Thermo-elastic-plastic analyses used in solving plate forming process are often computationally expensive. To obtain an optimal process of line heating typically requires numerous iterations between the simulation and a finite element analysis. This process often becomes prohibitive due to the amount of computer time required for numerical simulation of line heating process. Therefore, a new techniques that could significantly reduce the computer time required to solve a complex analysis problem would be beneficial. In this paper, we considered factors that influence the bending effect by line heating and developed inference engine by using the concept of artificial neural network. To verify the validity of the neural network, we used results obtained from numerical analysis. We trained the neural network with the data made from numerical analysis and experiments varying the structure of neural network, in other words varying the number of hidden layers and the number of neurons in each hidden layers. From that we concluded that if the number of neurons in each hidden layers is large enough neural network having two hidden layers can be trained easily and errors between exact value and results obtained from trained network are not so large. Consequently, if there are enough number of training pairs, artificial neural network can infer similar results. Based on the numerical results, we applied the artificial neural network technique to deal with mechanical behavior of line heating at simulation stage effectively.

The purpose of this study is to investigate the influence of the cold reduction rate and an ultrasonic fatigue test (UFT) on the fatigue behaviors of STS 304L. The tensile strength, yield strength, hardness value and fatigue limit in the UFT fatigue test linearly increased as thickness decreased from 1.5 mm to 1.1 mm, as the cold reduction rate of STS 304L increased. As a result of the UFT fatigue test (R = -1) of four specimens, the fatigue limit of the S-N curve formed a knee point in the region of $10^6$, and the 2nd fatigue limit caused by giga cycle fatigue did not appeared. In the case of t = 1.1 mm, the highest fatigue limit was 345 MPa, which was 64.3% higher than the original material (t = 1.5 mm). As a result of the UFT fatigue test of STS 304L, many small surface cracks occurred, grown, coalesced while tearing.

For effective utilization of butter clam shell as a natural calcium resource, the optimal conditions for preparation of calcium acetate (BCCA) with high solubility were determined using response surface methodology (RSM). The polynomial models developed by RSM for pH, solubility, and yield were highly effective in describing the relationships between factors (P<0.05). Increased molar ratio of calcined powder (BCCP) from butter clam shell led to reduction of solubility, yield, color values, and overall quality. Critical values of multiple response optimization to independent variables were 2.70 M and 1.05 M for acetic acid and BCCP, respectively. The actual values (pH 7.04, 93.0% for solubility and 267.5% for yield) under optimization conditions were similar to predicted values. White indices of BCCAs were in the range of 89.7~93.3. Therefore, color value was improved by calcination and organic acid treatment. Buffering capacity of BCCAs was strong at pH 4.88 to 4.92 upon addition of ~2 mL of 1 N HCl. Calcium content and solubility of BCCAs were 20.7~22.8 g/100 g and 97.2~99.6%, respectively. The patterns of fourier transform infrared spectrometer and X-ray diffractometer analyses from BCCA were identified as calcium acetate monohydrate, and microstructure by field emission scanning electron microscope showed an irregular form.
The objective of this study is to investigate the removal characteristics of cadmium(Cd) and lead(Pb) by adsorption on red mud and to study the adsorption characteristics of Cd and Pb using red mud activated by acid treatment and calcination. The adsorption of Cd and Pb on red mud was significantly achieved within 1hour and equilibrated after 5 hours. The adsorption capacity of Cd and Pb on red mud increased with increasing pH. The neutralization of red mud by distilled water or acid and the activation of red mud by acid treatment or calcination decreased the adsorption capacity of Cd and Pb on red mud, suggesting that Cd and Pb could be effectively eliminated by adsorption on red mud without any pretreatment or modification. Both Langmuir and Freundlich models were successfully applied to describe the adsorption behavior of Cd and Pb on red mud. The $q_m$ of Langmuir adsorption model and $K_F$ of Freundlich adsorption model were 5.230mg/g and 1.118mg/g for Cd and 22.222mg/g and 7.241mg/g for Pb, respectively.

A self-piercing rivet (SPR) is a mechanical component for joining dissimilar material sheets such as those of aluminum alloy and steel. Unlike conventional rivets, the SPR directly pierces sheets without the need for drilling them beforehand. However, the regular SPR can undergo buckling when it pierces a high-strength steel sheet, warranting the design of a helical SPR. In this study, the joining and forging processes using the helical SPR were simulated using the commercial FEM code, DEFORM-3D. High-tensile-strength steel sheets of different strengths were joined with aluminum alloy sheets using the designed helical SPR. The simulation results were found to agree with the experimental results, validating the optimal design of a helical SPR that can pierce high-strength steel sheets.
The objectives of this study were to examine the viscoelastic behaviour of stem samples of rice in force-relaxation and rheological model to represent its relaxation behaviour, and to study the effects of rate of deformation and initial deformation on the relaxation time. The results were as follows; 1. In the process of loading and unloading, there is any plastic deformation so called elasto-plastic hysterisis. 2. Loading and unloading of stem of rice for several cycles has also shown the reduction of plastic or residual deformation and work hardening. 3. The relaxation behaviour of stem of rice in compression may be described by a generalized Maxwell model consisting of three Maxwell units in parallel. The rheological equation of such a model is given as $$F(t)=C_1e^{{-t/{\tau}}_1}+C_2e^{{-t/{\tau}}_2}+C_3e^{{-t/{\tau}}_3}$$ 4. Force relaxation always increased with increasing rates of deformation and initial deformation.

The corrugated web is a plate that was manufactured with a corrugated shape. It is widely used in bridges, buildings, and culverts. A girder with a corrugated web can be crippled by local, in-plane compressive loads. Due to its high out-of-plane strength, however, a stiffener is usually not needed in trapezoidally corrugated plates, and the corrugated profile of the web can change the boundary condition of the edge load. Some researchers have studied the strength of the partial-edge loading of the trapezoidally corrugated web, but they have not considered the profile of corrugation in their studies. This paper investigates the influence of the corrugate profile. A parametric study was conducted on the shape parameter using the finite-element method. In this parametric study, the relationship between the corrugated shape and the partial-edge strength was also investigated by dividing the partial-edge strength into the web capacity and the flange capacity.

The objective of this study is optimization of extrusion process for preparation of pellet-type adsorbents employed with alum sludge. Effects of water content and methyl cellulose as a binder on the possibility of extrusion and physical properties of pellet-type adsorbents were investigated. The physical characteristics of the pellet-type adsorbents were studied using nitrogen adsorption and compression strength. With a ratio of water to sludge, 63/100, the adsorbent was well extruded with a cylindrical form and the compressive strength was the highest. With increasing methyl cellulose content, the compressive strength of pellet-type adsorbent could be improved, but the specific surface area decreased. The breakthrough time of the hydrogen sulfide could be increased significantly through calcination and the breakthrough capacity reached to 1,700 mg/g, which seems to be due to increase of surface area during calcination.
The automobile cowl cross bar which is a backbone frame part inside the cockpit module has been designed with more complex geometries recently due to demands of its enhanced functions and reduced weight of car. The traditional manufacturing process using welding between tubes with different diameters shows several problems such as poor mechanical characteristics and appearance, etc. Therefore, in this study, manufacturing processes which can eliminate the welding process were developed by applying one-piece metal forming processes such as tube drawing and radial swaging. As results, it was found that the one-piece manufacturing processes give better bending strength than the traditional welding process and the swaging process shows the lowest manufacturing cost.
