  • Various aging treatments were conducted on AISI 630 martensitic precipitation hardening stainless steel in order to optimize aging condition. Aging treatment was carried out in the vacuum chamber of Ar gas with changing aging temperature from 380℃ to 430℃ and aging time from 2h to 8h at 400℃. After obtaining the optimized aging condition, several nitrocarburizing treatments were done without and with the aging treatment. Nitrocarburizing was performed on the samples with a gas mixture of H2, N2 and CH4 for 15 h at vacuum pressure of 4.0 Torr and discharge voltage of 400V. The corrosion resistance was improved noticeably by combined process of aging and nitrocarburizing treatment, which is attributed to higher chromium and nitrogen content in the passive layer, as confirmed by XPS analysis. The optimized condition is finalized as, 4h aging at 400℃ and then subsequent nitrocarburizing at 400℃ with 25% nitrogen and 4% methane gas for 15h at vacuum pressure of 4.0 Torr and discharge voltage of 400V, resulting in the surface hardness of around 1300 HV0.05 and α'N layer thickness of around 11 ㎛ respectively.

  • This study examined the effect of the heat treatment and alloying elements (B, Ti) on the microstructures and mechanical properties of API J55 steel. The experiments were carried out using various austenization temperatures ($880^{\circ}C$, $910^{\circ}C$, $940^{\circ}C$), cooling methods (water quenching, oil quenching) and tempering temperatures (none, $550^{\circ}C$, $650^{\circ}C$) with J55 and J55+B,Ti steels. The phase diagram and CCT curve were simulated based on the chemical compositions of the J55 and J55+B,Ti steels to predict the microstructures. The results showed that the A1 and A3 temperatures decreased and, as a result, the noses of the ferrite and bainite parts of the CCT curve moved to the right. Various microstructures were formed, namely martensite, bainite, ferrite and pearlite, in accordance with the heat treatment, which had an effect on the hardness, tensile strength and toughness. Martensite was formed after water quenching, but bainite and ferrite appeared after oil quenching with the J55 specimens. On the other hand, martensite was formed, regardless of the cooling method (water quenching, oil quenching), with the J55+B,Ti specimens, because of the improvement of the hardenability caused by the addition of boron. Therefore, the J55+B,Ti specimens exhibited much higher mechanical properties than the J55 specimens, even after the tempering treatment, since the addition of Ti caused fine precipitates to be formed, which inhibited grain growth at the recrystallization temperature.

  • The age-hardening behavior of unreinforced 6061 Al alloy and SiCp/6061 Al alloy composites reinforced with different size of SiC particle (average diameter ; 0.7$\mu\textrm{m}$ and 7.0$\mu\textrm{m}$) was investigated by hardness measurement, calorimetric technique and transmission electron microscopy. At 17$0^{\circ}C$ isothermal aging treatment, the peak aging time of 0.7$\mu\textrm{m}$SiCp/6061Al alloy composite and 7.0$\mu\textrm{m}$SiCp/6061Al alloy composite is shorter than that of unreinforced 6061Al alloy, and the aging of 7.0$\mu\textrm{m}$SiCp/6061Al alloy composite is accelerated more than that of 0.7$\mu\textrm{m}$SiCp/6061Al alloy composite. This acceleration is due to the increase of dislocation density by the compositeness with SiCp and the SiC particle size. In the peak aged condition, the major strengthening phase of these materials is intermediate $\beta$ phase(Mg$_2$Si), and the activation energy for the formation of $\beta$ phase is considerably decreased by the compositeness with SiCp and the increasing of SiC Particle site.

  • Mechanical properties of degraded materials must be measured for evaluating the integrity of the facilities operating at high temperature. In fact it is complicated to obtain the different degraded specimens from an operating facility. Specimens of 1Cr-0.5Mo steel prepared by the isothermal heat treatment at $700^{\circ}C$ were tested, which has been widely used as tubes for heat exchangers and as plates for pressure vessels. The magnetic properties and Rockwell hardness (HRB) were measured at room temperature. The peak interval of Barkhausen noise envelope (PIBNE), coercivity, and hardness decreased with the increase of degradation. The magnetic and mechanical softening of matrix is likely to govern the properties of the specimen more than the hardening of grain boundary by carbide precipitations. The degradation of test material may be determined by the linear correlation of PIBNE and HRB. Degradation of 1Cr-0.5Mo steel could well be nondestructively evaluated by PIBNE measured with surface type probe.
