  • The commercial cermet cutting tools consist of multi-carbide and a binder metal of iron group, such as cobalt and nickel which are ferromagnetic. In this paper, a new approach to evaluate the mechanical properties of TiCN based cermet by magnetic properties were studied in relation to binder content and sintering conditions. The experimental cermet was prepared using commercial composition with the other binder contents by PM process. It was found that the magnetic properties of the sintered cermets remarkably depended on the microstructure and the total carbon content. The magnetic saturation was proportional to increment of coercive force. At high carbon content in sintered cermet, the magnetic saturation was increased by decreasing the concentration of solutes such as W, Mo, Ti in Co-Ni binder. As the coercive force increases, the hardness usually increases. The strength and toughness of the cermet also increased with increasing the magnetic saturation. The measurement of magnetic properties made it possible to evaluate the mechanical properties in the cermet cutting tools.

  • The purpose of this study is to investigate the difference in cutting characteristics of cermet, carbide and coated carbide tools in the similar application range via turning test of various conditions. The cermet and carbide tools in the range of ISO P10 grade were developed using optimum compositions with a view to obtaining a high toughness and hardness by PM process. First mechanical properties were characterized on these tools. Experimental results of wear behaviour and resistance to fracturing were presented and discussed in the turning of gray cast iron and alloy steels by cermet, carbide and coated carbide tools. The coated carbide tool shows similar cutting performance compared to the cermet, while the cermet has better combination of wear resistance and toughness of high speed (V=500m/min) cutting in comparison with carbide and coated carbide tools, and also shows a potentiality for cast iron cutting. Fe adhesive behaviour on the tools and surface roughness of workpieces were explained by chemical affinity between tools and workpieces.

  • TiCN based submicron cermet and similar ISO grad of the conventional cermets with TiCN of different particle size were produced by PM process, and their microstructure, mechanical properties and cutting performance were compared. The microstructure of submicron cermet was more homogeneous and showed much finer microstructure, resulting in better hardness and fracture toughness. The submicron cermet tools achieved excellent cutting performance such as wear resistance and toughness in comparison with two grades of the conventional cermets in millimg test. The relationship between microstrucure, mechanical properties and cutting performance of these cermet tools was discussed. The submicron cermet tools revealed for their potential to wide application range and interrupt cutting because of their superior wear resistance and toughness combinations.

  • For the fabrication of titanium diboride($TiB_2$)- based cermet as applications of cutting tools and wear resistant materials, a binder metal with good mechanical properties and sinterability is essential. In this study, SUS316L was chosen for the binder metal to obtain a new $TiB_2$ cermet with superior hardness and toughness.$TiB_2$-SUS316L cermets were densified to relative density of more than 99% by pressureless sintering at temperature above $1650^{\circ}C$ The flexural strength was up to 1290MPa at 10vo1%SUS316L cermet in spite of the formation of $Fe_2$B phase during the sintering. The fracture toughness was obtained up to $6MPam^{1/2}$ with Victors hardness over 18Gpa. These hardness and fracture toughness combinations are better than those of conventional cermet. The high temperature strength remarkably decreased by the plastic deformations of SUS316L binder phase at nearby $800^{\circ}C$ .
