Biolgical activated carbon (BAC) processes are known to effectively remove organic pollutants in raw water, and biomass and attached bacterial species play an important role in removing process. In the present study, changes of bacterial biomass in granular activated carbon (GAC) process according to the depth and operating period were investigated. In addition, changes of bacterial biomass were also confirmed after UV exposure prior to the GAC process. Results from this this study showed that the bacterial biomass was decreased dependently according to the depth of GAC process. In case of UV pre-treatment, the bacterial biomass was declined significantly over the period of operation. However, changes in bacterial community were not shown during operation period without UV pre-treatment process. In conclusion, findings from this study may provide the useful information about the management of BAC process.

In this study, we estimated the applicability of length-weight relationship-based biomass calculations by comparison of body length of genus Polyarthra collected from different habitats. Through the comparison, we also tested availability of representative species-specific biomass value of Polyarthra which is often used without length measurement. Polyarthra samples were collected from rivers (Han River and Nakdong River) and reservoir (Paldang Reservoir), and the body length was measured for statistical comparison among habitats and biomass calculations using different equations suggested previously. According to the results, the body length of Polyarthra spp. was significantly different among sampling sites, and the necessity of body length measurement for rotifer species in each situation has been suggested rather than using the representative biomass values which is fixed without considering time and space. Comparison of suggested biomass calculations based on our measured Polyarthra body length, the equation suggested by McCauley showed more reasonable range of biomass values than that suggested by EPA. In addition, in order to calculate more accurate biomass, it is necessary to measure the body length of rotifers, at least more than 44 individuals to reduce error probability to less than 5% with 99% probability. However, since direct measurement of rotifers biomass is limited, it is considered that further analyses are required for more precise application of rotifer biomass of which has high variability due to complex morphologies and species-specific cyclomorphosis often induced by biotic and abiotic factors in the habitats.
The medium-large cladoceran species Simocephalus spp. predominantly occur in habitats with developed aquatic vegetation. Accordingly, due to Simocephalus' high contribution to zooplankton community biomass in the lake's littoral zone and wetland habitats, estimating their biomass is important to understand the matter cycling based on biological interactions within the aquatic food web. In this study, we reviewed the length-weight regression equations used previously to estimate Simocephalus biomass, directly measured S. serrulatus' body specification (length, width and area) and their biomass(dry weight) using instruments such as a microscopic digital camera and a microscale, and performed regression analysis between each other. When S. serrulatus biomass was estimated using the equation (Kawabata and Urabe, 1998) presented in 『Biomonitoring Survey and Assessment Manual』, Korea, errors between estimates and measures were relatively large compared to the S. serrulatus species-specific biomass estimate equation developed by Lemke and Benke (2003). In addition, both equations showed not only increasing trends in error (estimate-measure) with increasing S. serrulatus' body length, but also in error variance among similar-sized individuals. The results of regression analysis with dry weight by body specifications indicated that the most appropriate equation for estimating the biomass of S. serrulatus was derived from the width-dry weight exponential regression equation (R2=0.9555). The review and development study of such species-specific biomass estimation equations for zooplankton can be used as a tool to understand their role and function in aquatic ecosystem food webs.

Long-term (from 1995 to 2012) data of phytoplankton biomass (chlorophyll-a, Chl-a) and water quality were analyzed to investigate trends of eutrophication in downstream of Nakdong River (Mulgum). Long-term annual average concentration of water quality parameters and phytoplankton biomass at Mulgum showed an decreasing trends for 18 years. Phytoplankton biomass was high from annually December to March. Trophic state was evaluated as the eutrophic state annually from 1995 to 2012 by TSI (trophic state index) by Aizaki. From the results of simple regression analysis, correlation coefficient between Chl-a concentration and BOD concentration was high ($r^2$ = 0.82).
This study was conducted to elucidate the relationship between the root structure and the crown structure of Norway spruce(Picea abies [L.] Karst), and thereafter to obtain the regression equation for the estimation of relative root and needle biomass using the tree height and diameter at breast height(DBH) without measurement of root and needle biomass. The study site was Barbis stands of Harz region located in central part of Germany. Five dominant and three co-dominant trees of 30 to 40 year-old Norway spruce were selected and tree height, diameter at breast height, clear bole length, weight of total needle and branch, cross section and sapwood area at breast height for biomass of above ground part and also the length of root, the number of root, the weight of root, the cross section area of root etc. by dividing the horizontal and vertical roots for below ground part of tree were measured. The significantly correlation was shown between the biomass of most of variables of above ground parts and those of below ground parts. For the diameter of breast height to the weight of total root, regression equation was Y = 3.56X - 45.94 and decision coefficient was 0.96 showing highly correlation. The weight of total branches and needles, and the tree height etc. of above ground parts showed highly positive relationship with below ground biomass. The results obtained from this study can be used to the estimating of biomass of below ground using variables of above ground such as DBH in the 30 to 40 year-old Norway spruce stands.
In Bouin polder, one of the oyster culture zone on landbase in France, artificial substrate was suspended every week to study the variation of the biomass of benthic microalgae as the chlorophyll a. The meteorological and physico-chemical factors in sea water were studied by analysing the correlationship, correlation circle and principal component of these factors. Among the meteorological factors such as insolation, precipitation and wind, insolation was one of the most prominant factors associated with the increase of water temperature, salinity, pH and biomass but with the decrease of turbidity, dissolved oxygen and nitrate. Nitrate was the main contributor for the variation of biomass among the other nutrient components, while phosphate and silicate increased in summer when the biomass increased.
Long-term data (Ministry of Environment Water Quality Monitoring data) of phytoplankton biomass (chlorophyll a) and water quality were analyzed to investigate trends in biomass of the primary producers and water quality for the estuarine systems in Korea: Sumjin River, Han River, Asan Lake- Bay, Youngsan River, Keum River and Nakdong River. The literatures were also reviewed to examine the characteristics of phytoplankton biomass and water quality in the estuarine systems. The Sumjin River estuary, the single estuary without a dike in Korea showed the characteristics similar to other typical estuarine systems. Phytoplankton biomass was high during the fall at transitional regions (5 ${\sim}$ 15 psu) after riverine freshwater inputs were increased in summer. Concentrations of the nitrate and silicate were increased with the high river discharge rates. Phytoplankton biomass and nutrient concentrations were high during spring at the lower regions in the Han River whereas phytoplankton biomass and nutrient concentrations were high during spring at the upper regions in the Youngsan River. Phytoplankton biomass was the highest in the Asan Lake and nutrient concentrations were high at the upper region of the lake. In Nakdong River, phytoplankton biomass was high during winter and the biomass was slightly higher at upper region than at lower region. Long-term trends showed that total nitrogen and total phosphorus were mostly increased in the river systems. Implications of these results relevant to the water quality management for the river systems were also discussed.

During a three-year study (2000-2002), dramatic changes in the phytoplankton biomass and high transparency were repeatedly observed during mid-spring in the lower part of the Nakdong River. Rotifers (Brachionus, Keratella, Polyarthra) , sharply increased toward the middle and end of spring. As hydrologic retention time increased (to near 20 days) and water temperature increased from $10^{\circ}C$ to > $20^{\circ}C$ toward the end of spring, small cladocerans noticeably increased. Once phytoplankton biomass passed their peak stage in the mid-spring, a short period (one or two weeks) of relatively low phytoplankton biomass and high Secchi transparencies occurred. Grazing by the zooplankton was highest in spring, thus, it seems that high grazing activities of zooplankton grazing regulated phytoplankton dynamics in the river. The results indicate that the role of zooplankton grazing in controlling the phytoplankton biomass becomes more important during the spring when river water is relatively stagnant.
