소결윅의 구조적 특성에 따른 히트파이프의 열수송 한계 분석 (Analysis of Heat Transport Limitations of the Heat Pipe for Structural Characteristics of Sintered Metal Wick)

  • 본 연구에서는 소형 동-소결윅 히트파이프를 대상으로 소결윅의 구조적 인자들이 히트파이프의 열수송 한계에 미치는 영향을 이론적으로 분석하였다. 소결윅의 입자 크기의 균일성과 소결 조건이 전체적인 기공분포와 기공률을 포함한 물리적 특성에 지배적인 요소로 작용했으며, 윅 두께 및 기공의 작은 편차가 히트파이프의 열수송 한계에 대체로 큰 영향을 미치는 것으로 나타났다. 특히, 증기온도와 경사각에 따라서 윅 두께와 평균 입자 반경, 그리고 모세관반경의 미세한 변화가 히트파이프의 모세관한계를 현저하게 변화시켰다.

  • 스크린 메쉬윅 및 소결윅 히트파이프의 열수송 한계를 예측하기 위한 이론적 해석을 수행하였다. 히트파이프의 직경은 8mm이고 작동유체는 물을 사용하였다 250메쉬 조건에서, 각각의 유효 모세관 반경(r$_{c}$ ), 기공률($\varepsilon$), 투과율(K)을 토대로 작동온도와 윅 두께 그러고 경사각에 따른 모세관압력과 열 수송 한계, 열 저항을 분석하였다. 작동온도가 높고 윅 두께가 증가할수록 모세관한계가 높아졌으며, 대체로 소결윅이 스크린적보다 높은 열수송 한계를 나타냈다. 스크린윅의 열저항이 소결윅보다 높았으며, 두 가지 모두 윅 두께가 증가함에 따라 열저항이 선형적으로 상승하였다.

  • 구리분말 소결윅 히트파이프의 열수송 한계를 예측하는 이론적 해석을 수행하였다. 히트파이프의 직경은 8 mm이고 물을 작동유체로 사용하였다. 입자의 직경을 대표적인 5 가지로 분류하여 각각의 유효 모세관 반경($r_c$) 기공률($\varepsilon$), 투파율(K)을 토대로 작동온도와 윅 두에 그리고 경사각에 따른 모세관압력과 열수송 한계, 열저항을 분석하였다. 소결윅의 모세관한계는 입자 직경이 크고 윅 두께가 증가하며 작동온도가 높을수록 증가했다 기공률과 모세관 반경이 증가할수록 열수송 한계가 높아졌으며, 윅 두께가 증가함에 따라 열저항이 크게 상승하였다.

  • Experimental studies of the cylindrical sintered-copper wick heat pipes were carried out to investigate the capillary heat transfer characteristics. Six models of the sintered-copper wick heat pipes were manufactured and tested to evaluate the heat transport limitations and the thermal characteristics. Also the performance of the heat pipes was analyzed theoretically and compared with the test results. The heat pipe models are divided into two sintered-wick groups and the nominal particle sizes are $180{\mu}m$(wick #1) and $200{\mu}m$(wick #2) respectively The experimental results showed that, the porosity of wick #1 was higher than that of wick #2, and also the wick #1 was generally superior than the wick #2 for the heat transport capability. The maximum heat transport rates were increased as the wick thicknesses and the vapor temperatures were increased.

  • There are various wick types for heat pipe. In the present study, the manufacturing technology of a sintered wick among various wick types is discussed. The sintering technology using metal has been applied broadly in the field of electronic-telecommunication as well as heat pipes. A study of manufacturing procedure and characteristic of sintered wick for heat pipe have been performed. Copper powder was used as wick material and stainless steel as a mandrel. A manufacturing technology of the mandrel for arranging vapor core in heat pipe, a sintering technology by first or second times and operating temperature for sintering, the measurements of a porosity, pore size, and pore distribution of sintered wick were considered. In the meantime, a heat pipe with sintered wick has been manufactured and a performance test of the heat pipe has been performed in order to review cooling performance. The performance test results for the 4mm diameter heat pipe with the sintered wick shows the stability since the temperature difference between a evaporator and a condenser of the heat pipe is less than $4.4^{\circ}C$, and thermal resistance is less than $0.7^{\circ}C/W$.

폼 타입 윅의 투과도를 예측하기 위한 해석 모델 (Analytic Model for Predicting the Permeability of Foam-type Wick)

  • 히트파이프에서 윅은 히트파이프의 열성능을 결정하는 데 중요한 역할을 한다. 여러 가지 형태의 윅 중 폼 타입 윅은 기공률과 유동 투과도가 높아서 윅의 모세관 펌핑 능력을 크게 향상시킬 수 있는 잠재능력을 갖고 있다고 평가된다. 본 논문에서는 폼 타입 윅의 투과도를 예측할 수 있는 모델을 광범위한 수치해석을 통해서 개발하였다. 제안된 관계식은 기존의 Kozeny-Carman 방정식을 확장한 형태를 갖고 있으며, Kozeny-Carman 계수들이 폼 타입 윅에 대해 기공률의 함수로 제시되었다. 제안된 관계식은 넓은 범위의 형상 변수에 대해서 기존의 실험 결과를 정확히 예측하는 것으로 드러났다. 폼 타입윅은 높은 기공률 때문에 기존 소결금속 윅의 모세관 성능을 획기적으로 향상시킬 수 있다.

  • In this study, to make an excellent heat pipe, the manufacturing technology of a sintered wick was investigated. Making a sintered wick is known to be very difficult but it has many advantages. For example, the porosity and pore size can be controlled and the capillary force is great. The mixture of copper and pore former powder was used as a wick material and ceramic-coated stainless steel was used as a mandrel which is necessary for vapor flow. To analyze the feature of the manufactured wick, not only porosity and pore size were measured but also the sintered structure was observed. A heat pipe with sintered wick was manufactured and the performance test of the heat pipe was performed in order to review cooling performance. The performance test results for the 4mm diameter heat pipe with the sintered wick shows the stability since the temperature difference between a evaporator and a condenser of the heat pipe is less than 4.4$^{\circ}C$, and thermal resistance is less than 0.7$^{\circ}C$/W, In the meantime the composite wick that is composed with sintered and woven wire was also examined. The heat transfer limit of the heat pipe with composite wick was enhanced about 51%~60% compare to the one with sintered wick.

  • Operating characteristics of a loop heat pipe (LHP) having a bypass line was investigated experimentally. The LHP had a sintered metal wick as a capillary structure and methanol as a working fluid. The sintered metal wick was made of stainless steel of which the average pore size was 5 ${\mu}m$and porosity of 47%. A bypass line of a small diameter was attached between the vapor escape passage and the liquid reservoir. The dimension of the flat evaporator was $50(L){\times}40(W){\times}30(H)$ mm and that of the condenser was $50(L){\times}40(W){\times}11(H)$ mm. Wall and pipe material of the LHP was stainless steel and heating area was 35(W) mm${\times}$35(L) mm. The inner diameters of vapor and liquid transport lines were 4.0 mm and 2.0 mm, and the lengths of the two lines were both 0.5 m. The LHP was tested for three different tilt angles of horizontal, favorite tilt, and adverse tilt. The thermal load range was up to 290 W at the condenser above evaporation position. Furthermore, the effect of a bypass line on the start-up transient as well as steady-state operation was presented and discussed.

  • LHP is different from a conventional heat pipes in design and heat and fluid flow passages. The situations of the former is much complex than the latter. In LHPs, evaporation occurs at the contact interface between the heating plate and the porous wick, so some micro channels machined at the contact interface serve to let the vapor flow out of the evaporator. This complexity of contact geometry was known to cause a high resistance to heat flow. The present work was to study the problem of heat passage across the contact surface for LHPs and determine those values contact resistance. For two cases of contact structures, the thermal contact resistances were examined experimentally, one being obtained through mechanical contact under pressure and the other through sintered bonding. Nickel powder wick and copper plate were used for specimens. The result showed that a substantial reduction of contact resistance of an order of degree could be obtainable by sintered bonding.
