  • This study was conducted to elucidate the photosynthetic response to the environment and establish optimum cultivation conditions for the Korean endemic plant, Aster koraiensis. Photosynthetic characteristics according to growth stage, light, CO2, and soil water potential were investigated. During the first year of transplanting, photosynthetic rates were drastically increased until June, after which they slowly declined, During the second year, photosynthetic rates declined throughout the entire growth period. The highest level of light compensation point was shown the early growth stage. Photosynthetic rates affected by intercellular CO2 concentration were maintained or decreased over the CO2 saturation point. The lowest CO2 compensation point was 16.1 μmol·mol−1 during March. The morphological changes of leaves were observed due to shading with chlorophyll contents increasing. Photosynthetic rates were higher at 0% and 50% shading treatments than at 75%. There were rarely any morphological changes of leaves due to soil moisture, however, changes to leaf compactness were observed. Photosynthetic rate, apparent quantum yield, and respiration rate increased, whereas water use efficiency decreased over −25 kPa of soil moisture.

  • This study was conducted to elucidate the effects of green manure crop on growth characteristics and saponin contents of Platycodin grandiflorum Ridix roots for organic farming. Rye, hairy vetch and rye+hairy vetch were cultivated as green manure crops with several different methods before transplanting P. grandiflorum Radix. In root width and number of fine-roots, when the highest scores (23.9 mm, 25.7) was recorded in rye pre-cultibated plot in $2^{nd}$ year cultivation. Fresh weight of the Platycodin grandiflorum Ridix root was no significant difference among the different green manure crop treatments, but fresh weights of the Platycodin grandiflorum Ridix root of all green manure crop treatments were higher than that of control. The total content of saponin was highest detected in Platycodin grandiflorum Ridix roots of the hairy vetch plot (1,106 mg/100 g) and rye plot (1,693 mg/100 g) in $1^{st}$ and $2^{nd}$ year cultivation, respectively. Therefore, we confirmed that precultivation of the green manure crops showed significant differences in the growth characteristics and saponin contents of the Platycodin grandiflorum Ridix root, and growth and saponin contents in the Platycodin grandiflorum Ridix root of rye precultivated plot was much higher in $2^{nd}$ year cultivation than $1^{st}$ year cultivation.

  • This study was conducted to evaluate the effect of application of SCB liquid fertilizer produced after slurry composting and biofiltration (SCB) on turfgrass growth in golf course during 6 month period from May to October in 2008. The change of soil properties by applying CF and SCB was unaffected respective treatments. As compared with NF, turf color index of CF, S-1 and S-2 increased by 1.8%, 2.5%, and 3.4%, respectively and chlorophyll content by 13%, 19%, and 25%, respectively. Dry weight of S-1 and S-2 was increased by 15% and 26% than that of CF. As compared with CF, N uptake rate in S-1 and S-2 was increased by 21% and 37%, P uptake rate 57% and 28%, and K uptake rate 16% and 27%, respectively. S-2 showed the best effect for turf color index, chlorophyll content, dry weigh and nutrient uptake rate in creeping bentgrass. These results suggested that an mixed application of SCB and compound fertilizer was improved turf quality and growth of creeping bentgrass by increasing nutrient uptake rate of turfgrass.
