대한인쇄문화협회(회장 김남수)는 지난 1월 12일 인쇄문화회관 5층 회의실에서 서체 기증식을 가졌다. 이날 기증식은 (주)릭스코(대표이사 김재욱)와 (주)헤움디자인(대표이사 김진덕)이 자체 개발한 서체를 각각 20종, 총 40종을 대한인쇄문화협회에 무상기증하기로 합의한데 따른 행사였다. 2월 1일부터 인협의 회원사들은 폭넓은 범위에 걸쳐 활용도가 높게 서체를 사용할 수 있게 되었으며 향후 경영에도 적잖은 도움이 될 것으로 보인다.

한글의 신속하고 정확한 정보전달 기능을 유지 발전시킴과 동시에, 정보 전달의 목적 및 효율성을 높이기 위하여, 인간심리에 직접 영향 미치는 시각적 이미지를 지니는 조형적 문자의 서체 및 기능 개발에 필요한 현행 한글서체들의 시각적 이미지에 대한 분석적 연구를 시도하였다. 대표적인 24개의 현행 한글서체에 대한 이미지를 표본조사 및 수치분류적 기법에 의한 이미지 특성을 분석하였다. 연구결과, 현행 한글서체는 크게 5개의 그룹으로 구분되며, 예서체는 현행 한글서체 중에서 가장 독특하고 집중된 이미지를 지닌 서체로 나타났다. 한글서체 개발은 수치적 분석에 의하여 방향정립 및 높은 예측성을 지닐 수 있으며. 목적지향적인 폰트개발 및 균형있는 서체운용 체계의 운용에 의하여 극대화될 수 있다.

개인용 휴대폰에 연예인 전용 서체가 탑재되고 주문자 상표 부착생산(OEM:Original Equipment Manufacturing) 방식을 활용, 기업이 전용 서체를 보유하는 등 국내 폰트제작 환경이 다각화되고 있다. 또 북대방정(중국 서체)을 개발해 오히려 중국에 역수출하는 서체 업체도 등장하면서 세계화를 추구하는 글꼴 개발 열기는 달아오르고 있다.

Fonts are digitized into a file and recognized as a intellectual property by the revision of the design protection act in 2005. Fonts are passed on to the users and are developed into design products. In this study, we have developed a model of font usage system as a design product based on Ahn Se Yoon's brand value system model. Based on the usage system model of the typeface, the lifecycle as a design product of the typeface was defined and analyzed as four different phases (introduction, growth, maturity, and decline.) In this study, To investigate the lifecycle of fonts, we selected the Gulim-chae which is most widely used as digital font files in Korea and are now in decline phase. Through this study, We hope that it will be useful for developing fonts, licensing system, and establishing brand strategies.

폰트관련기술은 폰트의 개발에 사용되는 폰트개발기술과 개발된 폰트의 효율적인 이용에 관한 폰트처리기술로 구분된다. 본 논문에서는 폰트개발기술의 대표적인 예인 서체설계지원시스템 특히 한글폰트의 개발을 쉽고 빠르게 할 수 있는 시스템의 개발에 대하여 논한다. 지금까지의 폰트개발은 서체전문가의 원도제작과정과 제작된 원도를 폰트화하는 과정으로 진행되었으나 본 시스템은 서체전문가가 직접 컴퓨터의 지원을 받아 원도를 제작하며 원도제작과정의 결과로 폰트가 만들어지도록 폰트개발과정을 일원화하도록 하였다. 이를 위하여 서체설계과정을 정의하고, 정의된 서체설계과정을 컴퓨터상에서 구현하기 위한 기법을 개발하였다. 본고에서는 참조설계로 표현되는 서체설계지원시스템의 개발을 위하여 고안된 기법중 글자의 중심선과 굵기로 윤곽선을 자동생성하는 기법과 글자의 특징을 이루는 돌기를 라이브러리화하여 운영하는 기법에 대하여 논하기로 한다. 시스템 개발은 PC상에서 VGA그래픽카드와 mouse를 사용하여 구현하였다.

본 논문에서는 한글 문자의 세리프(serif) 계열과 산세리프(sans-serif) 계열의 분류를 위한 특징을 제안한다. 한글의 서체는 세로획의 시작 부분에 장식 세리프(돌기)가 있는 세리프 계열과 그렇지 않은 산세리프 계열로 나눌 수 있다. 제안하는 한글 문자의 서체 분류 방법은 세리프 형태에서 추출한 특징을 이용하여 세리프 또는 산세리프 클래스로 분류하고, 각 클래스별로 적합한 특징 및 분류기를 학습하여 보다 다양한 서체를 인식하도록 계층적으로 설계한다. 제안한 특징의 유용성을 입증하기 위한 실험은 명조, 바탕, 궁서, 고딕, 돋움, 굴림 서체의 3,000개 낱자 영상에 적용하였다.

어도비는 지난 7월 16일 한국어를 비롯해 중국어, 일본어, 라틴어, 그리스어, 키릴 자모까지 지원하는 오픈 소스 서체 '본고딕(Source Han Sans)'을 출시했다. '본고딕' 오픈 소스서체를 사용하면 글로벌 사용자를 대상으로 한 인쇄물이나 웹 파일을 만들 때 언어에 상관없이 하나의 통일된 서체를 사용할 수 있다.

Purpose: The aim of this study was to determine a suitable type and size of Hangul fonts for printed materials in the presbyopic age. Methods: Based on the most common Hangul fonts used today, three types of fonts were used Hamchrombatang, Sinmoonmyungjo and Sinmyungjo at small font sizes in the range 9-11 point (pt). Subjects were 101 volunteers aged 41 through 85 years. Near visual acuity (VA) was corrected to read VA 0.5 at 40 cm after distance correction. The subjects were asked to read words containing 88 characters in 10 pt after a question about preference. Readability was assessed by reading rate that was calculated as the number of words read correctly in one minute (words per minute, wpm). Results: The most preferred font type was Simmyungjo at small font sizes. Although preferred font sizes were different in each font type, Sinmyungjo was generally preferred at 10 pt more than other fonts. Hamchrombatang and Sinmyungjo were read significantly faster than Sinmoonmyungjo. There was a weak negative relationship between readability and age in Sinmyungjo. In comparing between the top 10% and the bottom 10% group sorted by reading rate, the top group showed lower average age and addition than the bottom group, however there were no significant differences in reading rate among the fonts. Conclusions: Although increasing age tends to be low in readability for Sinmyungjo, in the light of preferred font and readability, it is recommended to use a 10 pt Sinmyungjo font in printed materials for the presbyopic age.

"한글의 시각적 이미지 다양화에 관한 연구" 에서의 네모틀 고수형의 한글 이미지 연구에 이어 금번에는 컴퓨터에서 지원 사용되는 탈네모꼴의 한글 12종을 제목용과 본문용으로 나누고 각각 그 굵기에 따른 이미지를 표본조사 및 수치분류적 기법에 의한 이미지 특성을 분석하였다. 연구결과, 한글 탈내모꼴 서체는 크게 3개의 그룹으로 구분되며, 전반적으로 그 이미지의 강도에 있어 약한것으로 나타났으며, 각 서체의 제목용및 본문용의 각각의 굵기에 해당하는 이미지가 동일한 것으로 나타나 안정된 이미지를 보유하는 서체로는 스케치체와로 나타났다. 이 같은 한글서체의 이미지 분류 연구는, 한글서체 개발이 수치적 분석에 의하여 방향정립 및 높은 예측성을 지닐 수 있으며, 목적지향적인 폰트개발 및 균형있는 서체운용 체계의 운용에 의하여 극대화될 수 있다.

Classification criteria for Korean alphabet (Hangul) fonts are undeveloped in comparison to numerical classification systems for Roman alphabet fonts. This study finds important features that distinguish typeface styles in order to help develop numerical criteria for Hangul font classification. We find features that determine the characteristics of the two different styles using a convolutional neural network to create a model that analyzes the learned filters as well as distinguishes between serif and sans-serif styles.
