  • This study was conducted to obtain the information on dry matter productivity in Angelica gigas Nakai for establishing the cultivation method. Cultivation methods such as direct seeding on Mar. 31, Apr. 15 and Apr. 30, and transplanting of $8^{\frac{1}{2}}$, 9, 12 months old seedling were investigated. There were similar tendencies in changes of agronomic characters for all cultivation methods. Dry weight started to increase from 120 DAS. Direct seedling showed vigorous growth for aerial part, whereas transplanting showed better underground part. The quadratic polynomial was suitable to dry weight of root after 120 DAS (or DAT) .Short growing time had higher RGR and NAR independent of cultivation method but Direct seeding on Mar. 31 and transplanting of 9 months old seedling had the highest CGRs. LAI was positively correlated with CGR, and CGR had the highest value as $6.74\g/m^2/day$ when LAI was 1.97. RGR and NAR increased as mean temperature was increased and showed the highest value around . The highest net production of leaf and petiole was obtained at 20 and$23^{\circ}C$, respectively.

  • Branching growth pattern of Mugnolza denuduta is likely to be originated from two growth strategies: environment overcoming strategy and life maintenance strategy, which coexist in a tree. Growth rate of branches was strongly correlated with relative light intensity (P<0.001) and physical contact (P<0.01), however there is no significant correlation between growth rate and direction of branch. When relative light intensity is less than 1%, the growth was restricted by physical contact with the surrounding branches. In contrast, the growth was rarely restricted by physical contact when relative light intensitiy was 10% or more. The branching rate was significantly affected by the presence or absence of physical contact (P<0.05), but it was not significantly affected by relative light intensity nor by the direction of branch. In the beginning stage of the growth, the ratio of the material allocation from main branch to subbranch was large and varied with the influence of surrounding environment. These various growth rates, which implicate a variety of material allocation ratios (0.16~0.98), affect branch growth pattern through the optimum growth strategies. The growth and arrangement of branches of Magnolia denudata display the solar collectors to maximize the total amount of energy absorbed and to overcome the restriction of the environment.

  • For the purpose of cultivating landscape plants, the culture soil of briquet ashes and sludge cakes from urban drainages was used as a bed soil. And Taxus cuspidata, syringa vulgaris, Ligstrum obtusifolia and Buxus microphylla were selected as experimental materials on this soil. The comparison of their growth showed the following results. Each plant showed a slight difference in primary growth and two months after planting, there were notable differences between treated and control plots respectively. Syringa vulgaris shoved the highest growth and the next were Ligstrum obtusifolia and Taxus cuspidata in series. Especially Taxus cuspidata showed the lowest quantity of dry weight compared with other plants, and influenced a little by mean temperature and solar radiation. It is expected to get a high effect in landscape planting by using briquet ashes and sludge cakes.

  • The experiment was conducted with three varieties (Hicks, Burley 21, and Sohyang) and cultivation type (Improved mulching, general mulching, and non mulching) of NC 2326 to model to curve of tabacco growth against time. The basic growth data were obtained by harvest method at intervals of ten days from transplanting at 7-8 times and analyzed by polynomial regression, orthogonal polynomial, and logarithmic transformation. It is shown that the C model of growth curve: T = A +$\sqrt{(1.4 AK + K)}$2K provides an excellent fit.

  • Grain yield of rice plants grown in outmost first and second rows in paddy field blocked by 50 cm wide levee was averaged 30 percent more than that in center rows, but yield increased percents in border rows were significantly different between varieties. Average border effect through 3 varieties were recognized only in first and second rows from levee, but most vigorous variety, Hangangchal, showed border effect up to fourth rows from levee. Rice plants grown in border rows had more number of panicles per hill and more number of spikelets per panicle. Total dry matter weight and average leaf area of rice plants in border rows differed with those in center rows from 30 to 60 days after transplanting. Early maturing variety showed the difference between border and center rows quickly concerning to total dry matter weight and leaf area. Rice plants grown in border rows showed higher values of CGR, RGR, NAR, and LAR through the growth duration except 1 or 2 growing periods.

  • The purpose of this study was to analyze the relationship between the annual variation in diameter growth of Quercus spp. and climatic factors such as monthly temperature, precipitation and solar radiation in central and northern Korea. Annual diameter growth was measured by using stem cores of 262 Quercus trees, and the correlation between the diameter growth and the climatic factors was analyzed. Mean diameter growth of Quercus spp. in Jungwangsan was larger than that in Woraksan, and mean diameter growth by the species was large in order of Q. serrata>Q. variablis>Q. mongolica>Q. dentata. The diameter growth pattern of Quercus spp. in Woraksan was different from that in Jungwangsan. Positive correlations between diameter growth of Quercus trees and temperature or the solar radiation during July were found in Jungwangsan. Significant correlations between diameter growth and solar radiation during March and precipitation during June were found in Woraksan. It is suggested that climatic factors similarly affect the diameter growth of Quercus spp. in a mountainous terrain, but influences of the climatic factors depend on other environmental conditions such as altitude, topography and soil depth.

  • This study was designed to estimate on the interaction of the first productivity, light condition and to examine the ecophysiological 'characteristics of Zoysia japonica. Artificial community of Zoysia japonica was analyzed effect of matter production and growth construction under various shading condition. The results summarized this experiment were as follows ; 1. The relative growth rate(RGR) in all experimental plots was high during the growth stage of 20 days after transplanting and then tend to decrease. RGR value in severe shading or short day condition was remarkably decreased from the early growth stage. 2. The net assimilation rate(NAR) was high during the early growth stage after transplanting. and then decreased the growth proceeded. NAR value in the severe shading or short day condition plots was low. 3. The increasing rate of leaf ared ratio(LAR) was high during the early growth stage after transplanting in the control plot and 30% shading plot, but it appeared to be high 40 days after transplanting in the 50% and 70% shading plot. LAR was appeared to be negative correlation against RGR and NAR. 4. The crop growth rate(CGR) in each experimental plot was increased until 50 days after transplanting, and then decreased. After that time, the maximum CGR value appeared in the control plot(1.56g /g, 10days), 60days after transplanting. CGR had positive correlation with LAI. The optimum LAI in the control, 30%, 50%, and 70% shading plots was appeared as 2.10, 1.75, 1.25, and 0.90.

  • Pinus densiflora is a dominant conifer species in Korea and also distributed in regions of Japan and eastern China. Success in the establishment and productivity of forest tree plantation is largely determined by selection of species and seed source. The provenance tests of Pinus densiflora in Korea are underway. However, the information of the growth performance of Japanese and Chinese provenances are insufficient. Therefore, this study was conducted to evaluate the growth performance of Pinus densiflora Japanese provenances. Data were collected from a provenance trial including established by Korea Forest Research Institude at Chungju in 1970. Six Japanese provenances ($31^{\circ}90^{\prime}{\sim}40^{\circ} 27^{\prime}$ in latitude and $128^{\circ}47^{\prime}{\sim}141^{\circ}80^{\prime}$ in longitude) were included in this trial. Pyeongchang provenance at Kangwon province in Korea was used for reference provenance. At nursery stage, the height and diameter at root collar of six Japanese provenances were smaller than those of Pyeongchang provenance. Among Japanese provenances, Kasahara provenance showed higher growth performance than those of others. The provenance rankings of growth performance were fluctuated until age 11. However, the growth performance of Japanese provenances showed higher than those of reference provenance after age 17. Kirishima-yama provenance showed best growth performance. Simple correlation analysis was conducted to investigate the geographic factors affecting growth performance. The height growth showed negative corelation with latitude of seed origin. Generally, Japanese provenences of Pinus densiflora were well adapted and grown in Chungju. However, it was suggested that further studies on other sites need to generalize the results of this study.

  • This study was conducted to investigate the effect of meteorological factors on the diameter growth and Key-year in Pinus koraiensis and Pinus densiflora trees grown in Chuncheon and Hongcheon. The results obtained were summarized as follows : 1. The diameter growth of Pinus koraiensis was better than that of Pinus densiflora grown in the same meteorological condition and site environment. 2. The influence of meteorological factors on the diameter growth of Pinus koraiensis was the highest in the descending order fog, hours of sunshine, precipitation, relative humidity, warm index, and evaporation. 3. The influence of meteorological factors on the diameter growth of Pinus densiflora was the highest in the descending order fog, hours of sunshine, relative humidity, precipitation, and warm index. But evaporation was not significant. 4. The Key-years for Pinus koraiensis and Pinus densiflora trees appeared in 1964 and 1913 when the diameter growth was influenced by the specific climate change.
