Pedophilia of Destiny in Memoirs of Hadrian of Marguerite Yourcenar (『하드리아누스의 회상록』에 나타난 운명의 파이도필리아)

  • Memoirs of Hadrian is a representative historical novel of Yourcenar which focuses on the personal history of the Emperor Hadrian of Rome and on his inner side. This study focuses on the love story of Hadrian and Antinous, and examines the specificity of their love in relation to the homosexual culture of ancient Greece, especially pedophilia. Through this topic, we have analyzed the causes of the tragic death of Antinous by capturing the progression of a cycle of pedophilia, a young boy (Eromenos), that grows into manhood as Erastes. This study defines the emperor's efforts to restore Antinous in his own way after a failed love, as a passion toward totality. Therefore, we see the two figures as a process of mythology in which the pie of tragic destiny is transferred to the myth of androgyny that becomes one body and one unity in pedophilia. We see this ancient myth as a concept contrasting with the sense of pedophilia of the emperor, who arbitrarily distinguished between love and pleasure, and believed that the affection calculated with calmness and indifference was a harmony of love. This study explains the intention of Yourcenar in her work to present the value of empathic love, especially sacredness and sublime, which should be a part of sensual love. It also reminds us of the importance of sagacity that a person with power must hold in the happiest and most loving moments of life.

  • This dissertation's object is to confirm the drastic popularity of La Peste of Albert Camus in Korea post-corona society using big data as the mean of inductive research. Analyzing news articles concerning Camus and investigating word frequency of the book La Peste will affirm the implications La Peste has on current Korea society as the outbreak spreads. As an analysis tool, Bigkinds of Korea Press Foundation and Nuagedemots, the French version of Word Cloud were used. For the past 30 years, Albert Camus has been known in Korea as the writer of L'étranger, but after the epidemic, he earned more reputation with La Peste. Compared to L'étranger that rebelled against the world's absurdity with ennui, La peste emphasizes the importance of resistance accompanied by solidarity. La peste conveys hope by depicting disastrous situations of citizens who confront the plague by organizing a health college. The novel delivers a lot of ethical inspiration to humanity in this exceptional circumstance of COVID-19.

A Study on Tradition Discourse in Korean Modern Drama between 1894 and 1910 (근대계몽기 한국연극사의 전통담론 연구 II)

  • This paper examines the tradition discourses in Korean modern drama of the late 19th and the early 20th. It focuses particularly on how key intellectuals differentiated the definition and interpreted 'Theater-Improvement' while they insisted on improving traditional performance. Tradition discourse focused on how to improve its contents of performances. There were three categories in discussion. First, Confucian intelligent insisted that traditional performance should be discarded, because it led to customs disorder among the public. Second, patriotic and progressive intellectuals led by Sin Chae-Ho(신채호) and Bak Yen-Sik(박은식), preferred the reformed content of traditional Korean performance dealing with historical heroes. in order to stimulate patriotism in the Korean. Third, Lee In-Jik(이인직) who had worked at a popular newspaper company in Japan tried to make 'New Theater' criticizing decayed officials and the stupid nation. He did not concern about the colonialism of Japan. In the late 19th and the early 20th in Korean modern drama history, tradition discourses faced different directions, dependent on their political positions, familiar foreign cultures, and their view on traditional cultures.

Discussion on Chilgeojiak and Discourse of Married Couples in Okhwangibong (<옥환기봉>에 나타난 칠거지악 논쟁과 부부 담론)

  • This study aims at examining the discussions of Chilgeojiak, meaning seven vices that can be valid causes of divorce, and the discourse on a married couple shown in the deposal of Empress Kwak in Okhwangibong. The study first analyzes the relationship between the incidents of expelling wives from homes in the Joseon Dynasty Era and the seven vices. The divorce of Yi Mi and Shin Taeyeong and the deposal of Queen Yun by King Seongjong show that the standards of judgement in most of the seven vices are unclear or controversial. In Okhwangibong, the arguments about Chilgeojiak are examined through the form of a novel with the expulsion of Empress Kwak. Empress Kwak was deposed by her husband, Emperor Kwangmu, due to jealousy and evil deeds. However, she was devoted to her parents-in-law, bore sons, and above all, she was the emperor's first wife and had gone through hard times and supported her husband. Considering these circumstances, her deposal is not quite agreeable. Readers have the same question, and this has become a cause of the creation of a series. The reasons for Empress Kwak's jealousy lie in Okhwan-a jade ring, the existence of Empress Eum, and the partial love of Emperor Kwangmu. That is, it is not Empress Kwak's fault. Additionally, unrealistic elements involved in Empress Kwak's evil deeds and the story structure focused on her work as factors that make readers support Empress Kwak. Therefore, Okhwangibong displays the realities regarding the discourse of husbands and wives of the era rather than the love in Okhwan, the jade ring, between Emperor Kwangmu and Empress Eum. Such understanding continues to exist in the following series and is a valid problem in the present time.

  • This paper is an attempt to examine historical drama which change rapidly in the manner of seeing history. Historical records are treated differently unlike in the field of modern history. Now the distinction between historical facts and fictions becomes no longer important. This change is affected by micro history, new cultural history, or post-modern history. History and narrative become interactive each other. In this respect they are no more historical drama. by Han Areum (director Suh Jae-hyung) represents this new trends. Of course, it doesn't suddenly pop up in 2005. It began in by Lee Yoon-Taek, was reinforced in by Kim Tae-Woong, and bloomed in . I intended to search important features of by following three. First is the interest about unimportant persons such as a maid of honor, an eunuch. In , they are the main characters. The author described much about those trivial people revealing the truth in different way of the existence. Second is the way of calling a past. In this piece, the past is not continuous. The past always appears at the stage by the present in the form of split which is imagination, recollection, revival. Third is a mixing genre. Comics, melodrama, and thrillers are all together in . This is a similar phenomenon to historical novel and movie of new trend. Strictly speaking, this piece isn't a history thriller. The accident of lost prince doesn't be treated importantly and the result isn't clear either. In this piece, detective genre is used for a symbol showing that writer pursuits the history, not the event. This represents well the characters of new historical drama because how historical facts are carefully recreated and constructed are important. It's enough to show the possibility to mix genre through comics and melodrama.

  • This article is to search the aspects of realization and the characteristics of Gasa, Sijo, Japga among the Korean poetry genre based on Chohan-gosa. Chohan-gosa is a basic literary and historic discourse for the medieval intellectuals. The story had been realized its own literary value at almost every genres such as Chinese literature, novels, Gasa, Japga and Sijo etc. I focused on Gasa, Sijo and Japga among the genres in this article. First of all, I subjected to Wumiin-ga enjoyed in a area of boudoir culture from Gasa based on Chohan-gosa. I catch the meaning that the text has a characteristic that popularized history and normative ideology are mingled in through it. In the case of Sijo, I focused on the Sijo which Xiang Yu is appeared in because Xiang Yu has been most quoted person from people of Chohan-gosa. Xiang Yu was described as a strong man[hero] or a man who part with the beauty Wu. I understand that this point is caused by the theatricalized characteristic of the place where Sijo have been played. For the last time, Japga is played with the characteristic of stimulative reediting of the familiar normative ideology. Chohan-ga is based on contexts of former discourse eohan-yeonui but it was not plagiarized. Chohan-ga was organized for the way which attracted the interest of the public and stimulated the emotion of the public through using popular imagery or intensifying the sorrow.

Even today, has been transformed and recreated into a variety of genres because its literary subject carry the universal emotions and win the sympathy. This manuscript examines modern poetry, modern novel and modern songs that consist of changed ancient song and looks modern writers' perspective about through characteristic that each of works has and then aims checking special situation and meaning that is implicit and recognizing the value of the original. As the has been recreated as modern poetry, it shows the current chaotic situation specifically by embodying it and actively seeks expressing human character, agony and longing, etc, by excluding factor of the original mythical interpretation. Also it rouses situation of reality as detained and repressed. , recreated as modern novel, expands narrative structure and shows portrait of various characters and speaks diverse human condition about reality and suggests plan for dealing with that. Basic emotions of the original is strongly passed to modern popular song . It makes us know that universal emotions which human has across generations can touch people transcending time and space and it is a fresh discovery and possibility that reaffirms the emotion of our people. Ancient song has been studied with emphasis on resignation and grief by focusing on the subject, simply parting and death. But recently, through transformation between a wide range of genres. it carries the spirit of the times that author toward, showing realistic and specific situations. Flexibility of ancient song is expected to continue its vitality transcending generations. Ancient song is assured that it can lead various aspects through active groping in era of change with a various possibility, that the original has, through communication between genres.

On the Newly-Discovered Gasa-Style (새로 발굴한 가사체 <춘향전>에 대하여)

  • This paper seeks to provide an overview on the newly-discovered manuscript in gasa style. It is significant in that the entire in gasa style has not been seen before, although occasionally scripts incorporate sijo or gasa as inserted songs. The author of this manuscript is believed to be Bae Hyung (裵珩: ?-?), who lived in Daegachon, Yongdu-Myun, Sunchon-Gun in Jeonra-Namdo Province. It is estimated that the manuscript was written in April of King Gojong 37 years (year 1900). This , so-called the Yang Jee-Uk Collection Script, applies Samdan Pyunun Daewoo Method (三段片言對偶法), using Jongbae style (縱排法) to over 27 pagesof the book. The author seems to have collected the main scenes of and changed them into gasa style. It is also possible to postulate that the author might have simply divided the lines to make it resemble the existing gasa style, as the original was already in the form of lyrics. There are a few mistakes found in the manuscript. They seem to have been made while the author was recording the sung P'ansori, rather than while copying from a different manuscript.

  • In the Book 1 starting with the narrative, metaphor, prediction, implication and paradox shows the relationship and its significance of Lee Hye-ran and Ho Hong-mae. Especially, these techniques show the key and topic of this work of 'jealousy' and its conflicting 'unjealousy' being materialized and its background are being provided, and they play narrative roles of showing in advance the numerous incidents that occur within the relationship between the main characters. Especially, jealousy and unjealousy are shown through the two main female characters: the unjealousy is connected to with Lee Hye-ran to show the extreme womanhood to lead the narrative. Meanwhile, the jealousy that occurs from the affection and obsession towards one person, it disables Ho Hong-mae from having rational judgment, and maleficence from the jealousy cannot be stopped. Eventually, in the process of finishing the narrative, the jealousy is regarded as the issue of the family, and the cause of the jealousy is emphasized the man not being faithful to the family. Therefore, the solutions to the issues occurred from the jealousy are shown explicitly that it is in the proper management of the family by the man. Therefore, the narrative of is progressed while jealousy and unjealousy conflict, and in the process of repenting the character that shows the perfect womanhood realized in the fiction world and the most radical jealousy through such womanhood, this novel can be regarded as showing the ethical lesson.

Gender Inequality in Equality Presented in Utopian Literature Looking Backward: 2000-1887 (유토피아 문학 『뒤를 돌아보며』에 제시된 평등 속 젠더 불평등)

  • This study examines gender inequality in the Utopian literature through Bellamy's novelLooking Backward: 2000-1887. Boston, USA, in 2000 is an equal society in which production and distribution are performed efficiently, and everyone can work with an equal opportunity without discrimination. But a closer look at the social structure shows that housework and parenting are predominantly women's duties, and the jobs that women and men can have are differentiating. Therefore, it is hard to say that true gender equality has been achieved. In addition, we could see that there were still remnants of gender inequality, such as showing the notion of beauty judged by male standards. However, Bellamy's Looking Backward: 2000-1887 is meaningful in that it improved women's status and suggested the direction and hope of social development in the 19th century. This study further examined whether these gender inequality factors have disappeared in modern society and confirmed that there remain many gender inequality factors. Therefore, we should all work together to improve the perception of members of society and make changes in social policies so that there is no discrimination between women and men so that we can truly become a gender-equal society.
