Analysis of Spatial Association in Seoul Metropolitan Area (서울대도시권 도시 간 공간적 연관성 분석)

  • 본 논문에서는 서울대도시권의 1990년 이후 공간구조 변화에 대하여 도시 간 공간적 연관성에 초점을 맞추어 분석하였다. 서울대도시권을 포함하고 있는 서울시와 인천 및 경기도 도시들 간의 1990년에서 2005년에 이르는 15년의 통근 통학자 자료를 바탕으로 통근 통학비율과 Moran's I를 통하여 서울대도시권 내 도시들의 공간적 연관성을 분석한 결과, 서울대도시권 내에서 서울시의 인구는 경기지역으로 분산되고 있으며 외곽지역으로 이동하는 경향을 보이고 있다. 이는 서울대도시권의 교외화 확산이 심화되고 있다는 것을 의미하며, 또한 인접지역 간 매우 강한 공간적 연관성을 보임이 확인되었다. 분석 결과는 서울대도시권 관리와 정책수립을 뒷받침하는 기초자료로 활용될 수 있을 것이다.

  • Overpopulation has been one of the most serious problem of the Seoul Metropolitan Area (SMA), which consists of the City of Seoul, Incheon, and the whole of Gyeonggi Province. People have been still moving into SMA, especially being concentrated into the fringe of Seoul. This study examines the inner city decline phenomenon of SMA which can be easily found in large cities over the world, based on the demographic data of these area. In addition, this study monitors the imbalance in growing of SMA by analyzing RMI (Rank Mobility Index), and the inverse relation between the self sufficiency of the adjacent area and the commuting rate to Seoul by analyzing commuting data. Even though the total population has been unchanged, the internal change of population was substantial. The growth of Seoul Metro region was placed near the city of Seoul, especially commuter data reassured the population concentrations. The results will be useful in urban planning and growth management.

Patterns of Migration in the Busan Metropolitan Area( I ) : Population Structure and Migration (부산 대도시권의 인구이동( I ) : 인구구조와 인구이동)

  • To grasp the migration characteristics of the Busan metropolitan area(BMA), this study analyzed the change of population and households, and the migration at the intra-regional and inter-regional scales. The major findings of the study are as follows: First, the ratio of population and households of the BMA to the whole country has continuously decreased, especially those 25 to 39 years of age greatly decreased. Second, the ratio of intra-regional migration is relatively high, and the ratio of inter-regional migration is relatively low in the BMA compared to the Seoul metropolitan area. Thus, Busan seems to be less integrated with the urban fringe. Third, the out-migration towards the Seoul metropolitan area from Busan has increased, so that Seoul metropolitan area becomes to have more considerable influence upon the population decrease in Busan.

  • The Metropolitan Areas have experienced the phenomenon that some of their peripheral parts emerged as a core business area because of the relocation of residential and economic activities from the central area. An important phenomenon in the spatial transformation of metropolitan area is the weakening of centrality in the center and the increasing strength of centrality in the periphery. This paper examined the changing patterns of spatial interaction in the Seoul Metropolitan area through an analysis on outflow trips. Outflow trip by Seoul decreased in nearby regions and increased in remote regions, however as times goes by, the spatial patterns of the largest outflow trip destination were diversified and the rate of outflow trip to Seoul has decreased in the periphery regions. This research reveals that the most remarkable changes of spatial interactions occurred nearby regions of Seoul and also the changes of outflow trip by Seoul was also distinct. In relation to this, the results arising from the similarity analysis by the variance of trip clearly show the changing spatial patterns of interaction in Yongin, Seoul, Suwon and Hwaseong.

Spatial Association of Population Concentration in Seoul Metropolitan Area (서울대도시권 인구집중의 공간적 연관성 연구)

  • This paper analyzes the spatial patterns of population distribution in Seoul Metropolitan Area in terms of spatial association using spatial statistics and spatial exploratory technique. Our empirical analysis based on global index shows that, in Seoul Metropolitan Area, the population had been distributed with strong positive spatial association over the period of 1980-2005. It implies that the population of each region is affected by the population distribution of adjacent regions. In addition, the analysis using local index was conducted for detecting the local patterns of spatial association, and the result shows that the clusters of population had been moved in the direction of West(Incheon and Bucheon) and South(Anyang and Seongnam) of Seoul where a large scale of lands or towns were developed over the period. These results will be the preliminary data for establishing management and development plans of Seoul Metropolitan Area.

Development of Integrated Accessibility Measurement Algorithm for the Seoul Metropolitan Public Transportation System (서울 대도시권 대중교통체계의 통합 시간거리 접근성 산출 알고리즘 개발)

  • This study proposes an integrated accessibility measurement algorithm, which is applied to the Seoul Metropolitan public transportation system consisting of bus and subway networks, and analyzes the result. We construct a public transportation network graph linking bus-subway networks and take the time distance as the link weight in the graph. We develop a time-distance algorithm to measure the time distance between each pair of transit stations based on the T-card transaction database. The average travel time between nodes has been computed via the shortest-path algorithm applied to the time-distance matrix, which is obtained from the average speed of each transit route in the T-card transaction database. Here the walking time between nodes is also taken into account if walking is involved. The integrated time-distance accessibility of each node in the Seoul Metropolitan public transportation system has been computed from the T-card data of 2013. We make a comparison between the results and those of the bus system and of the subway system, and analyze the spatial patterns. This study is the first attempt to measure the integrated time-distance accessibility for the Seoul Metropolitan public transportation system consisting of 16,277 nodes with 600 bus routes and 16 subway lines.

Income and Commuting Time in the Seoul Metropolitan Area (서울 대도시권 통근자의 소득이 통근시간에 미치는 영향)

  • We examine the major factors governing the travel time for commuters in the Seoul metropolitan area. To identify the determinants of the commuting time for residents with jobs in the city centre, a multiple regression analysis is performed using household survey data. The results reveal that commuters in Seoul place higher value on time than on living space. Thus, we may conclude that recent trends in income segregation in Seoul are not the result of increased housing demand but of dispersed jobs and better amenities offered in the suburbs.

  • To predict the urban growth trend and to prevent the metropolitan problems, it is important to track the spatio-temporal changes in the urban spatial structure. Commuting is inevitable and regular activities emerging in the metropolitan region. Therefore, it can be a useful to examine the interregional interaction and the urban spatial change. The purpose of this study is to investigate the urban interaction between Seoul and cities around Seoul Metropolitan Region, and GIS functions helped analysis and visualized results. An analysis of current commuting data using the Gravity Model suggests that the interaction between Seoul and its peripheral cities has been intensified from 1990 to 2000 and that the urban interaction was closely related to the distance. And the southward distribution of the cities having a strong interaction with Seoul accounts for the imbalance in growing of Seoul Metropolitan Region.
