  • This study was conducted to evaluate the effect of optimized environment conditions with growth stage in photoautotrophic micropropagation on the growth of potato (Solanum tuberosum L. cv. Dejima) plantlets and energy efficiency. Optimum environment conditions at each stage were decided in our previous study. For the evaluation of optimized environment control, potato plantlets were cultured under four different conditions: photoautotrophic optimum conditions of photosynthetic photon flux density (PPFD) and $CO_2$ levels with growth stage (POG), photoautotrophic constant condition with average PPFD and $CO_2$ levels (PCA), photoauototrophic constant condition with maximum PPFD and $CO_2$ levels (PCM), and photomixotrophic conventional condition with 3% sucrose (PMC) as control. As a result, environment control with growth stage (POG) significantly promoted all the growth characteristics such as the number of nodes and unfolded leaves, shoot height, shoot diameter, and fresh and dry weights of potato grown in vitro. In addition, based on dry weight consumed electricity and $CO_2$ were the lowest in POG suggesting the highest energy efficiency among the treatments. After transferring potato plantlets to greenhouse, the plantlets under POG showed vigorous growth, which was pretty similar with those under PMC. The accumulations of dry matter in POG were 4.7 times in vitro and 3.8 times in greenhouse as much as those in the conventional control (PCM). Thus, we concluded that in vitro environment control with growth stage induced vigorous growth of potato plantlets both in vitro and in greenhouse with less energy consumption.

  • This study was carried out to investigate the effects of changes of ionic strength according to growth stage on growth and flowering of Dendranthema grandiflorum (Ramat.) Kitamura 'Seiun' grown hydroponically in perlite. The stage I, II, and III covered early vegetative growth (27-40 days after planting), latter vegetative growth (41-54 days), and reproductive growth (55-80 days), respectively. The 2 strength (1S and 2S) of nutrient solution were treated in stage I, whereas 3 strengths (1S, 1-2S, and 2S) were treated in stage II. Then, total 9 treatments in stage III were designated by 3 treatments (tap water, 1S, and 2S) for each 3 strengths in stage II. Each nutrient solution was applied 8 times per day. At vegetative growth stage (54 days after planting), stem length was highest when irrigated 8 times a day with 1S nutrient solution. Both photosynthesis and transpiration rate were higher in 1S than those in other treatments (1-2S, 2S), whereas leaf chlorophyll content was highest in 2S treatment. Ion content of plant treated with 2S was higher than other treatments. Growth (plant height, leaf area, stem length), fresh weight, and dry weight of each plant organ after flower bud formation were better in tap water treatment (1-1-0) than other 1S treatments (1-1-1, 1-1-2). Regarding the number of days to flowering, tap water treatment was the most effective. Thus, after flower bud formation supplying tap water or lower concentration of nutrient solution than those used during the vegetative growth stage was economical in saving chemical fertilizers, shortening the number of days to flowering, reducing salt accumulation in media, saving efforts of leaching, and reducing ground water contamination.

  • Smart farms are steadily increasing in research to minimize labor, energy, and quantity put into crops as IoT technology and artificial intelligence technology are combined. However, research on efficiently managing crop growth information in smart farms has been insufficient to date. In this paper, we propose a management technique that can efficiently monitor crop growth information by applying autonomous sensors to smart farms. The proposed technique focuses on collecting crop growth information through autonomous sensors and then recycling the growth information to crop cultivation. In particular, the proposed technique allocates crop growth information to one slot and then weights each crop to perform load balancing, minimizing interference between crop growth information. In addition, when processing crop growth information in four stages (sensing detection stage, sensing transmission stage, application processing stage, data management stage, etc.), the proposed technique computerizes important crop management points in real time, so an immediate warning system works outside of the management criteria. As a result of the performance evaluation, the accuracy of the autonomous sensor was improved by 22.9% on average compared to the existing technique, and the efficiency was improved by 16.4% on average compared to the existing technique.

  • This study was conducted to investigate physiologically active components and antioxidant capacity of grapevine leaves at growth stages. The leaves from two strains of grapevine, 'Campbell Early' and 'Rosario Bianco', were collected at five different growth stages (leafing, blossom, fruiting, coloring, and maturity). Total flavonoid content was higher in leafing stage than the other stages and gradually decreased during growing. Total phenol content was higher in 'Campbell Early' than in 'Rosario Bianco'. Hydroxyl radical scavenging ability increased in the leafing stage and decreased during growing. The electron donating ability was higher in 'Campbell Early' then 'Rosario Bianco' until blossom stage. Leaves from 'Campbell Early' showed higher total antioxidant capacity than those from 'Rosario Bianco'. According to the above results, grapevine leaves until the blossom stage would possess strong antioxidant activity by physiologically active components such as polyphenol compounds. Therefore, these results suggest that young grapevine leaves can be used as materials for the development of functional foods.

  • Prior studies of physiologically active substances in grapes have focused only on the fruit, pericarp, and branches, as well as the pulp and seeds. The present study assessed the changes in quercetin-3-O-glucuronide (Q3OG) and flavonol glycoside content using grape leaves from Vitis labruscana B. and V. coignetiae at different growth stages and provided basic data for quality control. Content analysis showed that both varieties differed in Q3OG and flavonol glycoside content by growth stage, and the components were found to be high in the order of fruit, maturation, and coloration. Also, Vitis labruscana B. has a better vascular relaxation effect than Vitis coignetiae. These results suggest that in the use of grape leaves as a functional raw material, Q3OG and flavonol glycosides can be used as indicator components. In addition, if raw materials for each growth stage are mixed in a particular ratio, it will be a way to manage the specific efficacy and content of indicator components.

  • This experiment was carried out to provide some information on the change of dry matter productivity and feed value (forage quality) according to growth stages of late-maturing variety, Hwasan 101, Italian ryegrass (Lolium multiflorum Lam.) in Grassland and Forages Division, National Institute of Animal Science, RDA, Suwon from 2000 to 2002. In Suwon, booting, first heading, full heading and flowering stages of cv. Hwasan 101 were May 8, 18, 28 and June 3, respectively. Dry matter (DM) and total digestible nutrients (TDN) yields of Hwasan 101 were tendency to be increased by the progress of growth. DM yield in first heading stage increased 50% more than DM 4,818 kg/ha of booting stage, and also DM yield in full heading stage was increased by 26% of DM 7,244 kg/ha of first heading. Crude protein content was decreased gradually by the progress of growth, which were 18.32, 15.12, 12.58 and 12.36% in booting, first heading, full heading and flowing stage, respectively. Acid detergent fiber and neutral detergent fiber contents was increased and in vitro dry matter digestibility decreased gradually with progress of growth, but there was no difference between full heading and flowering stages. Considering DM yield and feed value of Italian ryegrass, the suitable cutting times seems between full heading and flowering stage.

  • Adequate environment conditions with growth stage of potato were decided in a photoautotrophic micropropagation system using models. Total 20 day-period of growth were divided into three growth periods such as 6 (stage 1), 7(stage 2), and 7(stage 3) days. At the 1st stage, no significant differences were observed in the growth of potato plantlets at various photosynthetic photon flux density (PPFD) and $CO_2$ conditions. Considering damaged leaves, $80\;mmol{\cdot}m^{-2}{\cdot}s^{-1}$ PPFD and ambient $CO_2$ level were adequate in this stage. At the 2nd stage, significant differences were partly observed in several growth characteristics including dry weight. Based on the dry matter model, over $240\;mol{\cdot}m^{-2}{\cdot}s^{-1}$ PPFD was too high to cultivate potato plantlets at this stage due to the occurrence of damaged leaves. Considering both plant growth and energy efficiency, $160\;mol{\cdot}m^{-2}{\cdot}s^{-1}$ PPFD and $700\;mol{\cdot}mol^{-1}\;CO_2$ were selected for the adequate combination. At the 3rd stage, the biomass accumulation was significantly induced in potato plantlets under higher levels of PPFD and $CO_2$ concentration as suggested by increased fresh and dry weights. However, we could not find the saturated point with regard to dry matter due to continuous increase of dry mater even under maximum PPFD ($320\;mmol{\cdot}m^{-2}{\cdot}s^{-1})$. Thus, $320\;mol{\cdot}m^{-2}{\cdot}s^{-1}$ PPFD and $1800\;mol{\cdot}mol^{-1}\;CO_2$ were considered as the best choice at final stage in this study. In conclusion, even though the growth period of micropropagated potato plantlets was quite a short, favorable environmental conditions required at each growth stage were different. This technique could improve the growth of micropropagated plantlets compared to the conventional micropropagation and apply to other agriculturally important crops as well as potato in the future.

  • Bacterial population density on soybean leaves was $10^2~10^5CFU/cm^2$. Bacterial population density was increased by progress of plant growth stage. Population density of soybean sprout rotting bacteria on soybean leaves was $0~10^3CFU/cm^2$. Population density of soybean sprouts rotting bacteria was related to cultivating area, but not related to plant growth stage. Cultivar and population density of soybean sprout rotting bacteria were less corelated, and varied by plant growth stages and plant parts. Erwina cypripedii, E. carotovora subsp. carotovora, Xanthomonas campestris pv. glycines, Staphylococcus sp., and Micrococcus sp. were identified as pathogenic bacteria causing soybean sprout rot. In generally population density of E. cypripedii, E. carotovora subsp. carotovora, Micrococcus sp., and X. campestris pv. glycines were high.

  • This experiment conducted to know physiological characteristics and stress effect on different growth stage of soybean by night illumination. Soybean variety, Shinpaldalkong 2, Keumjungkong and Muhankong were treated by night illumination with 20~30 Lux (0.05~0.08W m$^{-2}$ , 0.24~0.36 $\mu$㏖ S$^{-1}$ m$^{-2}$ ) for 15 days at six different growth stage, seedling, pre-floral initiation, post-floral initiation, pod filling and seed ripening stage. Night illumination delayed flowering to 2~8 days compared to control. Delay of flowering by night illumination severely effected at the pre-floral initiation stage. Stem length was increased all the night illumination treatments except the pod filling stage. Number of nodes in Shinpaldalkong 2 and Keumjungkong 1 were increased until before post-floral initiation stage but in Muhankong were increased until after post-floral initiation stage by night illumination treatments. Number of pods were decreased all the night illumination treatments except seedling stage compared with control. Yield decreased all the treatments and severe the loss rate degree showed the order of prefloral initiation, post-floral initiation, seedling and flowering stage.
