The two distinctive clinical features of varicella-zoster virus (VZV) are varicella (chickenpox) by primary infection and zoster (singles) by the reactivation of latent infection. In addition to the two typical clinical symptoms mentioned above, diverse clinical manifestations have been reported as a result of VZV reactivation, including chronic radicular pain without rash, visual loss, facial palsy, dysphagia, sore throat, odynophagia, otalgia, hearing loss, dizziness, headache, hemiplegia, etc. Most of these symptoms are derived from neuropathy and vasculopathy of affected nerves and arteries. Diagnosis of VZV disease can be difficult if there is no appearance of a skin rash during development of atypical symptoms. In addition to natural infection, vaccination and anti-viral agent treatment have influenced the changes of epidemics and clinical presentations of varicella and zoster. In this article, diverse clinical manifestations caused by VZV reactivation, particular without skin rash, are reviewed.

Blunt trauma, drugs, infection, congenital anomalies of the pancreaticobiliary system, and multisystem diseases are the main causes of acute pancreatitis in children. Various viruses can cause acute pancreatitis, but varicella-induced pancreatitis is unusual and generally observed in adults or immunocompromised patients. We report a rare case of acute pancreatitis associated with varicella-zoster virus infection in a 6-year-old immunocompetent girl. The patient initially presented complaining of severe abdominal pain and repetitive vomiting. The patient had multiple cutaneous crusts that has been caused by preceding varicella infection and had elevated values of serum amylase and lipase. Abdominal ultrasonography demonstrated swelling of the pancreas and pancreatic duct dilatation, findings which were compatible with acute pancreatitis. The patient's clinical and laboratory abnormalities were completely normalized through conservative treatment consisting of fasting, total parenteral nutrition, and analgesic therapy.

A genome contains all genetic information of an organism. Within a specific species, unique traits appear for each individual, which can be identified by analyzing nucleotide sequences. Many Genome-Wide Associations Studies have been carried out to find genetic associations and cause of diseases from slightly different base among the individuals. It is important to identify occurrence of slight variations for polymorphisms of individuals. In this paper, we introduce an analysis and visualization tool for specific variation pattern identification of polymorphisms in nucleotide sequences and show the validity of the tool by applying it to analyzing nucleotide sequences of subcultured pOka strain of varicella-zoster virus. The tool is expected to help efficiently explore allele frequency variations and genetic factors within a species.
