  • Mutual information is useful for analyzing nonlinear dependence in time series in much the same way as correlation is used to characterize linear dependence. We use multivariate kernel density estimators for the estimation of mutual information at different time lags for single and multiple time series. This approach is tested on a variety of hydrologic data sets, and suggested an appropriate delay time $ au$ at which the mutual information is almost zerothen multi-dimensional phase portraits could be constructed from measurements of a single scalar time series.

  • In many real-world data, multiple response variables are often dependent on the same set of explanatory variables. In particular, if several response variables are correlated with each other, simultaneous estimation considering the correlation between response variables might be more effective way than individual analysis by each response variable. In this multivariate regression analysis, least distance estimator (LDE) can estimate the regression coefficients simultaneously to minimize the distance between each training data and the estimates in a multidimensional Euclidean space. It provides a robustness for the outliers as well. In this paper, we examine the least distance estimation method in multivariate linear regression analysis, and furthermore, we present the penalized least distance estimator (PLDE) for efficient variable selection. The LDE technique applied with the adaptive group LASSO penalty term (AGLDE) is proposed in this study which can reflect the correlation between response variables in the model and can efficiently select variables according to the importance of explanatory variables. The validity of the proposed method was confirmed through simulations and real data analysis.

  • Relationships between hydrologic variables are often nonlinear. Usually the functional form of such a relationship is not known a priori. A multivariate, nonparametric regression methodology is provided here for approximating the underlying regression function using locally weighted polynomials. Locally weighted polynomials consider the approximation of the target function through a Taylor series expansion of the function in the neighborhood of the point of estimate. The utility of this nonparametric regression approach is demonstrated through an application to nonparametric short term forecasts of the biweekly Great Salt Lake volume.volume.

  • Yoo and Cook (2007) developed an optimal sufficient dimension reduction methodology for the conditional mean in multivariate regression and it is known that their method is asymptotically optimal and its test statistic has a chi-squared distribution asymptotically under the null hypothesis. To check the effect of dimension used in estimation on regression coefficients and the explanatory power of the conditional mean model in multivariate regression, we applied their method to several simulated data sets with various dimensions. A small simulation study showed that it is quite helpful to search for an appropriate dimension for a given data set if we use the asymptotic test for the dimension as well as results from the estimation with several dimensions simultaneously.

  • Linear regression method, proposed by Haseman and Elston(1972), for detecting linkage to a quantitative trait of sib pairs is a linkage testing method for a single locus and a single trait. However, multivariate methods for detecting linkage are needed, when information from each of several traits that are affected by the same major gene are available on each individual. Amos et al. (1990) extended the regression method of Haseman and Elston(1972) to incorporate observations of two or more traits by estimating the principal component linear function that results in the strongest correlation between the squared pair differences in the trait measurements and identity by descent at a marker locus. But, it is impossible to control the probability of type I errors with this method at present, since the exact distribution of the statistic that they use is yet unknown. In this paper, we propose a multivariate nonparametric trend test for detecting linkage to multiple traits. We compared with a simulation study the efficiencies of multivariate nonparametric trend test with those of the method developed by Amos et al. (1990) for quantitative traits data. For multivariate nonparametric trend test, the results of the simulation study reveal that the Type I error rates are close to the predetermined significance levels, and have in general high powers.

  • This study aims to derive the statistical models for the estimation of the required specifications of a rock TBM as well as for its cutterhead design suitable for a given rock mass condition. From a series of multi-variate regression analysis of 871 TBM driving data and 51 linear rock cutting test results, the optimum models were newly proposed to consider a variety of rock properties and mechanical cutting conditions. When the derived models were applied to two domestic shield tunnels, their predictions of cutter penetration depth, cutter acting forces and cutter spacing were very close to real TBM driving data, showing their high applicability.

  • This empirical study takes the activation approach for the competitive power of Korean shipping companies in the Korea-China liner routes. Data for this study were collected from Korea/ China/ 3rd flag shipping companies through the 500 questionnaires. The data of 250 respondents were analyzed statistically to verify the hypotheses and to induce Regression Equation which could predicts the influencing level of the determinants to competitive advantage for Korean shipping companies on Korea-China Liner Shipping Routes. Factor Analysis/ Cronbach's Alpha/ Principal Analysis/ Multiple Regression Analysis were used in order to test the hypotheses for the empirical study.

  • Sliced inverse regression is a method for reducing the dimension of the explanatory variable X without going through any parametric or nonparametric model fitting process. This method explores the simplicity of the inverse view of regression; that is, instead of regressing the univariate output varable y against the multivariate X, we regress X against y. In this article, we propose bivariate sliced inverse regression, whose method regress the multivariate X against the bivariate output variables $y_1, Y_2$. Bivariate sliced inverse regression estimates the e.d.r. directions of satisfying two generalized regression model simultaneously. For the application of bivariate sliced inverse regression, we decompose the output variable y into two variables, one variable y gained by projecting the output variable y onto the column space of X and the other variable r through projecting the output variable y onto the space orthogonal to the column space of X, respectively and then estimate the e.d.r. directions of the generalized regression model by utilize two variables simultaneously. As a result, bivariate sliced inverse regression of considering the variable y and r simultaneously estimates the e.d.r. directions efficiently and steadily when the regression model is linear, quadratic and nonlinear, respectively.

  • Although longitudinal studies mainly produce multivariate longitudinal data, most of existing statistical models analyze univariate longitudinal data and there is a limitation to explain complex correlations properly. Therefore, this paper describes various methods of modeling the covariance matrix to explain the complex correlations. Among them, modified Cholesky decomposition, modified Cholesky block decomposition, and hypersphere decomposition are reviewed. In this paper, we review these methods and analyze Korean children and youth panel (KCYP) data are analyzed using the Bayesian method. The KCYP data are multivariate longitudinal data that have response variables: School adaptation, academic achievement, and dependence on mobile phones. Assuming that the correlation structure and the innovation standard deviation structure are different, several models are compared. For the most suitable model, all explanatory variables are significant for school adaptation, and academic achievement and only household income appears as insignificant variables when cell phone dependence is a response variable.

  • Statistical methods have been widely used to estimate the remaining battery runtime of mobile smart devices, such as smart phones, smart gears, tablets, and etc. However, existing work available in the literature only considers a particular statistical method. Thus, it is difficult to determine whether statistical methods are applicable to estimating thr remaining battery runtime of mobile devices or not. In this paper, we evaluated the performance of statistical methods applicable to estimating the remaining battery runtime of mobile smart devices. The statistical estimation methods evaluated in this paper are as follows: simple and moving average, linear regression, multivariate adaptive regression splines, auto regressive, polynomial curve fitting, and double and triple exponential smoothing methods. Research results presented in this paper give valuable data of insight to IT engineers who are willing to deploy statistical methods on estimating the remaining battery runtime of mobile smart devices.
