We synthesized microcapsule absorbent with crosslinked poly(styrene-$alt$-maleic anhydride) (PSMA) as a core and PSMA as a shell by a precipitation polymerization method for the delayed absorption of excess water in cement mortar. cPSMA-PSMAs with core-shell structure were synthesized with ratios of 1/1, 1/2 and 1/3 as core monomer mass to shell monomer mass to control shell thickness. We observed the hydrolysis of PSMA in cement-saturated aqueous solution by a FTIR spectrometer. We observed good core-shell structure microcapsules for 1/2(cPSMA #3), but observed incomplete core-shell structure for 1/1(cPSMA #2) and 1/3(cPSMA #4) of core/shell monomer ratios. The swelling ratio of cPSMA #3 in cement-saturated aqueous solution was increased until 20 min. After that it was decreased until 2 hrs swelling time, and they started to increase again. The viscosities of cement paste with cPSMA #3 microcapsules were very slowly increased until 1 hr and increased fast after 1.5 hrs. Cement mortar with 0.5 wt% cPSMA #1 having only core part showed about 5% increase in compressive strength compared to that of plain cement mortar. cPSMA #3 added cement mortar showed the highest compressive strength with 7% increase.
In this study, we developed an optical-fiber sensor using cobalt chloride solution to monitor temperature in real-time between long distance points unaffected by the electro-magnetic wave and the vibration. Cobalt chloride solutions were made using 10% water and 90% ethanol (v/v) solution. The transmittance of these solutions was analyzed on 655 nm using UV-Visible spectrometer regarding temperature change. Also 30.8 mM cobalt chloride solution was gelled by dissolving polyvinyl butyral and the transmittance of this was analyzed on 655 nm regarding temperature change. The results of transmittance and optical power measurement showed decrease of both transmittance and optical power with increase of temperature from 66.8% and 149.5 nW at $25^{\circ}C$ to 7.1% and 48 nW at $70^{\circ}C$, respectively. These results support the possibility of gelled cobalt chloride/polyvinyl butyral as an optical-fiber sensor to monitor temperature change.
In this study, we used 3-(trimethoxysilyl)propylmethacrylate(MPS) silane coupling agent for surface modification of silica nanoparticles. We studied effects of reaction conditions such as solvent pH, MPS hydrolysis time, reaction time, and molar ratio of MPS to Si-OH groups on silica nanoparticle surfaces, on the surface modification reactions of silica nanoparticles. Fourier Transform Infrared Spectroscopy(FTIR), Elemental Analysis(EA) and solid state crosspolarization magic angle spinning(CP/MAS) Nuclear Magnetic Resonance Spectroscopy(NMR) techniques were used to determine the type and the degree of surface modification. We found MPS reacts preferentially with Si-OH groups of the silica nanoparticles as monomeric form at solvent pH = 4.5. But increasing hydrolysis time of MPS from 30 mins to 90 mins, and molar ratio of MPS to Si-OH groups on silica nanoparticle surfaces, we found that MPS reacts preferentially with Si-OH groups of the silica nanoparticles as oligomeric form.
Recycled irrigation water is a primary inoculum source of Phytophthora spp. and is capable of spreading propagules throughout nursery cultivation. Ozonation is commonly used to disinfest the recycled irrigation water; however, ozone has not been fully researched as a disinfectant for this purpose. In this study, zoospores of four species of Phytophthora were exposed for $1{\sim}9$ min to free available ozone at $0.1{\sim}0.3,\;0.5{\sim}0.7,\;0.9{\sim}1.2,\;1.4{\sim}1.7\;and\;1.9{\sim}2.2mg/l$. Zoospores, mycelial fragments, and culture plugs of P. nicotianae also were exposed to ozone concentrations ranging from 0.1 to 2.2 mg/l for periods ranging from 1 to 9 min. In addition, ozonated water was assayed monthly in 2004 and 2005 at two commercial nurseries, and quarterly in the first year at two other nurseries in Suwon, for ozone and survival of pythiaceous species using a selective medium. No zoospores of any species tested survived endpoint free ozone at 1.4 mg/l while limited mycelial fragments of P. nicotianae survived at 1.9 mg/l, and mycelial plugs treated at the same level of ozone were able to produce few sporangia. Phytophthora spp. were recovered only from nursery irrigation water with levels of free ozone at 0.3 mg/l or lower. The results of this study are essential for improving current ozonation sterilization.
A wilt disease on the greenhouse-grown chrysanthemum occurred at Kumi, Masan and Busan, Korea in $2003{\sim}2005$. Symptoms of wilting, yellowing, and marginal burning started from lower leaves and progressed upward. Early symptoms often appeared on one side, involving only one part of the plant or one side of individual leaves or stems without a vascular discoloration. Vascular tissues of the infected leaf-base's discolored to brown. Fungal isolates obtained from discolored tissues were identified as Verticillium dahliae based on its cultural and morphological characteristics. The fungus showed whitish to creamy colony pattern with abundant dark brown to black elongated microsclerotia on PDA. Conidiophores were verticillately branched and conidia were ellipsoidal to sub-cylindrical shape, and measured as $2.5{\sim}8.8{\times}2.0{\sim}3.8{\mu}m$. Pathogenicity tests by root dipping resulted in similar symptoms observed in the naturally infected chrysanthemum in fields.
Antifungal activity reaction to Aloe peel and juice extracted by several solvents and concentrations against three plant pathogenic fungi as collectrichum gloeosporioides, Fusarium oxysporum, and F. solani were investigated. The Antifungal activity of Aloe extracts varied with the kinds of solvents. In case of C. gloesporioides and F. solani, it's the highest in water, second in methanol, and third in ethanol. It showed that Antifungal activity of Aloe peel and juice extracts based on concentration was much more excellent in juice extracts than peel extracts against C. gloeosporioides, F. solani. Effect of Antifungal against F. oxysporum by juice extracts did not appear at a concentration of $100{\mu}l/L$ and then shows 9.5% of inhibition rate at $100,000{\mu}l/L$ while against C. gloeosporioides it starts to react at $100{\mu}l/L$ and then reaches at 29.3% of the highest inhibition rate at a concentration of $100,000{\mu}l/L$ out of three plant pathogenic fungi. The effect of control efficacy against Fusarium wilt caused by F. oxysporum by juice extracts of foliar spray tends to increase and the more the concentration of juice extracts increases, the higher the effect of control efficacy against Fusarium wilt disease. Foliar spray at a concentration of 10g/L has a 62% of control efficacy compared with control treatment, which foliar spray of Aloe juice extracts can be the more effective method in order to prevent Fusarium wilt disease caused by F. oxysporum.
This study was carried out to evaluate the efficiency of white shading agent for reduction of greenhouse air temperature and to develop cost-effective cooling strategies for strawberry seedling production during hot seasons. Experiment results showed that solar radiation ($W/m^2$) was reduced by 14~17% and 33~37% for 15% and 35% white wash shading treatments, respectively, in black shading net treatment solar radiation was reduced by 39~44% compared to non-shaded treatment. Measured greenhouse air temperatures in 15% and 35% white wash shading treatments were $38.4^{\circ}C$ and $36.5^{\circ}C$, respectively, whereas in black shading net covered greenhouses air temperature was $35.1^{\circ}C$, thereby 35% and 15% shading treatments showed 3.3 and $1.9^{\circ}C$ higher air temperatures than black net shading treatment. Crown diameter of strawberry plants in black net shading treatment was 7.5mm, and in 15% and 35% white wash shading treatments were 8.6mm and 8.3mm, respectively. Strawberry transplants grown in 35% white wash shading treatment produced the highest above ground fresh weight(7.8g), followed by 15% white wash shading(6.7g) and black net shading treatments(5.8g). Also, both 15% and 35% white wash shading treatments produced higher root fresh weight(4.1g and 4.3g) compare to black net shading treatments(2.7g).

For the development of reference values and evaluation of water quality in various environmental conditions, we divided the coastal region around Korean peninsular into 5 distinctive ecological regions based on the influence of surface current, depth, tidal range, turbidity, and climate condition. We used national marine environment monitoring data collected by National Fisheries Research & Development Institute(NFRDI) from 2000-2009. For the reference values, we used maximum seasonal mean from 2000 to 2007 for DIN, DIP, and chlorophyll-a and minimum seasonal mean for secchi depth measured at stations without the influence of river runoff in each ecological regions. For the reference value of bottom dissolved oxygen saturation, we used minimum mean value of 90% calculated from minimal riverine influence stations of whole regions. We calculated enrichment score for each assessment criteria. The enrichment score of DIN, DIP, and Chlorophyll-a was 1 (=< reference value), 2 (< 110% of reference value), 3 (< 125% of reference value), 4 (< 150% of reference value), and 5 (> 150% of reference value). The enrichment score of DO saturation and Secchi depth was 1 (> reference value), 2 (> 90% of reference value), 3 (>75 % of reference value), 4 (> 50% of reference value), and 5 (< 50% of reference value). We calculated water quality index using weighted linear combination of five enrichment score for the comparison of whole regions. From the water quality index distribution calculated from all stations between 2000 and 2007 period, we classified into 5 grade based on the standard deviation calculated from total water quality index. We assigned grade very good(I), good(II), moderate(III), bad(IV), and very bad(V) when the water quality index was less than 23, minimum + 1 sd, +2 sd, +3 sd, and grater than minium+ 3 sd, respectively.
