  • The development of Korean urban geography can be divided into several stages including initial stage, transition stage, and maturation stage. If this trend persists, it can be expected that it would turn into the matured stage. This paper intended to recall the research trends from 1960 to 2012, focusing on 686 papers and 177 books published during the last 62 years, and investigated by research areas, study regions, methodologies, and journals in relation to urban geography. Although increasing number of urban geographers has made mutual relationship more complex and diverse, no signs of school formation have yet been seen in Korean urban geography. Large portions of papers have concerned about Seoul Metropolitan Region for their study regions. There have been diversified trends of oversea studies away from the US cities to other cities in various countries. Also, quantitative studies have been increasing their weight since the 2000s. Moreover, articles on the Journal of the Korean Urban Geographical Society have been far surpassed in its number.

  • In celebrating a half century history of the Korean Geographical Society, this paper is concerned about research trends of the urban geography in Korea by reviewing of 449 papers and 15 books mainly in an urban geography field. The findings are summarized as follows: (1) The development of the urban geography in Korea has several stages; \circled1 The launching stage just after 1945; \circled2 the premature stage in the 1960s; \circled3 the taking-off stage in the 1970s; \circled4 the maturing stage in the 1980s; and \circled5 culminating stage in the as of 1990s. (2) The earlier studies had a few limited research themes without major debating issues. In the 1970s, various research themes had been introduced in the urban geography. More diverse themes have been studied in urban geography after the 1980s. The major themes in the urban geography included urbanization, urban structure, urban system, urban economic structure and so on. (3) The most frequent research area for the Korean urban geographers has been the Seoul metropolitan area followed by Kyongsang-Province region. Outside Korea, the most frequent research areas are the American cities followed by the cities of Japan, Canada, and France. (4) The urban geography in Korea has played a major role in introducing the quantitative methods and techniques into geography. For example over 30.5% out of papers in urban geography has taken the quantitative techniques in the past 35 years during the 1960-1994 period. The papers inside urban geography have counted more than 60 percent from research papers in major university journals and took 34.6 percent from the papers of the Journal of Korean Geographical Society.

  • The underground utility tunnel is an urban infrastructure that accommodates and manages important facilities such as water and sewage, electricity, and communication in the city, and is a national facility that needs to be protected from disasters such as fire, earthquake, and flooding. In establishing a disaster safety life cycle management system such as prediction, prevention, preparedness, response, and recovery, a disaster safety management platform for underground utility tunnel is being developed by utilizing digital twin technology in which advanced ICT technology and data are converged. In this paper, the maturity model for the disaster safety digital twin was reviewed, and the datasets necessary for implementing the digital twin at each stage were defined.

  • While the growth of Taegu has occurred through the land readjustment project, the public sector development project and the construction of roads, its growth pattern has been shaped by physical constraints such as mountains, streams and rail roads. The processes of urban growth of Taegu are classified into four stages: the stage of urban embryo in the Chosun Era; the formation stage of the basic urban system after the Japanese Colonial Era up to 1960; the stage of urban growth in the industrialization period from 1960s to 1980; and lastly, the stage of urban expansion and maturation, with construction of extensive newly developed districts, after the 1980s. Since its promotion to a metropolitan city with the inclusion of Seongseo, Wolbae, Gosan, Ansim and Chilgok in 1981, those regions have grown into newly developed residential districts, with its accompanying high density and high rise apartments complexes, through the public sector development project. These newly developed districts are located about six to seven kilometers away from CBD of the city along with main radial roads. The sites are also located on the route of the fourth belt way of the city. While the Sangin, Seongseo and Jisan Beommul newly developed districts have developed contiguously with the existing built-up areas, the Siji and Chilgok districts have developed separately by the green belt and the Geumho River, respectively.

  • This study investigates the operational facets of low-density urban air mobility (UAM) from an airline's perspective amid burgeoning concerns about urban congestion in megacities. UAM, employing electric vertical takeoff and landing (eVTOL) technology, emerges as a potential remedy to the challenges of traffic gridlock and environmental degradation. As the UAM market progresses from initial stages to maturity, tailored traffic control systems become paramount. Focused on the context of low-density environments during UAM's inception, this research scrutinizes operational frameworks, essential infrastructure, and likely scenarios. It aims to bolster the safety and efficiency of UAM operations by delving into the specifics of traffic control concepts designed for these unique settings. The study seeks to significantly contribute to optimizing UAM's initial phases, providing insights into crucial operational dynamics for a smoother integration of urban air mobility into contemporary urban landscapes.

  • This paper explores whether it is better to forecast city gas demand in Korea using national level data directly or, alternatively, construct forecasts from regional demand models and then aggregate these regional forecasts. In the regional model, we consider gas demand for Seoul metropolitan and the other local areas. Our forecast evaluation exercise for 2013-2016 shows the regional forecast model generally outperforms the national forecasting model. This result comes from the fact that the dynamic properties of each region's gas demands can be better taken into account in the regional demand model. More specifically, the share of residential gas demand in the Seoul metropolitan area is above 50%, and subsequently this demand is heavily influenced by temperature fluctuations. Conversely, the dominant portion of regional gas demand is due to industrial gas consumption. Moreover, electricity is regarded as a substitute for city gas in the residential sector, and industrial gas competes with certain oil products. Our empirical results show that a regional demand forecast model can be an effective alternative to the demand model based on nation-wide gas consumption and that regional information about gas demand is also useful for analyzing sectoral gas consumption.

  • The assessment (or the evaluation) of spatial disparity is the main concern for the study of spatial disparities or spatial inequalities. In order to evaluate the spatial disparity, the regional differences have to be counted quantitatively. Several measurements have been introduced for evaluating the development potentials of each region. Most of them are the composite indices of the socio-economic variables rather than the real potentials of the region. This study attempts to investigate the spatial disparity in Korea. For the purpose, the levels of opportunity potentials of the cities have been calculated by the Potential Model redefined by Lee(1995). The opportunity potentials have been calculated for the educational, cultural, medical service, environmental sectors, income, and consumption sectors, and the spatial patterns of various opportunity potentials have been analyzed. The spatial patterns of opportunity potentials show the severe concentration on the Metropolitan Seoul area through all sectors. The next level concentration appears at the other end of the Keuyng-Bu axis. And the cities relatively high opportunity potential values are distributed along the Keuyng-Bu axis. Remain parts of the country show quietly low opportunity potential values. In particular, the southern-west and the northern-east parts show relatively very low values. This pattern appears for all sectors except for the opportunity potential of the environmental sector. It means that the spatial disparity in Korea have been promoted and enhanced by the national development policies concentrated the investment on the large cities along the Keuyng-Bu axis during the last 40 years.

The Diversification of Environmental Aesthetics and the Rise of Everyday Aesthetics - Theoretical Agendas and Issues of Yuriko Saito's Everyday Aesthetics - (환경미학의 다변화와 일상미학의 부상 - 유리코 사이토의 일상미학 이론의 의제와 쟁점을 중심으로 -)

  • This paper explores the recent development of environmental aesthetics and critically examines the main agendas, claims, issues, and implications of everyday aesthetics, which is emerging as an important branch of environmental aesthetics. Environmental aesthetics began in the context of cultural change and environmentalism in the 1960s and expanded in the second half of the 20th century with a solid theoretical foundation. At the beginning of the 21st century, it entered a process of diversification of objects and subjects. Having reached academic maturity, environmental aesthetics has expanded into theoretical territory considering the urban environment and the human environment, providing practical coordinates as a discourse for planning and designing urban environments and landscapes. The most notable achievement of environmental aesthetics since the mid-2000s is the establishment of 'everyday aesthetics'. Yuriko Saito, who is leading the research on everyday aesthetics, expanded the objects and scope of aesthetic theory to everyday objects, events, activities, and environments. She excavates the microscopic and sensory aspects of everyday life, which have been overlooked by conventional art-centered aesthetics, through the lens of aesthetics. She reinterprets various layers of phenomena in contemporary urban landscapes and analyzes how the 'power of the aesthetic' hidden in everyday life profoundly affects the quality of life and the state of the world. Saito examines the appreciation of the distinctive characteristics and ambiance inherent in everyday objects and environments and proposes a 'moral-aesthetic judgment' to alert citizens to the environmental, social, and political consequences of everyday aesthetic appreciation and response. This paper identifies the issues and implications of everyday aesthetics as first, the expansion of aesthetics and the ambiguous everyday, second, the moral-aesthetic judgment and the aesthetics of care, and third, urban regeneration landscapes and aesthetic literacy. In particular, the moral virtues of everyday aesthetics that Saito proposes, such as care, thoughtfulness, sensitivity, and respect, provide a critical reference for the practice of contemporary urban regeneration landscapes. The 'aesthetic literacy' is a key concept demonstrating why an environmental aesthetics perspective is necessary to interpret everyday urban environments and landscapes.
