  • Implantable flexible sensor using polymer/metal multilayer processing technique for telemetrical real-time blood pressure monitoring is presented. The realized sensor is mechanically flexible, which can be less invasively implanted and attached on the outside of blood vessel to monitor the variation of blood pressure. Therefore, unlike conventional detecting methods which install sensor on the inside of vessel, the suggested monitoring method can monitor the relative blood pressure without injuring blood vessel. The major factor of sudden death of adults is a disease of artery like angina pectoris and myocardial infarction. A disease of circulatory system resulted from vessel occlusion by plaque can be preventable and treatable early through continuous blood pressure monitoring. The procedure of suggested new method for monitoring variation of blood pressure is as follows. First, integrated sensor is attached to the outer wall of blood vessel. Second, it detects mechanical contraction and expansion of blood vessel. And then, reader antenna recognizes it using telemetrical method as the relative variation of blood pressure. There are not any active devices in the sensor system; therefore, the transmission of energy and signal depends on the principle of mutual inductance between internal antenna of LC resonator and external antenna of reader. To confirm the feasibility of the sensing mechanism, in vitro experiment using silicone rubber tubing and blood is practiced. First of all, pressure is applied to the silicone tubing which is filled by blood. Then the shift of resonant frequency with the change of applied pressure is measured. The frequency of 2.4 MHz is varied while the applied pressure is changed from 0 to 213.3 kPa. Therefore, the sensitivity of implantable blood pressure is 11.25 kHz/kPa.

  • Generalized 2D correlation spectroscopy has been applied extensively to the analysis of spectral data sets obtained during the observation of a system under some external perturbation. It is used in various fields of spectroscopy including IR, Raman, UV, fluorescence, X-ray diffraction, and X-ray absorption spectroscopy (XAS) as well as chromatography. 2D hetero-spectral correlation analysis compares two completely different types of spectra obtained for a system under the same perturbation. Because of the wide range of applications of this technique, it has become one of the standard analytical techniques for the analytical chemistry, physical chemistry, biochemistry, and so on, and for studies of polymers, biomolecules, nanomaterials, etc. In this paper, we will introduce the principle of generalized 2D correlation spectroscopy and its applications that we have studied.

  • Many cases of acute cardiac shock and cardiac arrest in emergency room and ICU have been increasing. In this case, ECMO with centrifugal pump has been used generally. However, due to the heavy weight and big size, the system is not adequate for emergency cases. And other defects of this system are that membrane oxygenator's pressure is high and blood are exposed to the air. There was some tries of ECMO using pulsatile pump, but it was found that the weak point of these system is high peak pressure and hemolysis. The mechanism of twin pulsatile pump is that Membrane oxygenator Outlet Pump(MOP) make negative pressure when Membrane oxygenator Inlet Pump(MIP) provides high positive pressure, and the negative pressure will decrease positive pressure of Membrane Oxygenator. Our group analyzed this advantage through In-Vitro and 12 Cases In-Vivo test.

  • Velocity-type repisratory air flow transducer measures dynamic pressure converted from air velocity based on the we1l-known Bernoulli's principle. It requires multiple velocity sampling holes on the flow plane. Measurement error theoretica1ly estimated by computer simulation was demonstrated to significantly reduce by unequally locating the velocity sampling holes. The flow plane was divided into multiple equi-area rings and the sampling holes were located on the circles also equally dividing each ring's area, which decreased measurement error down to 1/5 of the simple equi-radius ring division method. Also, less than 1 % relative error was estimated with 4 or more sampling holes. The present technique was less sensitive by <1/2 to the velocity profile change compared to the euqi-radius sampling. Therefore, the present unequal distance velocity sampling technique should be of great use to design the structure of the velocity-type respiratory air flow transducer.

  • A new motor-driven blood pump for artificial heart was developed. In this blood pump, a small size, high torque brushless DC motor was used as an energy converter and the motor rolls back and forth on a circular track. This movement of the "rolling-cyliner" causes blood ejection by alternately pushing left or right polyurethane blood sacs. This moving-actuator mechanism could be eliminate two potential problems of other motor-driven artificial hearts such as large size and poor anastomosis for the implantation. Theoretical analyses on the pump efficiency, the temperature rise, and the inflow mechanism were also performed. In a series of mock circulation tests, the theoretical analyses were compared to the measured hemodynamic and mechanical values. The pump system was shown to have sufficient cardiac output (upto 9 L/min), sensitivity to preload, and mechanical stability to be tested as an implantable total artificial heart.ial heart.

  • Source consislency filtering (SCF) is very effective at removing nOIse when only one or a few leads among multi-lead ECG signals are contaminated. When the noise at one or only a few leads are statistically uncorrelated with signals at other leads, SCF seleclIvely removes the noise with a neglIgIble amount of distortion in the original signal waveform. In order to enhance the understanding of this new method, we describe the lheory and implementational details of SCF in this paper. Numerical implementation and test results of SCF on a multi-lead ECG dalabase show that SCF is a new kind of adaptive filters utilizmg spatial as well as temporal information in multi-c.hannel signals origmatmg from a single source. We also describe the limitations and future improvements in using SCF.

  • The POCT (point-of-care test) sensing that has been a fast-developing field is expected to be a next generation technology in health care. The POCT sensors for the detection of proteins, small molecules and especially nucleic acids have lately attracted considerable attention. According to the World Health Organization (WHO), the POCT methods are required to follow the ASSURED guidelines (Affordable, Sensitive, Specific, User- friendly, Robust and rapid, Equipment-free, Deliverable to all people who need the test). Recently, several CRISPR (Clustered Regularly Interspaced Short Palindromic Repeats) based diagnostic techniques using the sensitive gene recognition function of CRISPR have been reported. CRISPR/Cas (Cas, CRISPR associated protein) systems based detection technology is the most innovative gene analysis technology that is following the ASSURED guidelines. It is being re-emerged as a powerful diagnostic tool that can detect nucleic acids due to its characteristics that enable rapid, sensitive and specific analyses of nucleic acid. The first CRISPR-based diagnosis begins with the discovery of the additional function of Cas13a. The enzymatic cleavage occurs when the conjugate of Cas protein and CRISPR RNA (crRNA) detect a specific complementary sequence of the target sequence. Enzymatic cleavage occurs on not only the target sequence, but also all surrounding non-target single-stranded RNAs. This discovery was immediately utilized as a biosensor, and numerous sensor studies using CRISPR have been reported since then. In this review, the concept of CRISPR, the characteristics of the Cas protein required for CRISPR diagnosis, the current research trends of CRISPR diagnostic technology, and some aspects to be improved in the future are covered.
