  • In this paper, it is discussed that the detection and tracking performance of the piecewise linear path underwater target is improved using clutter reduction algorithm in heavy clutter density environment. Through clutter reduction algorithm using Hough Transform, measurements which represent clutter features are removed and the performance of target tracking on the remaining measurements is demonstrated applying CMKF-L(Converted Measurement Kalman Filter with Linearization) as tracking filter. Algorithm performance test is conducted using simulation data and real sea-trial data and by applying the proposed algorithm in heavy clutter density environment, it is confirmed that the target is tracked consistently and stably with clutter rejected measurements.

  • In this paper, we apply a reverberation suppression method using difference of singular values to improve the short-distance underwater obstacle detection probability in reverberation environment induced by a linear frequency modulation signal. The reverberation suppression method using difference of singular values suppresses LFM reverberation based on subtracting the singular values for a reference beam, assumed to contain only the reverberation, from those for the current beam of interest, assumed to contain the reverberation and target echo. For the validation, the reverberation suppression method using difference of singular values is applied to real oceanic data, which are acquired using the cross type array.

  • As an effective weapon system for anti-submarine warfare, DIrectional Frequency Analysis and Recording (DIFAR) sonobuoy detects underwater targets via beamforming with three channels composed of an omni-direcitonal and two directional channels. However, ambient noise degrades the detection performance of DIFAR sonobouy in specific direction (0°, 90°, 180°, 270°). Thus, an ambient noise redcution technique is proposed for performance improvement of acoustic target detection of DIFAR sonobuoy. The proposed method is based on OTA (Order Truncate Average), which is widely used in sonar signal processing area, for ambient noise estimation and Wiener filtering, which is widely used in speech signal processing area, for noise reduction. For evaluation, we compare mean square errors of target bearing estmation results of conventional and proposed methods and we confirmed that the proposed method is effective under 0 dB signal-to-noise ratio.

  • Recently, long pulses are transmitted for target detection in active sonar application. Matched filtering implemented by simple convolution algorithm, requires massive computational power for long replica. The computational loads are reduced significantly by implementing the convolution in the frequency domain with overlap add method, but the performance degrades for specified input/output system delay which constrains the size of FFT function. For performance improvement, the replica could be partitioned into uniform blocks (FDL) by re-using IFFT operations, or variable blocks of increasing length (MC) by using the largest possible blocks to calculate the convolution. In this paper, by combining the strong points of the two methods, we propose a new filter partition structure that allows for further optimization of the previous two methods.

  • The compressive sensing model for range-Doppler estimation can be expressed as an under-determined linear system y = Ax. To find the solution of the linear system with the compressive sensing method, matrix A should be sufficiently incoherent and x to be sparse. In this paper, we propose a transmission waveform design method that maintains the bandwidth required by the sonar system while lowering the mutual coherence of the matrix A so that the matrix A is incoherent. The proposed method combines two methods of optimizing the sensing matrix with the alternating projection and suppressing unwanted frequency bands using the DFT (Discrete Fourier Transform) matrix. We compare range-Doppler estimation performance of existing waveform LFM(Linear Frequency Modulated) and designed waveform using the matched filter and the compressive sensing method. Simulation shows that the designed transmission waveform has better detection performance than the existing waveform LFM.

  • Sonar bearing accuracy is the correspondence between the target orientation predicted by sonar and actual target orientation, and is obtained from measurements. However, when measuring sonar bearing accuracy, many errors are included in the results because they are made at sea, where complex and diverse environmental factors are applied. In particular, parallax error caused by the difference between the position of the GPS receiver and the sonar sensor, and the time delay error generated between the speed of underwater sound waves and the speed of electromagnetic waves in the air have a great influence on the accuracy. Correcting these parallax errors and time delay errors without an automated tool is a laborious task. Therefore, in this study, we propose a sonar bearing accuracy measurement equipment with parallax error and time delay error correction. The tests were carried out through simulation data and real data. As a result of the test it was confirmed that the parallax error and time delay error were systematically corrected so that 51.7% for simulation data and more than 18.5% for real data. The proposed method is expected to improve the efficiency and accuracy of sonar system detection performance verification in the future.

  • In order to estimate the radial speed of an underwater object so-called target with active sonar, Continuous Wave (CW) pulse is generally used, but if a target is slow and at near distance, it is not easy to estimate the radial velocity of the target due to acoustic reverberation in the ocean. In 2017, Wang et al. utilized broadband signal of two Hyperbolic Frequency Modulation (HFM) pulses, which is known as a doppler-invariant pulse, with equal frequency band and in opposite sweep directions to overcome this problem and successfully estimate the radial speed of slow-moving nearby target. They demonstrated the estimation of the radial velocity with computer simulation using the parameters of two HFM starting time differences and receiving times. However, for it uses two HFM pulses with equal frequency, cross-correlation between the two pulses negatively affect the detection performance. To mitigate this cross-correlation effect, we suggest using two different band HFM with the opposite sweep directions. In this paper, a method of radial velocity estimation is derived and simulated using two HFM pulses with the pulse length of 1 second and bandwidth of 400 Hz. Applying the suggested method, the radial velocity was estimated with approximately 6 % of relative error in the simulation.

  • Passive Ranging Sonar (PRS) is a type of passive sonar consisting of three sub-array on the port and starboard, and has a characteristic of detecting a target and calculating a bearing and a distance. The bearing and distance calculation requires physical sub-array position information, and the bearing and distance accuracy performance are deteriorated when the position information of the sub-array is inaccurate. In particular, it has a greater impact on distance accuracy performance using plus value of two time-delay than a bearing using average value of two time-delay. In order to improve this, a study on sub-array position error estimation and error compensation is needed. In this paper, We estimate the sub-array position error based on enetic algorithm, an optimization search technique, and propose a method to improve the performance of distance accuracy by compensating the time delay error caused by the position error. In addition, we will verify the proposed algorithm and its performance using the sea-going data.

  • Recently, a target detection based on a distributed sensor network has been much studied in active sonar. Zhou et al. proposed a target localization method using line fitting based on a distributed sensor network which consists of low complexity sensors that only report binary detection results. This method has three advantages relative to ML estimator. First, there is no need to estimate propagation model parameters. Second, the computation is simple. Third, it only use sensors with "detection", which implies less data to be collected by data processing center. However, this method has larger target localization error than the ML estimator. In this paper, a target localization method which modifies Zhou's method is proposed for reducing the localization error. The modified method shows the performance improvement that the target localization error is reduced by 40.7% to Zhou's method in the point of RMSE.
