  • De novo drug design is the process of developing new drugs that can interact with biological targets such as protein receptors. Traditional process of de novo drug design consists of drug candidate discovery and drug development, but it requires a long time of more than 10 years to develop a new drug. Deep learning-based methods are being studied to shorten this period and efficiently find chemical compounds for new drug candidates. Many existing deep learning-based drug design models utilize recurrent neural networks to generate a chemical entity represented by SMILES strings, but due to the disadvantages of the recurrent networks, such as slow training speed and poor understanding of complex molecular formula rules, there is room for improvement. To overcome these shortcomings, we propose a deep learning model for SMILES string generation using variational autoencoders with self-attention mechanism. Our proposed model decreased the training time by 1/26 compared to the latest drug design model, as well as generated valid SMILES more effectively.

  • In this study, we propose a new light-weight model RoutingConvNet with fewer parameters to improve the applicability and practicality of speech emotion recognition. To reduce the number of learnable parameters, the proposed model connects bidirectional MFCCs on a channel-by-channel basis to learn long-term emotion dependence and extract contextual features. A light-weight deep CNN is constructed for low-level feature extraction, and self-attention is used to obtain information about channel and spatial signals in speech signals. In addition, we apply dynamic routing to improve the accuracy and construct a model that is robust to feature variations. The proposed model shows parameter reduction and accuracy improvement in the overall experiments of speech emotion datasets (EMO-DB, RAVDESS, and IEMOCAP), achieving 87.86%, 83.44%, and 66.06% accuracy respectively with about 156,000 parameters. In this study, we proposed a metric to calculate the trade-off between the number of parameters and accuracy for performance evaluation against light-weight.

  • In this paper, we present the Korean menu-ordering Sentence Text-to-Speech (TTS) system using conformer-based FastSpeech2. Conformer is the convolution-augmented transformer, which was originally proposed in Speech Recognition. Combining two different structures, the Conformer extracts better local and global features. It comprises two half Feed Forward module at the front and the end, sandwiching the Multi-Head Self-Attention module and Convolution module. We introduce the Conformer in Korean TTS, as we know it works well in Korean Speech Recognition. For comparison between transformer-based TTS model and Conformer-based one, we train FastSpeech2 and Conformer-based FastSpeech2. We collected a phoneme-balanced data set and used this for training our models. This corpus comprises not only general conversation, but also menu-ordering conversation consisting mainly of loanwords. This data set is the solution to the current Korean TTS model's degradation in loanwords. As a result of generating a synthesized sound using ParallelWave Gan, the Conformer-based FastSpeech2 achieved superior performance of MOS 4.04. We confirm that the model performance improved when the same structure was changed from transformer to Conformer in the Korean TTS.

  • Rainfall-runoff prediction studies using deep learning while considering catchment attributes have been gaining attention. In this study, we selected two models: the Transformer model, which is suitable for large-scale data training through the self-attention mechanism, and the LSTM-based multi-state-vector sequence-to-sequence (LSTM-MSV-S2S) model with an encoder-decoder structure. These models were constructed to incorporate catchment attributes and predict the inflow of 10 multi-purpose dam watersheds in South Korea. The experimental design consisted of three training methods: Single-basin Training (ST), Pretraining (PT), and Pretraining-Finetuning (PT-FT). The input data for the models included 10 selected watershed attributes along with meteorological data. The inflow prediction performance was compared based on the training methods. The results showed that the Transformer model outperformed the LSTM-MSV-S2S model when using the PT and PT-FT methods, with the PT-FT method yielding the highest performance. The LSTM-MSV-S2S model showed better performance than the Transformer when using the ST method; however, it showed lower performance when using the PT and PT-FT methods. Additionally, the embedding layer activation vectors and raw catchment attributes were used to cluster watersheds and analyze whether the models learned the similarities between them. The Transformer model demonstrated improved performance among watersheds with similar activation vectors, proving that utilizing information from other pre-trained watersheds enhances the prediction performance. This study compared the suitable models and training methods for each multi-purpose dam and highlighted the necessity of constructing deep learning models using PT and PT-FT methods for domestic watersheds. Furthermore, the results confirmed that the Transformer model outperforms the LSTM-MSV-S2S model when applying PT and PT-FT methods.
