity. The changed flow field by the inclusion of water intake quantity led to the variation of water quality. By the consideration of the water supply withdrawal, the velocity structure was significantly disturbed by the outflowing flow condition nearby Gu-ui, Ja-yang, and Pung-nap intake stations. Furthermore, the mean velocity was lowered by 25% and the stage upstream of Gu-ui station rose upto 1.5 cm compared with the result by exclusion of water intake. In case of no water withdrawal, the distribution of BOD concentration was parallel throughout the domain. However, when the water withdrawal is considered, the distribution of BOD concentration nearby the Gu-ui, Am-sa, and Ja-yang station was signifiantly changed. In addition, the BOD concentration including the intake stations showed higher value at the downstream of the reach due to the loss of the discharge by water withdrawal effect. It is concluded that both the inflow and outflow discharges from tributaries and water intake stations should be included in the numerical simulation to analyze the hydrodynamic behaviors and mixing characteristics more accurately.

A cooling system is indispensable for the fossil and nuclear power plants which produce electricity by rotating the turbines with hot steam. A cycle of the typical cooling system includes pumping of seawater at the intake pump house, exchange of heat at the condenser, and discharge of hot water to the sea. The cooling type of the nuclear power plants in Korea recently evolves from the conventional surface intake/discharge systems to the submerged intake/discharge systems that minimize effectively an intake temperature rise of the existing plants and that are beneficial to the marine environment by reducing the high temperature region with an intensive dilution due to a high velocity jet and density differential at the mixing zone. It is highly anticipated that the future nuclear power plants in Korea will accommodate the submerged cooling system in credit of supplying the lower temperature water in the summer season. This study investigates the approach flow patterns at the velocity caps and discharge flow patterns from diffusers using the 3-D computational fluid dynamics code of $FLOW-3D^{(R)}$. The approach flow test has been conducted at the velocity caps with and without a cap. The discharge flow from the diffuser was simulated for the single-port diffuser and multi-ports diffuser. The flow characteristics to the velocity cap with a cap demonstrate that fish entrainment can significantly be minimized on account of the low vertical flow component around the cap. The flow pattern around the diffuser is well agreed with the schematic diagram by Jirka and Harleman.

Anaerobic Digestion - Thermophilic Oxic Process(ADTOP) has been known to be one way reducing and composting of organic wastes without draining or forming excess sludge. It could be completely performed by the evaporation of water using the bio-energy from the microbial degradation of organic. In the present study the complete treatment of Chinese restaurant wastes was conducted and utility of bio-energy produced from the ADTOP was estimated. Base on results, it could be concluded as follows; 1) chinese restaurant wastes could be completely treated using the TOP without draining or excess sludge. Maximum volumetric loading rate was determined as $55.0kg-garbage/m^3$. Input water was almostly evaporated and 90.5% of carboneous organic wastes was conversed to carbondioxide. 2)The optimum volumetric loading rate which is acceptable to maintain over $55^{\circ}C$ in the anaerobic digester was determined as $45kg-garbage/m^3{\cdot}d$. 3) The optimum HRT was at least over 10 days in order to maintain about $50^{\circ}C$ in the anaerobic digester using bio-energy produced from TOP. Therefore the utilization of bio-energy produced from TOP could be used in the process which had long HRT such as the anaerobic digestion. 4) The efficiency of anaerobic digester rate were over 90% by the ADTOP under the organic loading rate of $1.1kg-COD/m^3{\cdot}d$, 50kg-Chinese restaurant garbage and $250{\ell}/m^3{\cdot}min$ of the aeration rate.
