As a part of electro-mechanical totally implantable artificial heart (TIAH) program, a transcut- aneous energy transmission system has been developed. By mutual magnetic induction between the first coil on the skin and the subcutaneously implanted second coil, the system transfers elctrical power through the skin. This research aimed at minimizing the size of the implanted part as well as maximizing the transfer efficiency. Using class I amplifier, we achieved above 75% power transfer efficiency at average 40W power transfer level which is required for normal TIAH operation. In vivo performance of the developed system and bio-compatibility of the material used in Implanted parts were evaluated through animal experiments.
Wireless access network section needs strong security which supports high data rate and mobility not to invade patient's privacy by exposing patient's sensitive biometric from automatic implantable device that is adapted to u-healthcare service. This paper builds test bed and performs assessment and measurement of security ability of WiMAX network to transmit and receive mobile patient's biometric by building WiMAX network in wireless access network not to expose paitne's biometirc at wireless access network section to the third person. Specially, this paper compares and assesses data security, MAC control message security, handover conection delay, and frame loss and bandwidth of ECDH at the layer of WiMAX security compliance, WiMAX MAC IPSec, and MAC.
Polyethylenimine (PEI) is a cationic polymer that can bind to negatively charged biomaterials such as nucleic acids through strong electrostatic interactions. Based on these properties, PEI has been used as an efficient drug delivery system for a long time. However, the strong cationic nature of PEI has the problem of causing cytotoxicity by non-specific interaction with anionic biological materials in the cells. In order to overcome these problems, many researchers have developed various types of biocompatible PEI-based materials. In this review, we would like to introduce the recent developments of functional PEI and their applications in biomedical research.

Chinese Hamster Ovary( CHO) cells were cultured on the surface-modified polymers described in the previous study( "Polymer Surfaces for Cell Adhesion. 1. Surface Modification of Polymers and ESCA Analysis, " J. of KOSOMBE, Vol. 10, No. 1, 43-51, 1989). Among the physicochemical treatment methods. the chloric acid treatment was found to be the best method of rendering the polymer surfaces adhesive for CHO cells probably due to the high density of hydroxyl groups on the surface. Among the biological methods, the fibronectin treatment was best for CHO cell-compatibility probably due to specific active sites existed on the tell-binding domains of the fibronectin structure. When we compare the cell-compatibility of the chloric acid - and the fibronectin -treated PET surfaces, the number of cells attached on the surfaces were increased by 460.5 % and 559.0 % and, respectively, after 32 hr CHO cell culture, compared to that of untreated PET.eated PET.
A microsurgery telerobotic system has been developed to aid surgeons from physiological tremor, eye stram, hand tremor, contagious and radioactive hazard. This paper identifies four general areas of advanced microsurgery and analyzes the motion, tools, accuracy and applying forces with respect to microsurgery tasks, and proposes the criteria to design the microsurgical robot. The analysis of microsurgery can be helpful to clarify some basic concept and design of surgical robots. Based on this analysis results, we propose an efficient in-parallel-platform manipulator having a special kinematic structure suitable for microsurgery.
To develop better blood compatibility of commercial polyurethane(PU), PU surface was chemically modified wi th a hydrophobic perfluorocarhon or a hydrophilic polyethylene oxide(PEO) and/or sulfonated groups, respectively. The water contact angle of modified PUs varied from $110^{\circ}$ to $0^{\circ}$. All the modified PUs were more blood compatible than untreated PU. In particular, PEO-sulfonate grafted PUs showed a very enhanced antithrombogenicity due to the synergistic effect of PEO and $SO_3$ groups. Therefore more hydrophobic and hydrophilic PU surfaces are promising for improving the blood compatibility.
Three-dimensional (3D) printing is driving major innovation in various areas including engineering, manufacturing, art, education and biosciences such as biochemical engineering, tissue engineering and regenerative medicine. Recent advances have enabled 3D printing of biocompatible materials, cells and supporting components into complex 3D functional tissues. Compared with non-biological printing, 3D bioprinting involves additional complexities which require the integration of technologies from the fields of biochemical engineering, biomaterial sciences, cell biology, physics, pharmaceutics and medical science.
The purpose of this paper is the evaluation of a permeability and blood compatibility for silicone/polypropylene combined membrane. Despite the overall good performances of polypropylene membrane, its long-lasting usage for artificial lung has been limited by serum leakage. In order to overcome this problem, we have newly fabricated polydimethylsiloxane(silicone)/polypropylene combined membrane(SPCM). SPCM has been proved to be serum leakage free in hours experimental. It has shown good long-lasting gas transfer and durability features.
The tinnitus retraining therapy(TRT) is an effective method for treating tinnitus patients. This therapy use the white noise to stimulate auditory cells for a wide frequency range. In this paper, the small white noise generator using the thermal noise is proposed. And frequency response controller which can compensate the frequency response changed by the human outer and middle ear system is proposed. We can know that proposed system is more proper type on a purpose of the tinnitus retraining therapy comparing with conventional white noise generator.
