  • Seasonal changes of water relations parameters were obtained from p-v curves in leaves of Quercus grosseserrata and Quercus acutissima. The osmotic pressure at full hydration, ${\pi}_o$, and osmotic pressure at incipient plasmolysis, ${\pi}_p$, were high in newly emerged leaves but decreased with leaf development in each of the species. Water deficit at turgor loss was 10 to 20% in each of the species during the growing season. Maximum bulk elastic modulus in cell walls at full turgor, Emax, rises rapidly with leaf development before senescence in each of the species. Seasonal change of number of osmoles solute in symplasm per dry weight, Ns/DW, was higher in Quercus grosseserrata leaves than Quercus acutissima leaves, while relative water content (Vp/Vo, $RWC^*$, Vo/Vt) was relatively constant in each of the species.

  • Lycopus charkeviczii Prob. (Lamiaceae Martinov) is found in all provinces of the Korean Peninsula, excluding Jeju-do. This species is closely related to L. lucidus Turcz. ex Benth., having such characters as persistent calyx of which the length is longer than the nutlets, and narrowly lanceolate to oblong-lanceolate leaves. However, it is distinguished from L. lucidus by its parted calyx and its smooth or rarely glandular nutlets with an irregularly toothed apex. This taxon was named 'San-swip-ssa-ri' in Korean based on its habitat. We provide a description, illustrations, photographs, and a key of related taxa in Korea.

  • Protoplasts of both strains were produced by lysozyme digestion at $30^{\circ}C$ for 180min. Both strains were treated with $40{\mu}g$/ml of lysozyme in 30mM Tris-HCl buffer(pH 7.5) containing 10% sucrose at the late logarithmic growth phase. It was found that the efficiency of protoplast formation was high at $30^{\circ}C$ and pH 7.5 by measuring the decrease in absorbance. Optimum concentrations of sucrose $Ca^{2+}, \;Mg^{2+}$ for protoplast formation were determined to be 15%, 20mM and 6mM, respectively. Hydrolysis of cell wall and protoplast formation efficiency for L. plantarum showed better results than those for Leu. mesenteroides. The resistances to antibiotics erythromycin and chloramphenicols were chosen as the selection marker for the fusant between L. plantarum and Leu. mesenteroides. Production phase of protoplast in Leu. mesenteroides was also compared with L. plantarum in this paper.

  • In an effort to produce high quality Curcuma aromatica Salisbury in the southern area of Korea, a variety of shademethod was used to prevent withering during the summer. The experimental results are summarized as follows. The effect of shading on emergence of Curcuma aromatica Salisbury rhizome was none or very little. The effect of shading on the growth and development of Curcuma aromatica Salisbury was the highest under a shade rate of 1530%. In this case the size of the plant height was the biggest and loaves the largest, thus showing the best condition for plant growth. The growth of rhizome under a shade rate of 15% was more active than that without shading. The weight of rhizome in this case was the largest, and thus showing the best condition for rhizome growth.

  • The total photosynthetic rate in leaf mustard lines, which was calculated as the sum of the photosynthetic rate and the respiration rate, was not significantly different from their photosynthetic rate. Plant height, standing of rosetteness, showed a similar change to its specific leaf area (SLA). With increasing the plant height, leaf density increased and leaf color was lighter. It was found that shoot dry weight of leaf mustard was more affected by respiration. Also, it was hypothesized that respiration occurred not only in the leaf but also the stem. It was found that mustard lines whose leaf density was low showed a higher shoot growth. From this result, it was concluded that selection of a leaf mustard line with a larger SLA and lower leaf thickness could be effective in increasing photosynthetic rate.

  • Higher yield in rice paddies is greatly dependent on adequately balanced and timely supply of water. A majority of rice paddy in Korea is generally irrigated by rainfall, but in many cases it has to be supplemented by artificial irrigation for optimum rice culture. Although the water requirement of rice plant is for higher Than that of athec crops, submerged condition of rice paddy is not Necessarily required. The moisture requirement of rice plant varies with its growing stages, and it is possible to increase the irrigation efficiency through reduction of water loss due to percolation in rice paddies. An experimental plots were set up by means of sandomized block design with three duplication; (a) All time submerged, (b) Economically controlled, and (c) Extremely controlled. Three different irrigation periods Were (a) Initial sage, (b) Inter-stage, and (c) Yast stage. The topsoil of the three plots were excavated to the depth of 30 cm and then compacted with clay of 6 cm thickness. There after, they were piled up with the excavated top soils, leveled and cored with clay of 6 cm thickness around footpath in order to prevent leakage. The results obtained from the experiments are as follows, 1. There is no difference among the three experiments plots in terms of physical and chemical conditions, soil properties, and other characteristics. 2. Culm length and ear length are not affected by different irrigation methods. 3. There is no difference in the mature rate and 1, 000 grain weight of rice for the three plots. 4. The control plot which was irrigated every three days shows an increased yield over the all the time submerged plot by 17.8 percent. 5. The clay lined plot whose water holding capacity was held 5 days long, needs only to be irrigated every 7 days. 6. The clay lined plot shows an increased yield over the untreated plot ; over all-the-time submerged plot by 18 percent ; extremely controlled plot by 18 percent, and economically controlled plot by 33 percent. 7. It may be saved in water requirement about one Thirds.

  • Sixty five soybean varieties were tested to observe varietal response and to get the basic data for resistant variety breeding to soybean cyst nematode (Heterodera glycines I.). They were classified into five groups, from the most resistant to the most susceptible by decreasing rate of seed weight. A few Korean varieties were included in the most resistant group. In general, early maturing varieties were more susceptible. Total plant weight could be used as an important criterion to select a resistant variety to soybean cyst nematode.

  • A phosphate-solubilizing bacterium, Enterobacter intermedium 60-2G, was examined for plant growth-promotion and induction of systemic resistance using a model system of cucumber and scab disease, caused by Cladosporium cucumerinum. Compared with a nonbacterized control, treatment of cucumber with E. intermedium significantly reduced the severity of scab disease after challenge-inoculation with C. cucumerinum. Treatment of cucumber with E. intermedium also enhanced cucumber growth. The 60-2G strain showed a strong antimicrobial activity against several plant pathogenic fungi including Fusarium soysporum and Magnaporthe grisea. These results suggest the E. intermedium 60-2G is a promising candidate as a biological control agent displaying multiple beneficial properties to promote plant health.

  • To provide useful information on the improving cultural practices of mungbean, an investigation was made on variations of agronomic characteristics, yield, yield component, and grain quality of mungbean grown under three fertilizer levels of N, P, K with different upland soil, using varity, Gyeonggijaerae 5. The stem diameter of 5th internode was always thicker than 1st or 9th internode. Especially, 5th internode diameter was affected by the N, P, K fertilizer. The petiole angle under uncultivated land showed comparatively wider than that under cultivated land and the petiole angle increased from upper to lower node. LAI under cultivated land was higher than under uncultivated land. Especially, LAI of NPK, and NPK + compost treatments were generally higher than those of other treatments. LAI were remarkably increased by P application under uncultivated land. The grain yield was increased by increasing of the number of pods per plant, which were increased by K application under cultivated land, and P application under uncultivated land.
