A Study on the Cultural Meanings of Underclothes Advertisements in Women's Magazines (여성잡지에 나타난 속옷광고의 문화적 의미 연구)

  • This study examines the cultural meanings of underclothes advertisements through the analysis of advertisement messages appeared in women's magazines of Korea which are , and published between 1965 and 1999 mainly targeting the women at the age of 20s through 40s. The method of study is mainly qualitative with subsidiary citations from the results of content analysis. The advertisement messages identified in underclothes advertisements are 1) body care, 2) gender role, 3) commercialization of eroticism, 4) feminism, 5) men's social status and masculinity, 6) social issues of concern and ideologies of the time. Advertisements produce a new meaning through a dynamic mixture of the advertisement's visual and verbal factors. Such a new meaning then can become a part of culture and therefore we can obtain insights of a society culture by analyzing the advertisement messages of underclothes advertisements. Advertisements bring definite changes to the culture through long-term and implicit influences on the constituents of the culture.

A Study of Attitudes on Advertisement and Brand Preference of Underware (속옷광고에 대한 태도와 상표선호도에 대한 연구)

  • We investigated the relationship between the attitudes and brand preference on the expression techniques of advertisement of underwears and actual buying. A total of 233 females living in Seoul and Taejon were surveyed to compare these points of five major underwear brands (Vivien, Ravora, Wacoal, Calvin Klein, Let'xes).The survey showed that the responders reacted more positively to the revolutionary advertising techniques of the Calvin Klein, and Let'xes than to the more conservative techniques of the Vivien, Ravora, and Wocoal.The most positive response was obtained from the Calvin klein's revolutionary techniques while the most negative response from the Ravora. The most preferred brand was the vivien, followed by the Calvin Klein, Wacoal, Ravora, and Let'xes. The degree of preference varied according to the demographic variables like age, schooling, income, occupation, and residential area. As for the motive of preference, the Calvin Klein ranked best in respect to shape, quality, advertisement, and comfortability. The price factor was best for the Ravora. The Let'xes ranked worst in all aspects. However, there was discrepancy between the attitudes on advertisement and the actual buying, this implying that the attitudes on advertisement did not seem to directly affect actual purchasing behavior.

A Study on the Changes of Appearances and Contents of Underclothes Advertisements (속옷광고의 구조 및 내용의 변화에 관한 연구 -1965~1999의 여성잡지를 중심으로-)

  • This study looks into the appearances and contents of undercloths advertisements by analyzing them appeared in women\`s magazines of Korea, which are , and published between 1965 and 1999 mainly targeting the women at the age of 20s through 40s. This study leads to the following conclusions : 1. Most of advertisements use 1 or 2 pages of the magazines with colored pictures. 2. The most frequently advertised underclothes is brassieres and white and pastel are dominant colors. Also, spandex and cotton are the most frequently appeared fabrics in the advertisement. 3. Professional Korean female models in twenties are the most favored choice for those underclothes advertisements and those models dominantly face their fore part with showing the body parts higher than their knees. Solo model appear in most of the advertisements and independent appearance is dominant. 4. In the visual expression of the advertisements explicitly show the products for visual expression, whereas verbal expressions mostly emphasize the benefits to be obtained from the underclothes advertised. 5. Advertisement appeals are mainly base on readers\` reason rather than sensibility.

A Study on the Degree of Self-monitoring, Situation and the Appeal Type of Advertising Impact on Inner (자기-감시, 상황, 광고소구유형이 속옷 구매행동에 미치는 영향에 관한 연구)

  • The purpose of this study was to investigate the degree of self-monitoring (SM), the task situation and the appeal type of advertising impact on consumer behavior: in inner wear purchase. Information for the study was obtained with the use of experimental design. the experimental materials for the study were two-type inner wear advertisements (image appeal Ad/product appeal Ad). The subjects were 270, who were randomly sampled women undergraduate students in Korea, and main-test subjects (70 high SM subjects/69 low SM subjects) were assigned to the cells of 2 (self usage/gift-giving)x2 (quality appeal Ad/image appeal Ad). According to the 2x(2$\times$2) mixed factorial design, the level of SM score, the type of task situation score and the level of appeal type of advertising score were compared and tested by analysis of ANOVA. The results of experiment were as follows: 1. Experimental 1. the results showed the product preference on inner wear was the significant 3-way interaction effects among the degree of SM, the task situation, and the appeal type of advertising as well as the significant main effects of the appeal type of advertising. That is, the situation impact differs from the appeal type of advertising according to the degree of SM. 2. Experimental ll. the results showed the purchase intention on inner wear was the significant 2-way interaction effects between the appeal type of advertising and the task situation as well as the significant main effects of the appeal type of advertising and the task situation. That is, there is considerable difference in gift-giving situation rather than in self- usage situation according to the appeal type of advertising.

Preference Tendency to Western Images through Advertising Pictures (광고를 통해 본 여대생의 서구 이미지 선호경향)

  • The purpose of this study was to investigate the female college students' preferences to the images of both western and eastern pictures, and positive/negative perception on to the model's nationality in the apparel advertizing pictures of fashion magazines. 100 students participated in the survey, and 20 stimulus pictures were shown to them. The results were as follows: The female college students preferred the western images than the eastern images in the pictures of bedroom, palace and beer, while they preferred the eastern images in the pictures of snack and famous drawings of a beauty. But they showed more positive attitude to all the western models' advertizement pictures than the eastern models' ones, in casual wear, formal wear, watches and inner-wear divisions except in men's formal wear division. This meant that the perception of female students on western images was positive and it seems stimulating the consumers preferences of brand images.

  • The purpose of this study is to review, from the point of view that the advertisements are cultural system which transfers the life styles or value systems of a certain time, the expression styles by analyzing written clothing described in underwear advertisements of women's magazines targeting the women aged from twenties to forties, that advertisements are trying to represent. Accordingly, this study is intended to provide the underwear industry with useful information for implementing sales strategies by verifying the determining factors in selecting and wearing of underwear. The result of this study is as follows : First, the headlines of advertisements could be analyzed through merchandise, situation and consumers and were categorized by the fourteen different expression styles such as functionality, sense of beauty, tradition, future, family, exotic, globalization, environment, sensuality, youth, individuality, health, newness and top-class. Therefore, the advertisers choose and provide the various expression styles in order to maximize the delivering power of the underwear advertisements. Second, frequently used expression styles have been analyzed through frequency analysis of expression styles and, as a result, the important factors of choosing and wearing underwear have been verified. In addition, the fact that the ways of thinking of modern society and value systems are implied in the expression of underwear advertisements has been found.
