  • Recently, biometric techniques such as face recognition, finger-print recognition and iris recognition have been widely applied for various applications including door access control, finance security and electric passport. This paper presents the method of using finger-vein pattern for the personal identification. In general, when the finger-vein image is acquired from the camera, various conditions such as the penetrating amount of the infrared light and the camera noise make the segmentation of the vein from the background difficult. This in turn affects the system performance of personal identification. To solve this problem, we propose the novel and fast method for extracting the finger-vein region. The proposed method has two advantages compared to the previous methods. One is that we adopt a locally adaptive thresholding method for the binarization of acquired finger-vein image. Another advantage is that the simple morphological opening and closing are used to remove the segmentation noise to finally obtain the finger-vein region from the skeletonization. Experimental results showed that our proposed method could quickly and exactly extract the finger-vein region without using various kinds of time-consuming filters for preprocessing.

  • Recently, the personal identification technologies using vein pattern of back of the hand, palm, and finger have been developed actively because it has the advantage that the vein blood vessel in the body is impossible to damage, make a replication and forge. However, it is difficult to extract clearly the vein region from captured vein images through common image prcessing based region segmentation method, because of the light scattering and non-uniform internal tissue by skin layer and inside layer skeleton, etc. Especially, it takes a long time for processing time and makes a discontinuity of blood vessel just in a image because it has non-uniform illumination due to use a locally different adaptive threshold for the binarization of acquired finger-vein image. To solve this problem, we propose illumination normalization based fast method for extracting the finger-vein region. The proposed method has advantages compared to the previous methods as follows. Firstly, for remove a non-uniform illumination of the captured vein image, we obtain a illumination component of the captured vein image by using a low-pass filter. Secondly, by extracting the finger-vein path using one time binarization of a single threshold selection, we were able to reduce the processing time. Through experimental results, we confirmed that the accuracy of extracting the finger-vein region was increased and the processing time was shortened than prior methods.

  • Consumers' awareness of product value, and their product preferences, are becoming increasingly influential in product development, particularly in corporations' efforts in manufacturing products with a competitive edge. Corporations conduct surveys on consumers' product satisfaction and preferences and conduct in-depth studies on consumer needs. They then manufacture products in accordance with the results of these surveys and studies. With the necessity and demand for digital door lock products recently growing, this research sought to explore product competitiveness reinforcement factors that could facilitate market penetration, and to formulate corresponding design strategies. In-depth consumer interviews were also conducted to identify consumer lifestyles and needs. Furthermore, consumer preference images, purchase and use-related patterns, and the status of door lock markets were studied. In the past, to design and manufacture consumer-oriented products, corporations primarily resorted to the improvement of the products' technological features. At present, the users' product preferences and the ways that they use these products are the factors that determine product design. Consumers today tend to adjust their lifestyles according to available products, and prefer products that have greater value in terms of lifestyle and culture. Strategic points for reinforcing competitiveness were presented in this study: first, offering different values that will enhance consumer satisfaction, second, positively developing bio-recognizable methods that will boost consumer preference, third, meeting the consumers' expectations that door lock products should not be mere 'entrance and exit control' systems, but network security systems and fourth, adopting convenient authentication methods backed by advanced technologies.

  • A total of 127 Korean native black pigs(gilt 30, boar 97) were used to investigate the carcass properties, yields of retail cut and meat quality. The average live weight, chilled carcass percentage and retail cut percentage used in this study were 74.69kg, 71.14% and 61.09% for boar, and 75.5kg, 73.88% and 56.25% for gilt, respectively. Although gilts were higher in live weight and chilled carcass percentage whereas lower in retail cut percentage when compared to boars, there was no significantly difference between gender(p<0.05). Gilts had higher fat contents than boars regardless of weight range groups. Protein contents increased as slaughter weight increased for gilt and boar groups. Gilts contained high intramuscular fat contents had significantly lower Warner-Bratzler shear force(WBS) and water holding capacity(WHC) when compared to boar in the same weight range group(p<0.05). There was no significantly different in meat color(p>0.05) although gilts had higher L(lightness), a(redness) and b(yellowness) values when compared to the same group of boar. From the result of this study can be used for the grading guideline and quality evaluation standard of Korean native black pigs by gender and live weight.

  • In this study, the relationship between selenoprotein concentrations in blood and stomach cancer have been searched for Korean. The concentration of each selenoprotein in blood serum was analyzed and the correlation between the concentration and stomach cancer was studied to find a potential for using Selenium as a biomarker. In concentration determination, a simple calibration curve method was used with the monitoring of m/z 78 without the use of solid phase extraction. This is a lot more simple than the method using SPE with post column isotope dilution. The result obtained from the analysis of CRM BCR-637, 72.20±3.35 ng·g−1, showed similar value of reference value (81±7 ng·g−1). The total concentration of Se for the controlled group, cardiovascular patients group, was 105.70±21.20 ng·g−1. This value was the same as normal healthy person reported earlier. Each selenoprotein concentration of GPx, SelP and SeAlb was 26.12±7.84, 65.15±14.50, 14.43±6.99 ng·g−1, respectively. The distribution of each selenoprotein was 24.7%, 61.6%, and 13.7%, which was similar to the normal person. The result of stomach cancer patients, the total concentration of Se was 76.11±28.12 ng·g−1 and each concentration of GPx, SelP and SeAlb was 15.41±9.01, 50.83±17.91, and 9.87±5.21 ng·g−1, respectively. The total and each selenoprotein concentration level showed significant decrease for the stomach cancer patients. The level of decrease was 41.0% for GPx, 22.0% for SelP, and 31.6% for SeAlb. However, the distribution of each selenoprotein was not much different. Either total Selenium or each selenoprotein could be used as a possible index for the diagnosis of cancer. However, in age group study, it is shown that young age group (30's-40's) did not show much difference.
