Volatile organic compounds (VOCs) are low calorific value gases (LCVG) emitted from chemical processes such as painting booth, dye works and drying processes etc. Characteristics of VOCs are low calorific values less than 150kcal/㎥, high activation energy for ignition and low energy output. These characteristics usually make combustion unstable and its treatment processes needs high-energy consumption. The cyclone combustion system is suitable for LCVG burning because it can recirculate energy through a high swirling flow to supply the activation energy for ignition, increases energy density In make a combustion temperature higher than usual swirl combustor and also increases mixing intensity. This research was conducted to develop optimized cyclone combustion system for thermal oxidation of VOCs. This research was executed to establish the effect of swirl number with respect to the combustion temperature and composition of exhausted gas in the specific combustor design.

A Promising new approach to achieve low pollutant emissions and improvement of flame stability is tested experimentally using a cyclone jet hybrid combustor employing both premixed and diffusion combustion mode. Three kinds of nozzle are tested for mixing enhancement of fuel and air. The LNG (Liquified Natural Gas) is used as a fuel. The combustor is operated by two methods. One is DC (Diffusion Combustion) mode generated swirl flow by air as general swirl combustor, and the other is HC (Hybrid Combustion) mode. The HC mode consists of diffusion jet flame of axial direction and premixed cyclone flame of tangential direction in order to stabilized the diffusion jet flame. The results showed that the flame stability of HC mode is significantly enhanced than that of DC mode through the change of mixing characteristics by modifications of fuel nozzle. In addition, the reductions of CO and NOx emission in HC mode, as compared with that for the DC mode, is large than about 50% in stable region. Also, even using the low calorific fuel as $CO_2$-blended gas, it is identified that the cyclone jet hybrid combustor has the high performance of flame stability.
Large eddy simulation(LES) methodology used to model isothermal non-swirling and swirling flows in a model gas turbine combustor. The LES solver was implemented on parallel computer consisting 16 processors. To verify the capability of LES code and characterize swirling flow, the results was compared with that of Reynolds Averaged Navier-Stokes(RANS) using k -$\epsilon$ model as well as experimental data. The results showed that the LES and RANS well predicted the mean velocity field of a non-swirling flow. Specially, the LES showed a very excellent prediction performance for the corner recirculation zone. In swirling flow, comparing with the results obtained by RANS, LES showed a better performance in predicting the mean axial and azimuthal velocities, and the central recirculation zone. Finally, unsteady phenomena of turbulent flow was examined with LES methodology.

Large Eddy Simulation(LES) has been conducted to insight interaction effects of turbulent flow and chemical reaction of a lean-Premixed swirl combustor. The unsteady turbulent flame is carefully simulated so that the motion of flow and flame can be characterized in detail. Fuel lumps escaping from the primary combustion zone move downstream and consequently produce local hot spots conveying large vortical structures in the azimuthal direction. The correlation between pressure oscillation and unsteady heat release is examined by the spatial and temporal Rayleigh parameter.

The basic experiments for designing the effective gas turbine combustor were performed. There are several factors that define the characteristics of gas turbine combustor. Among them, experiment was focused on swirl effects by three types of swirler with different swirl numbers(0.0, 0.38, and 0.62). Particularly, an interest was concentrated on primary zone where the flame characteristics of total combustor was dominated strongly and secondary zone where the remaining unburned gas was reacted again or cooling effect was done according to degree of swirl intensity. For this study, following measurements have been carried out, that is, time mean and fluctuating temperature, exhaust gas composition including NO concentration, and ion current. From this study, it was found that swirl intensity affects largely not only flame style but also emission formation, furthermore that it is important to select proper swirl intensity.

Flow characteristics in a liquid fuel ramjet combustor were investigated using the PIV method. The combustor has two rectangular inlets that form a $90^{\circ}$ angle each other. Three cases of test combustors are made in which those inlet angles are $30^{\circ},\;45^{\circ}\;and\;60^{\circ}$. The experiments were performed in a water tunnel test with the same Reynolds number as Mach 0.3 at the inlet. PIV software was developed to measure the characteristics of the flow field in the combustor. A large and complex recirculating flow was measured in the dome area with 4 different dome size. Experimental results shows that 1/3 dome size of combustor diameter is suitable and smaller inlet angle provide large recirculation flow at the dome of combustor as a frame holder in this experimental ranges but need to consider secondary recirculation flow in a junction region to optimize the configuration of ramjet combustor.

An experimental study has been conducted to investigate the effects of a multi air-staged burner on NOx formation and heat transfer in a 15kW large-scale laboratory furnace adopted the reburning process. The reburn fuel as well as burnout air was injected from each nozzle attached at the wall of the cylindrical furnace. Fuel in both main burner and reburn nozzle was LPG (Liquefied Petroleum Gas). The paper reports the influences on NOx reduction of reburn fuel fraction in reburning zone. Temperature distribution inside the overall region as well as total heat flux at the wall of the furnace has been measured to examine the heat transfer characteristics due to the reburning process. For comparison, the reburning effects were examined for a combustor with two types of burner; a regular single staged burner and a multi-air staged burner. A gas analysis was also performed to evaluate an appropriate condition for NOx emission in a primary zone for the excess air ratio of 1.1. As a result, combustion efficiency expected to become more efficient due to the reduction of heat loss in burnout zone decrease when multi air-staged burner in furnace adopted reburning technology was used.

This paper describes experimental results on combustion characteristics with hydrogen contents of synthetic natural gas (SNG) in low swirl combustor. To investigate the effect of hydrogen contents for premixed SNG flame, stability map, CH chemiluminescence images, flame spectrum analysis and emission performances were measured. In the results, as the hydrogen content was increased, the lean flammable limit was expanded and the flame length was decreased. The hydrogen contents affected the flame liftoff height, and it has different tendency according to the equivalence ratio and flame shape. The change of height and length of flame according to hydrogen contents is caused by the fast burning velocity of hydrogen, which can be confirmed by GRI 3.0 reaction mechanism in PREMIX code. The intensity of $OH^*$, $CH^*$ and $C_2^*$ was confirmed by spectrum analysis of flame. As a result, the $CH^*$ intensity was not significantly different according to hydrogen content. The increase of hydrogen contents influenced positively CO and NOx emission performances.

The present study has experimentally investigated the effects of $CO_2$ diluted oxygen on the structure of swirl-stabilized flame in a lab-scale combustor. The methane fuel and oxidant mixture gas ($CO_2$ and $O_2$) were mixed in a pre-mixer and introduced to the combustor through different degrees of swirl vanes. The flame characteristics were examined for various amount of carbon dioxide addition to the methane fuel and various swirl strengths. The effects of carbon dioxide addition and swirl intensity on the combustion characteristics of pre-mixed methane flames were examined using chemiluminescence techniques to provide information about flow field. The results show that the hot combustion zone increases at the upstream reaction zone because of an increase in the recirculation flow for an increase in swirl intensity. The hot combustion zone is also increased at the downstream zone by recirculation flow because of an increase in swirl intensity which results in higher centrifugal force. The OH and CH radical intensities of reaction zone decrease with carbon dioxide addition because the carbon dioxide plays a role of diluted gas in the reaction zone.
