  • In order to investigate the effect of boron and phosphorus for reduction of cold injury of rice, this experiment was undertaken by pot trial. Two levels of phosphorus and 6 levels of boron were applied once at the three stages such as tillering, panicle formation and meiosis stage. Cold water was irrigated to maintain cool temperature ranging 15 to $18^{\circ}C$ from panicle formation stage. It was shown a tendency that three to seven days of early heading were resulted by the 3, 5 and 10kg of boron application per 10 are. The ripening ratio and physiological root activity was rather slightly increased in the above boron levels.

  • Water extracts from spent mushroom substrate (SMSE)of edible mushrooms, Pleurotus eryngii, Hericium erinaceus and Lentinula edodes promoted growth of pepper seedling. Mycellial growth rate of Phythopthora capsici and Fusarium oxysporum was dramatically inhibited by 100% and 70% on PDA added with SMSE of H. erinaceus. SMSEs from H. erinaceus, P. eryngii, and L. edodes effectively reduced the disease severity of Phytophthora blight of pepper caused by Phytophthora capsici to 75%, 10% and 35%, respectively. These results suggested that SMSE from the mushrooms have dual effects that suppress phythopthora blight disease and promote plant growth of pepper.

  • Levan oligosaccoharides and low molecular weight levin were produced from levin by acid hydrolysis and following column chromatography. Levan hydrolysis was progressed proportionally as increased incubation time. In terms of levan hydrolysis reaction, no differences were found from the sources of levan. Optimum hydrolysis conditions for the formation of levan oligosaccharides were, 0.38 M H$_2$S0$_4$; and incubation at 95$\^{C}$ for 4 min. The purified products were determined as the mixture of oligosaccharides (degree of polymerization (DP) of 3-6), Two of lactic acid-producing bacteria, Lactobacillus plantarum KCTC 3104 and Pediococcus pentosaceus KCTC 3507, were studied in vitro for their ability to metabolize levin oligosaccharides. Apparently, the growth of both cells were increased by levin oligosaccharide diet, compared with those of levan diets, suggesting that levan oligosaccharides may be beneficial in selectively growth of lactic acid-producing bacteria.

  • The microorganisms with the antifungal activity against Phytophthora capsici and Colletotrichum acutatum and the plant growth-promoting activity were screened from a forest and natural fields of Gajang-Dong, Sangju-city. One of the isolates, Streptomyces griseofuscus 200401, was selected as a good plant growth-promoting strain in this study. In greenhouse test, the number of leaf, fresh weight, and dry weight of pepper plants, that were grown with treatment of culture suspension or powder containing S. griseofuscus 200401, were higher than those without the bacterial cells. Cultivation of S. griseofuscus 200401 strain for 7 days in a nutrient rich medium produced ammonium chloride up to 0.13 ${\mu}g/ml$ in the culture solution of S. griseofuscus. Treatment of the selected strain significantly reduced the severity of the late blight of pepper plants to show the equivalent disease control activity to chemical fungicide. This study suggests that S. griseofuscus 200401 strain could be a potential biological agent with the biocontrol activity and the plant growth-promoting activity.

  • This study was conducted to evaluate the effect of a growth-stimulating material (GSM) containing Eleutherococcus senticosuson on the longitudinal bone growth. The effects of GSM on proliferation zone and IGF-1 mRNA expression in rat growth plate, IGF-1 mRNA expression in MG-63 osteoblast and Hep-G2 hepatocyte, and bone growth of mouse tibia were studied. GSM significantly increased the proliferation zone in growth plate of proximal tibia (P<0.001) and the IGF-1 mRNA expression in growth plate was also increased (P<0.01). Treatment of GSM to MG-63 osteoblast and Hep-G2 hepatocyte also increased IGF-1 mRNA expression more than twice. In addition, bone mineral density of mouse tibia was significantly increased by GSM (P<0.05). Therefore, it was shown that GSM has an activity of bone growth promotion by increasing the expression of IGF-1, a major bone growth factor.

  • The phenolic compounds contained in milled barley grains were seperated and identified by gas liquid chromatography and the effects of phenolic compounds extracted from milled barley grains and each authentic phenolic compound on the growth of Saccharomyces cerevisiae were studied. Severn phenolic acids, namely cinnamic, protocatechuic, ferulic, sinapid, vanillic, syringic, gallic acids, were identified in milled barley grains by gas liquid chromatography. The contents of sinapic, ferulic, cinnamic, protocatechuic acids were larger than those of vanillic and gallic acids. Phenolic compounds, extracted from milled barley grains and supplemented in culture broth, were inhibitory to the growth of Saccharomyces cerevisiae at levels above 100ppm to 24 hours but not inhibitory at all levels after 48 hours. Cinnamic, ferulic, vanillic acids at all levels were inhibitory to the growth of Saccharomyces cerevisiae, among them cinnamic acid was most inhibitory. Syringic acid was inhibitory to the growth of the yeast at the initial stage of culture. But sinapic and protocatechuic acids were slightly stimulatory to the growth of the yeast and gallic acid was ineffective to the growth of the yeast.
