  • This survey is to compare the handwashing recognition and practice of middle school students in Korea and Nepal, according to the report that handwashing practice rate of Korea was significantly lower than those of developed countries. The handwashing survey tools of Korean CDC were used. As a result of analyzing data using SPSS/Win 23.0, there were differences in residential state, disease experience, and parental education level of subjects, handwashing practice was significantly higher in Nepal while higher handwashing recognition of Korea(p<.001). Among contents of handwashing practice, there were significant differences in drying methods, number of it with soap, time required, number of receiving education for it, and education methods. It is necessary to take measures to increase handwashing practice rate of Korea, while Nepal's is increasing by supplementing equipment and education even their handwashing recognition was low. This results are from a few middle school students in both countries by convenience sampling, therefore it is needed repeated studies with wider range of subjects.

This study aimed to confirm relevant factors that affect practice of hand washing to find out approach for improvement of hand washing practice rate after COVID-19. Using the 2020 Community Health Survey data. As methods of research, this study searched for relevance by carrying out univariate logistic regression analysis, and also conducted multivariate logistic regression analysis using significant variables. Analysis results show that hand washing practice rate was high in females, well-educated, low age, cities, office job, the more people wear a face mask indoors, the higher the cycle of ventilation, the higher the cycle of disinfection and the more people maintain healthy distance. This study understood factors related to the rate of hand washing practice and results can be used as basic data for COVID-19 quarantine guidelines.

  • Objectives: Handwashing is one of the most effective methods to prevent the spread of infectious diseases. This study assessed the related factors and reasons for not practicing handwashing at school among adolescents. Methods: We analyzed data collected from 57,303 adolescents who participated in the 15th Korea Youth Risk Behavior Survey 2019. Results: The proportions of not washing hands "before meals at school" and "after using the toilet at school" were 15.9% and 4.4%, respectively. The adjusted odds ratio for not washing hands before meals at school was significantly higher in girls (Odds Ratio [OR]=1.52, 95% Confidence Intervals [CI]=1.42-1.63), metropolitan city (OR=1.32, 95% CI=1.11-1.56), city (OR=1.29, 95% CI=1.08-1.54), higher grade, higher academic performance, lower economic status, not handwashing at home (OR=14.36, 95% CI=13.37-15.42), and without annual personal hygiene education (OR=1.41, 95% CI=1.33-1.49). Reasons for not washing hands at school among adolescents who do not wash their hands before meals at school included 'it is bothersome (52.3%)', 'there is no soap or hand sanitizer (13.8%)', and 'I do not feel the need (9.5%)'. Conclusions: Improving handwashing before meals at school among adolescents requires raising awareness of the importance of handwashing before meals and establishing a suitable environment and handwashing-encouraging culture.

  • This study was done to identify the effects of the hand washing procedure poster on the hand washing behaviors after Mers outbreak. Method: This study was conducted by observing a total of 370 people(185 people in no- poster zone, 185 people in poster zone) who used the public restroom. Results: As a result of comparing the hand washing with and without the poster, the subjects who washed their hands with the poster around were 83.2%, which was higher than the 47% of the subjects without the poster. The Time spent on the hand washing was similar between the groups with or without the poster around. Also only 3.3% of the subjects actually completed the entire 6 procedures of hand washing. The subjects who finished more than 4 procedures out of 6 were 17% from the group with the poster around, and 10.3% from the group without. Conclusion: The hand washing poster was effective in encouraging the behavior itself, but not specifically in the right way during the ideal time nor the right procedures. Therefore, verbal instructions made every time washing hands or more visual effective posters are required to enhance the hand washing procedures.

Methods: In 16 metropolitan cities and province of the Korea, the students who from fourth grade of elementary school to third grade of high school were surveyed by personal interviews and an web-based online survey from 5 to 25 September, 2014. We analyzed data with chi-square test and logistic regression analysis. Results: Common cold, diarrhea, and eye infections were more prevalent among students in higher grade than lower grade. In particular, common cold was more prevalent among girls than boys, using hand sanitizer than washing with soaps, and students who wash the dorsal side of hand than not wash the dorsal side of hand. Conclusions: Higher-grade students showed low status of hand washing practice. Hand washing was determined as the fact which influences to increase the prevention of communicable disease such as common cold. Considering the fact that youth groups have higher risk of being infected due to their group life, schools are recommended to provide adequate educations regarding proper hand washing practice with soap.

  • The purpose of this study was to evaluate the correlation between hand washing practice and hand washing on the health belief model among dental practitioners. A self-reported questionnaire was completed by each 140 dental practitioners in dental clinics, general and university dental hospitals. The data were analyzed statistically with t-test, 1-way ANOVA, Pearson's correlation coefficient test(${\alpha}=.05$). The hand washing practice showed a quantitative linear relationship(p<0.01) of r=0.285 with the hand washing on health belief. In order to prevent hospital infection of dental practitioners working in dental clinics or general and university dental hospitals, health beliefs about hand washing consisting of perceived susceptibility, perceived seriousness, perceived benefit, perceived barriers, and cues to action in infection control education should be considered.

  • Purpose: This study aimed to analyze factors affecting the handwashing performance of nursing students using the health belief model, self-efficacy, and handwashing attitudes. Methods: Data were collected using structured questionnaires in 2018. 223 students enrolled in nursing college participated in the questionnaire, which consisted of four sections: health belief in hand washing, self-efficacy, hand washing attitude, and general handwahsing characteristics. Data were analyzed using t-test, ANOVA, correlation coefficient and multiple regression analysis with SPSS 21.0 statistical programs. Results: The significant predictors affecting proper hand cleansing were perceived benefits and motivation of health belief model, handwashing time and frequency, and handwashing attitude. Out of these significant variables, perceived benefits was shown to be the strongest predictor. Conclusion: The findings suggest that periodic and steady hand washing training programs need to be implemented in order to improve handwashing practices of nursing students. Such handwashing education programs should include content that sensitizes the benefits of hand washing and provides information on how to carry out hand washing in detail.
