In general, wireless MAC uses the ACK for reliability. Meanwhile, in wireless sensor network, data is delivered periodically and redundantly. In these situations, every ACK transmission causes the reliability flexible applications to waste some energy. IEEE 802.15.4 developed for energy efficiency has the option of using ACK or not, but there are no researches exploiting this peculiarity. In this paper, we proposed the selective unacknowledged transmission satisfying some requirements (e.g., end-to-end delivery) by removing the ACK when frames are delivered well and using the ACK when frames are delivered poorly. Also, we performed several evaluations exploiting the NS2 simulator.

Wireless sensor networks (WSN) based on low-power technologies become important portion of ubiquitous systems. In this paper, we introduce a WSN-based welfare management system as one of the WSN applications. Especially, we implement S-MAC (Sensor Medium Access control) protocol on our system that saves both cost and power consumption, and we evaluate system performances using the TOSSIM simulator. Sensors and a small database server are placed in the house of participant, which collects and stores some environment conditions of the house. The small servers are connected to each others by wireless ad-hoc network.

In this paper, we deal with suggestion of energy efficient MAC protocol. The scheme(I-MAC) makes the active duty-cycle duration based on by utilizing data frequency. Data frequency is made by checking a check bit of Link layer. By being studies on NS-2 simulation environments, the proposed scheme was proved to be improved in terms of energy efficiency of 50 % and to be similar to throughput of S-MAC on every time interval.

LEACH (Low Energy Adaptive Clustering Hierarchy) has been proposed as a routing protocol with a hierarchical structure, in order to achieve the energy efficiency that is of primary importance in the wireless sensor networks. A wireless sensor network adopting LEACH is composed of a few clusters, each of which consists of member nodes that sense the data, and head nodes that deliver the collected data from member nodes to a sink node that is connected to a backbone network. A head node in a cluster allocates TDMA slots to its member nodes without taking into account whether they have data to transmit or not, thus resulting in inefficiency of energy usage of head node that remains in active mode during the entire round time. This motivates us to propose a scheme to improve the energy efficiency of LEACH, by assigning TDMA slots only to those member nodes who have data to send. As a result, the head node can remain sleep during the period of no data transmission from member nodes, leading to the substantial energy saving. By using the ns-2 simulator, we evaluate the performance of the proposed scheme in comparison with the original LEACH. Experimental results validate our scheme, showing a better performance than original LEACH in terms of the number of outliving nodes and the quantity of energy consumption as time evolves.

The properties of sensor node having a restricted energy in WSN have a difficult in various application fields to apply. Our paper proposed the cluster head selection which is an effective energy in order to manage in wireless sensor network. The proposed algorithm improves an energy efficient and is applied to various network environment considering energy capacity between cluster head and nodes and distance between cluster head and base station(sink node). By using the ns-2 simulator, we evaluate the performance of the proposed scheme in comparison with the original LEACH-C. Experimental results validate our scheme, showing a better performance than original LEACH-C in terms of the number of outliving nodes and the quantity of energy consumption as time evolves.

Wireless sensors, installed on machinery, and Time Division Multiple Access (TDMA) transmission make an ideal system for monitoring machine conditions in industrial plants because there is no need for electronic wiring. However, there has not yet been a successful field application of such a system, capable of continuously transmitting data at sample rates greater than 100 Hz. In this research, a TDMA network protocol capable of acquiring data from multiple sensors at sample rates greater than 100 Hz was developed for field application. The protocol was implemented in a single cluster-star topology network, and the system was evaluated based on the node number and transmission distance. Network simulator 2 (ns-2) was used for a real field simulation. Non-TDMA and TDMA protocol cases were compared using four sensor nodes. In the cases of 20-s and 40-s transmission times, there was little difference between the reception rates of the non-TDMA and TDMA systems. However, the difference was much greater when using a 60-s transmission time.

To protect wireless sensor networks (WSNs), various key distribution and management schemes have been proposed. However, most of them conducted simulations and experiments for performance evaluation by considering only the two-dimensional (2D) environments. In this paper, we investigate the effect of real-world three-dimensional (3D) topographic features on the key pre-distribution schemes for WSNs. For this purpose, we analyze and compare the performance of three pairwise key pre-distribution schemes in 2D and 3D environments: full pairwise (FP), random pairwise (RP), and full and random pairwise (FRP) schemes. For the experiments, we employ a network simulator NS-3 and 3D graphic tools such as Blender and Unity. As a result, we confirm that there was a difference in the performance of each scheme according to the actual 3D terrain and that the location-based FRP that considers deployment errors, has the highest efficiency in many aspects.
6LoWPAN (IPv6 Low-power Wireless Personal Area Network) is IPv6 packets transmission technology at Sensor network over the IEEE 802.15.4 Standard MAC and Physical layer. Adaptation layer between IP layer and MAC layer performs fragmentation and reassembly of packet for transmit IPv6 packets. RFC4944, IETF 6LoWPAN WG standard document define packet fragmentation and reassembly. In this paper, we propose the 6PASim (6LoWPAN Packet Simulator) to perform IPv6 packet fragmentation and reassembly for performance evaluation. The 6PASim consist of two parts. One is Packet_Transmit_module that makes IEEE 802.15.4 frames the IPv6 packet from upper layer, and transmit its. and the another is Packet_Receive_module that reassembles transferred frames and completes original IPv6 packets. we can evaluate frame transmit rate and amount of control message through 6PASim. The result of simulation shows the SRM (Selective Retransmission Method) scheme provider better performance than IRM (Immediate Retransmission Method) scheme.
OMNeT++ (Objective Modular Network Testbed in C++) is an extensible and modular C++ simulation library and framework for building network simulators. OMNeT++ provides simulation models independently developed for various fields, including sensor networks, and Internet protocols. This enables researchers to use the tools and features required for their desired simulations. OMNeT++ uses NED (Network Description) Language to define nodes and network topologies, and it is able to implement the creation and behavior of defined network objects in C++. Moreover, the INET framework is an open-source model library for the OMNeT++ simulation environment, containing models for various networking protocols and components, making it convenient for designing and validating new network protocols. This paper aims to explain the concepts of OMNeT++ and the procedures for network simulation using the INET framework to assist novice researchers in modeling and analyzing various network scenarios.
As sensor networks are used in various and dynamic applications, the function of sink-to-sensors reliable multicasting such as for task reprogramming is newly required. NAK-based error recovery schemes have been proposed for energy efficient reliable multicasting. However, these schemes have incompleteness problems such as the last packet loss. This paper introduces an ACK-based error recovery scheme, RM2I(Reliable Multicast with Implicit ACK and Indirect Recovery). It utilizes wireless multicast advantage in which a packet may be delivered to all of its omni-directional neighbor nodes. When a sender overhears a packet which its receiver forwards to the next nodes, it may interpret it as an ACK from the receiver. We call it an Implicit ACK. In Indirect Recovery, when a node receives a packet from neighbor nodes which are not its direct upstream node, it saves and utilizes it for error recovery. Using NS-2 simulator, we have analyzed their effects. We have also compared RM2I with the NAK-based error recovery scheme. In results, RM2I shows comparable performances to the ideal NAK-based scheme, except where Implicit ACK and Indirect Recovery do not occur at the edges of the networks.
