  • Consolidants based on tetraethoxysilane (TEOS) such as alkoxysilanes have been widely used for the consolidation of decaying stone heritages. Low-viscosity alkoxysilanes penetrate inside the decaying stone and polymerize within the porous structure of the decaying stone, significantly increasing the cohesion of the material. However, TEOS-based consolidants suffer from practical drawbacks, such as crack formation of the gel during the drying phase due to the developed capillary force, which is typical for TEOS-based consolidants. We prepared new consolidants TEOS-based consolidants containing flexible (3-glycidoxypropyl)trimethoxysilane (GPTMS) and silica nanoparticles (or polyhedral oligomeric silsesquioxanes (POSS)) in order to reduce capillary force development during gel drying. Since the consolidants should have a good interaction with the component of the stone in order to connect the isolate grains of decaying stone, the adhesion interaction of the developed consolidants on the surface of the granite was macroscopically investigated by the ISO 2409 cross cutting test. The adhesion interaction decreased with the addition of silica nanoparticle and POSS while it increased with the addition of GPTMS in TEOS solution.

  • Low-viscosity alkoxysilanes that polymerize into the porous network of decayed stone by a sol-gel process are widely used as stone consolidants. During drying, the gel network contracts due to capillary pressure generated by solvent evaporation. We have prepared tetraethoxysilane mixed solution containing methyltrisilane, ethyl trisilane and (3-glycidyloxypropyl)trimethoxysilane having epoxy ring in order to reduce the shrinkage happened inside the stone porous structure during the gel formation. Mixed solutions were applied into sandstone and granites and characterized by FT-IR, SEM. The gelation time, water uptake, contact angles were measured and compared with those of the commercial stone conservation materials.

  • While consolidants based on tetraethoxysilane (TEOS) have been widely used for the consolidation of decaying stone heritages, TEOS-based consolidants suffer from practical drawbacks, such as crack formation of the gel during the drying phase due to the developed capillary force. We have prepared new TEOS-based consolidants containing flexible (3-glycidoxypropyl) trimethoxysilane (GPTMS) in order to reduce capillary force development during gel drying. In this study, we have prepared TEOS/GPTMS-based consolidants containing ETEOS in order to improve the surface hydrophobisity. The physical properties of the TEOS/GPTMS/ETEOS solution with different hydrolysis were compared with those of the commercial products Wacker OH$^{(R)}$. The contact angle of the surface increased with the addition of the ETEOS, which is higher than that of Wacker OH$^{(R)}$. The sol-gel mechanism was manipulated by the degree of hydrolysis as well as the amount of ETEOS. The properties and the applicability of the developed consolidants for the decayed Korean granites are also investigated.

  • The consolidation application of SILRES BS OH 100 was investigated, which has been used for consolidation of the weathered shale. The liquid SILRES BS OH 100 was polymerized by the sol-gel reaction with air moisture, and the XRD patterns showed that the gel was an amorphous solid. The drastic weight reduction of the sample was found by differential thermal analysis, which was followed to the formation of $Si(OH)_4$ particles. After consolidation, the polymerized gel was filled into the voids within the shale. The capillary water absorption of the consolidated shale was reduced to 48.7%, and the abrasive strength was improved.

  • The Bayon style Avalokitesvara statue from the $13^{th}$ century Angkor period is on display at the Cambodia Angkor Conservation Office. This statue is composed of dark green felthspathic greywacke, the surface of which has been shown light brown discoloration, detected calcite crystallization. As a result of condition assessment, the statue was damaged due to overlap scaling and cracking. Ultrasonic tests have investigated remarkable physical weathering area, flaking and fragmentation in lower velocity. The physical condition of the statue requires a conservation method that improves the binding power. To protect against salt weathering and to ensure physical stability, new conservation material composed of mixed ethyl silicate and sandstone powder similar to that composing the statue was created. The material affected by damage was removed and replaced with the new conservation material.

  • The stone lantern of the four guardian kings in the Beopjusa temple at Boeun was mainly made of biotite granodiorite consisting of porphyritic-textured potassium feldspar and included in ilmenite series. A base stone made of alkali granite was buried, after founded its place during an earlier restoration process. Cracking and break out are noticeable on this object. In addition, discoloration, salt crusting, and epiphytes were observed. The lantern was vulnerable in terms of physical and structural stability caused by cracking in the front and back of the light chamber and in the non-horizontal direction. According to the conservational condition of the stone lantern, structural reinforcement was carried out based on calculations, including those on the position, size, and anchor length of the titanium stiffener. Chemical and biological pollutants were washed off without damage to the surface of the stone material. Oxygenated iron pieces were replaced with titanium. Ethyl silicate was applied to the surface of the lantern for consolidation and smooth drainage.

  • The Tae-Jo Geonwolleung is the tomb of the first king Tae-Jo of the Joseon Dynasty in the complex of the Royal Tombs of the Joseon Dynasty which is listed in World Heritage, and it contains various types of stone properties. The material of the stone properties consist of a single type of medium-grained biotite granite, however, each properties have different intensity and types in deterioration phenomena according to their locations and purposes. The major deterioration types of the stones are analyzed as physical decomposition and biodeterioration. The exfoliation, breaking-out and granular decomposition are widespread types of the deterioration throughout the entire burial mound stone properties and surrounding stone properties. On the other hands, the colonization of mosses and plants, and contamination by foreign materials are found more frequent in the burial mound stone properties as these stones are in contact with the soil of the tomb mound and moisture in the soil helped biodeterioration. It is suggested that anti-biology treatment and physical reinforcement are applied to the deteriorated stones to prevent further damage on the stone components of the tomb.

  • In the mordern society, the reliance on the cyber domain and the cyber connectivity has been increasingly strengthened. Due to this phenomenon, the cyberterror against critical infrastructures and state organs might lead to fatal consequences. Lately, North Korea's cyberattacks against South Korea's national organizations and financial computer networks are becoming more and more intelligent and sophisticated. The cyberattacks against such critical infrastructures have caused enormous economic loss and social disorder. This paper is designed to examine comparatively the cyberterror related laws and organizations of the advanced countries such as U.S. and U.K. and to draw implications. Although those countries are under different institutional and cultural backgrounds with varying security envrionments, they are identically pursuing measures by establishing government-wide counterterror system for coordination and cooperation. They are also commonly focusing upon creating new organizations equipped with new system and upon enhancing intelligence performance and devising punishment regulations. Korea is lack of framework laws regulating cyber security, having only scattered individual laws. Since such legal base is far from efficient counterterror activities, it is necessary that the legal and policy response of the advanced countries should be closely studied for selective introduction. That will eventually lead to legislation of cyber security law. With such legislation on hand, it is subsequently required to strengthen crisis management for prevention of cyberterror and to create joint response team, cooperating with private organizations.

  • A stone seated bodhisattva (Sinsu5971) was discovered in Pyeongchang-gun, Gangwon-do in 1974 and was transferred to the Chuncheon National Museum upon its opening in 2002. The statue had damage to wide areas and was thus difficult to restore. This study utilized 3D scanning and 3D printing technologies to identify the overall form of the statue and the degree of damage, which allowed the restoration of lost portions that otherwise could not have been accurately restored to their original shape. Prior to the conservation treatment, the pigments used to decorate the surface were investigated using an optical microscope, and their main components were analyzed with a p-XRF (Potable X-ray Fluorescence Analyzer). The deteriorated lacquered surface was stabilized using animal glue and consolidated with stone strengthener (OH-100). The investigation found that the surface of the statue was made of zeolite that was lacquered and then gilded. As for pigments, white lead was used for the white color and red lead and cinnabar were used for red. The lost portions were redesigned by mirroring the remaining parts with 3D technologies. However, it was difficult to affix the 3D printing outputs to the statue without visible gaps since the damaged parts suffered flection. The portions of the outputs to be connected to the statue were thus modified and supplemented. It was also difficult to collect data on the properties of 3D printing materials due to the lack of previous in-depth study. These obstacles are subjects for further study.
