Melting is one of the most effective treatments for stabilizing heavy metals and also creates high value by-products. In this study, authors evaluated the leaching characteristics of heavy metals in melting slag obtained by incinerator ashes. In order to evaluate the environmental compatibility of the recycled melting slag, the samples were analysed various leaching tests of heavy metals with raw incinerator ashes, melting slag and the construction materials recycled from melting slag. As the results : (1) The leaching concentrations of the melting slag were lower than those of the raw incinerator ashes in the experiment performed in accordance with Korea Standard Leaching Test (KSLT). (2) The heavy metal concentration of long term leaching test, which was conducted in various pH conditions, were under the standard level of regulation in KSLT. (3) The leaching concentration of mortar samples used for evaluating the feasibility of recycling the melting slag as construction materials also shows the suitable range for recycling. (4) The result of leaching test with the method of RG Min-StB 93, FGSV (Forschungsgesellschaft fur Stra$\beta$en- und Verkehrswesen) met the requirements in German.
The objective of the study is to find a way to utilize MSWI slag as filter material and to verify it. To do so, stability as filter material was tested, and used Ju-Munjin filter sand as control group to run actual filtering experiment to analyze filtering efficiency. According to result, MSWI slag is usable within designated waste acceptable standards. Also, it showed similar level of filtering capability to filter sand. Thus, MSWI slag could help to save and recycle resources if used as filtering material instead of filter sand As result of filtering test, SS and COD showed about same level of filtering capability similar to standard filter sand. MSWI slag has shown 26.96% higher with T-N, and 6.55% higher with T-P compared to standard filter sand. Also, remove efficiency comparison result with No. 40#(0.43mm) and mixed diameter showed equal or greater filtering capability.

In order to investigate the feasibility of municipal solid waste incineration ash melted slag powder as admixture, an experimental study was performed on cement mortar with municipal solid waste incineration ash melted slag powder. Fresh mortar properties and strength properties with various municipal solid waste incineration ash melted slag powder replacement ratios were estimated. There replacement ratio adopted in this study was 0, 10, 20, 30, 40, 50%. After then flow properties was considered as properties of fresh mortar. And compressive strength was determined 3, 7, 14, 28, 56 days for the hardened mortar specimens. According to the test results, the flow of mortar was increased with in replacement amount of municipal solid waste incineration ash melted slag powder. Furthermore, compressive strength at early age was decreased, whereas the compressive strength at the age of 28, 56day was increased.

With the advance of industrialization and urbanization, a lot of waste has been discharged and treated by incineration. But fly and bottom ashes are generated in this process. In addition, the treatment method to recycle sewage sludge and melting slag is required to manage these wastes. The objective of this research was to prepare of multi-functional brick which were made from MSWI (Municipal solid wastes incinerator) fly ash, sewage sludge and slag. The bricks were made by mixing raw materials and then drying for 24 hours. Next, they were dried for 24 hours at $160^{\circ}C$ and fired for 2 hours. Calcination temperature was changed to discuss the effect of temperature from $1,080^{\circ}C$ to $1,130^{\circ}C$. Compressive strength of a brick was creased with the increase of temperature. To increase mixing ratio of fly ash and slag reduce the compressive strength the optimal condition was the mixing ratio of fly ash : melting slag : sewage sludge : clay as 10 : 20 : 5 : 65 and $1,150^{\circ}C$ of calcination temperature. Compressive strength was obtained as about 41 MPa at this condition.
It was investigated that effects of NaOH concentration on synthesis of mesoporous materials using municipal solid waste incinerator ash slag (MSWI-ash slag). In order to increase the purity and maximize the amount of extracted Si content the raw MSWI-ash slag was mechanically activated. Extraction of Si from the MSWI-ash slag was carried out by alkali treatment using concentrated NaOH solution, which varied from 1M to 4M. Physical properties (i.e., pore size, specific surface area and total pore volume) of the synthesized mesoporous silica were also evaluated as a function of NaOH concentration via BET, SEM, TEM and small-angle X-ray scattering analyses. Over the entire range of NaOH concentration investigated (i.e., 1-4M), the synthesized mesoporous materials were determined to be SBA-15, which exhibited a hexagonal structure with the pore size of approximately 7 nm. On the other hand, specific surface area and total pore volume increased with NaOH concentration up to 3M while the values decreased at 4M, indicating that the optimal NaOH concentration for the synthesized mesoporous silica was approximately 3M. Further comparison analysis between two conditions (3M versus 4M) showed that the decrease in two physical properties at 4M NaOH concentration was likely due to the potential inhibition by excess Na ions on the formation of mesophase and the consequent increase of pore wall thickness by remaining Si ions.
The intension of this study is to produce ordinary portland cement using ash, both bottom ash and fly ash, obtained from municipal solid waste incineration ash (MSWI). We used limestone, waste molding sand, shale, slag from converting furnaces and fly ash as main raw materials and mixed them, setting the lime saturation factor (LSF) within 91.0, the silica modulus (SM) within 2.40, and iron modulus (IM) within 1.80. We conducted tests adding bottom ash alone 1, 2 and 3% by weight, respectively, and a mixture of bottom ash 0.9% and fly ash 0.1 % by weight. The result of analysis on clinker shows that the more ash is added, the lower the burnability index (B.I.) falls, lowering the mineral evolution of calcium silicate accordingly. From the measurement of compressive strength we have learned that the more ash is used, the lower the strength becomes.

Recently photochemical smog has become a serious urban air pollution. And VOC is the major pollutant for it. With the advance of industrialization and urbanization, MSWI fly ash and sewage sludge and melting slag were generated. It is necessary to de-toxificate ashes, because they contain many toxic constituents and probably lead to contaminate the environment. The objective of this research was to prepare multi-functional brick which is able to remove VOCs in ambient air. The bricks were made of MSWI fly ash, sewage sludge and slag. The benzene adsorption experiment by brick was acted to evaluate its adsorptivity. And also photocatalyst material was coated to enhance its adsorptivity and the endurance on the brick. According to the result, the benzene showed 74~96%. The removal efficiency was increased and the breakpoint time was lengthened by coating a brick.
In order to better understand carbon dioxide recycling, the carbon dioxide capture characteristics of six different alkaline industrial by-products, including incineration ash, desulfurized gypsum, low-grade quicklime, and steelmaking slag were investigated using a laboratory-scale direct aqueous carbonation reactor. In addition to the dissolution characteristics of each sample, the main reaction structure was confirmed through thermogravimetric analysis before and after the reaction, and the reactive CaO content was also defined through thermogravimetric analysis. The carbon dioxide capture capacity and efficiency of quicklime were determined to be 473 g/kg and 86.9%, respectively, and desulfurized gypsum and incineration ash were also evaluated to be relatively high at 51.1 to 131.7 g/kg and 51.2 to 87.7%, respectively. On the other hand, the capture efficiency of steelmaking slag was found to be less than 10% due to the influence of the production and post-cooling conditions. Therefore, in order to apply the carbonation process to steelmaking slag, it is necessary to optimize the slag production conditions. Through this study, it was confirmed that the carbon dioxide capture characteristics of incineration ash, quicklime, and desulfurized gypsum are at levels suitable for carbonation processes. Furthermore, this study was able to secure basic data for resource development technology that utilize carbon dioxide conversion to produce calcium carbonate for construction materials.
