  • Artificial neural networks are efficient computing techniques that are widely used to solve complex problems in many fields. In this study, in order to predict tunnel-induced ground movements, Tunnel Behavior Prediction System (TBPS) was developed by using these artificial neural networks model, based on a Held instrumentation database (i.e. crown settlement, convergence, axial force of rock bolt, compressive and shear stress of shotcrete, stress of concrete lining etc.) obtained from 193 location data of 31 different tunnel sites where works are completed. The study and test of the network were performed by Back Propagation Algorithm which is known as a systematic technique for studying the multi-layer artificial neural network. The tunnel behaviors predicted by TBPS were compared with monitored data in the tunnel sites and numerical analysis results. This study showed that the values obtained from TBPS were within allowable limits. It is concluded that this system can effectively estimate the tunnel ground movements and can also be used f3r tunneling feasibility study, and basic and detailed design and construction of tunnel.

  • This study examined the durability and method for making a mockup of bobsled tracks for constructing a bobsled stadium, which is a sport in the Winter Olympics. As bobsleigh games are very fast and dangerous, a safety design for players and a precise construction using highly efficient shotcrete is necessary. Moreover, a general molding construction is difficult because bobsleigh tracks are composed of various curves and slopes, and it is necessary to construct them using high-strength and high durability materials. The developed method for making a mockup and performing durability evaluation of bobsleigh tracks through this research will be applied in the construction of the 2018 Pyeongchang Winter Olympics Sliding centre and bobsleigh tracks using domestic techniques.

  • A reliable analysis of tunnelling is needed to accomplish technically sound design and safe and economical construction. For the reliable analysis, a series of procedures of construction which include excavation and support stages must be considered. In this study, rock-support response behavior is studied and simulated in 2-D and 3-D finite element methods. Through the analysis of rock-support response behavior, the effects of the properties of shotcrete on the load distribution ratio can be quantified. The load distribution ratios for different rock types, different unsupported spans and various lateral earth pressure coefficients can be determined from the results of the 3-D finite element analysis. This load distribution ratios can be applied to a practical tunnel design through understanding of the trend of those various factors affecting the rock-support interaction.

  • Although many researches related to monitoring and automatic measuring devices for early warning system during slope failure have been carried out in Korea and aboard, most of the researches have installed measuring devices on the slope surface, and there are only few researches about warning systems that can detect and warn before slope failure and disaster occurs. In this study, slope failure simulation experiment was performed by attaching sensors to rock bolts, and initial slope behavior characteristics during slope failure were analyzed. Also, the experiment results were compared and reviewed with varied slope conditions, i.e. shotcrete slope and natural slope, and varied material conditions, i.e. GFRP and steel rock bolt. This study can be used as a basic data in development of warning and alarm system for early evacuation through early detection and warning before slope failure occurs in steep slopes and slope failure vulnerable areas.

  • Due to the acceleration of road construction, the number and extension of tunnels are increasing every year. A lot of research has been done on the collapse of tunnels, but research on the invert heaving is insufficient. Therefore, in this study, a sensitivity analysis was performed using a geotechnical general-purpose program to analyze the effect of the invert curvature of a tunnel excavated on the soft ground. As a result, it was quantitatively confirmed that the stability of a tunnel was increased as the curvature of the tunnel invert was increased so that the safety factor was calculated to be large regardless of the ground conditions and the thickness of the support. In addition, it was confirmed that the stability of the tunnel was increased by reducing the convergence of the tunnel and the maximum bending stress supported by shotcrete. Therefore, when a tunnel is excavated on soft ground, it is believed that applying a curvature to the invert will increase the stability of the tunnel.

  • In this paper it was focused on the characteristics of displacement and stress due to the construction of diagonal twin tunnel. In this research, the characteristics have been analyzed with the presumption that the tunnel's diameter (D) is 13m and the ground was formed by weathered rock. In analysis, the width of pillar is 2.0D, 2.5D, 3.0D, the height of soil cover is 3D, 4D, 5D, and the installation angle of diagonal twin tunnel has been changed into $15^{\circ}$, $30^{\circ}$, $45^{\circ}$. And the program used in this analysis is FLAC which is widely used in solution problems of ground engineering in order to gain and analyze occurring shotcrete and rockbolt stress and nearby ground displacement according to pillar width, the height of soil cover and installation angle of diagonal twin tunnel. As a result, in the weathered rock grounds, when the width of pillar is more than 2.0D, the height of soil cover is over 5.0D, and the installation angle of diagonal twin tunnel is lower, they lessen effects on the ground and favorable on the stability of tunnel.

  • The construction of the tunnel portal should be careful because cover depth is shallow and it is difficult to exhibit the arching effect. Tunnel stability may be reduced with additional embankment above the portal of tunnel. In this study, in order to examine the stability of the tunnel according to additional embankment above the portal of tunnel, numerical analysis was performed while changing the ground conditions and height of embankment. As a result of the numerical analysis, it was found that the allowable flexural compressive stress of shotcrete and allowable axial force of rockbolts were exceeded when the height of additional embankment was 12 m in rock mass rating V. When considering the displacement, the range of the plastic region and the behavior of the support materials, the tunnel stability seems to be greatly reduced if the height of additional embankment above the portal of tunnel exceeds 10 m.

  • Recently, the frequency of damage to slopes for highways, railways, and complexes has been increasing according to abnormal climates such as heavy rainfall or snowfall. Rapid Hardening Composite Mat (RHCM) could be a satisfactory alternative because it has the advantages that large-scale earthwork is not essential and the period for restoration is minimized. Also, this method does not require heavy machines and a phase of maintenance for slopes against the shotcrete method or planted slope protection, which are representative slope protection methods. Furthermore, the curing time is shorter than Geosynthetic Concrete Composite Mat (GCCM). Therefore, RHCM could be useful for emergency restoration work. Thus, in this study, the strength and duration of RHCM are estimated, compared, and analyzed with GCCM. As a result of the laboratory test, the strength of RHCM is greater 51%, and the duration is larger 69% than GCCM.

  • The estimation of surface settlement, ground behavior and tunnel displacement are the main factors in urban tunnel design with shallow depth and unconsolidated soil. On deformation analysis of shallow tunnel, it is important to identify possible deformation mechanism of shear bands developing from tunnel shoulder to the ground surface. This paper investigated the effects of key design parameter affecting deformation behavior by numerical analysis using nonlinear model incorporating the reduction of shear stiffness and strength parameters with the increment of the maximum shear strain after the initiation of plastic yielding. Numerical parametric studies are carried out to consider the reduction of shear stiffness and strength parameters, horizontal stress ratio, cohesion and shotcrete thickness.

  • This paper presents a new approach of closing the tunnel face with sprayed concrete to reduce the stress at the tunnel face and displacement occurring at the ground surface during tunnel excavation. In order to carry out this research, the experimental and numerical studies are performed. In the experimental study, the model tests are carried out according to the closure ratio of tunnel face, tunnel depth and tunnel excavation length. The model test results are analyzed and interpreted by numerical calculation in order to verify both results obtained from experimental and numerical studies. It is clearly found that the tunnel face stability is decreased in decreasing the closure ratio of tunnel face. The results also show that the tunnel face is stable when the closure ratio of tunnel face is larger than 80%. This research will be very useful to develop the economical tunnel face closing system.
