Investigation of Cognitive Model of Task Commitment on Biology Classification Inquiry (생물 분류 탐구에서 과제 집착의 인지적 모형 규명)

  • The purpose of this study is to investigate a cognitive model of task commitment on biology classification inquiry. To achieve this goal, first, this study analyzed several literatures on task commitment in biology inquiry, and invented the tentative model of the task commitment. To investigate a tentative model invented, 2 main tasks were developed. These tasks were administered to 8 high-school students, first grade. Raw protocols were collected by thinking aloud method and a retrospective interview method. Collected protocols were converted to segmented protocols and coded by analyzing frame based invented model. The codes were analyzed. As a result, some problems were discovered, tentative model were revised. New analyzing frame based on Improved model were composed, and raw protocols were re-analyzed. Finally, a cognitive model of task commitment on biology classification inquiry was investigated. The investigated cognitive model of task commitment on biology classification inquiry was constructed 3 steps, 'Task commitment Induction', 'Task commitment Reinforcement', 'Task commitment Maintenance'. And each steps were consisted of several sub-factor. And commitment component were changed in each steps. Through this results, base information for strategy that improvement task commitment on biology classification inquiry is provided. Furthermore, the cognitive model of task commitment on biology classification inquiry will assist on evaluation and feedback by stage on task commitment.

Development of a Negative Emotion Prediction Model by Cortisol-Hormonal Change During the Biological Classification (생물분류탐구과정에서 호르몬 변화를 이용한 부정감성예측모델 개발)

  • The purpose of this study was to develope the negative-emotion prediction model by hormonal changes during the scientific inquiry. For this study, biological classification task was developed that are suitable for comprehensive scientific inquiry. Forty-seven 2nd grade secondary school students (boy 18, girl 29) were participated in this study. The students are healthy for measure hormonal changes. The students performed the feathers classification task individually. Before and after the task, the strength of negative emotion was measured using adjective emotion check lists and they extracted their saliva sample for salivary hormone analysis. The results of this study, student's change of negative emotion during the feathers classification process was significant positive correlation(R=0.39, P<0.001) with student's salivary cortisol concentration. According to this results, we developed the negative emotion prediction model by salivary cortisol changes.

Characteristics of Middle School Students' Open-Inquiry Report and Their Perceptions of Conducting Inquiry (중학생의 자유 탐구 보고서에 나타난 특징과 탐구 수행에 대한 학생들의 인식)

  • In this study, open inquiry reports of 165 eighth graders in Daegu were analyzed in terms of content area, the types of inquiry hypothesis, and the types of inquiry variables. Before summer vacation, students learned about inquiry process and explored their own inquiry topic for two class hours. During summer vacation, students performed open inquiry including problem selection, designing and performing experiment, data collection, data analysis, and writing report. After the vacation, students submitted their reports, and answered to additional survey regarding the source of inquiry idea, the definition of hypothesis, and the most difficult step of inquiry process. As a result, chemistry was the most dominant content area of the reports and biology and life science were the next. 130 out of 165 reports included inquiry hypotheses, and most of them were predictive hypotheses. In many reports, dependent and independent variables could not be identified because of their ambiguity. However, inquiry variables described in experimental design, which were mostly categorical variables, were clearer than those described in inquiry subject and inquiry hypothesis. The most difficult step of inquiry process for students was to generate an idea for open inquiry.

International Comparison of Korean Biology Gifted-Students (한국의 생물 영재 학생에 대한 국제적 수준 비교)

  • In this study, the achievement of Korean biology gifted-students was compared with that of International Biology Olympiad(IBO) participants to explore international achievement level of biology and to suggest the need of teaching program for biology gifted-students. Korean thirty gifted-students were selected through test by Korean Biology Olympiad Committee. They examined theoretical test two times in January and March. 1998. Theoretical part consisted of eight domains as follows; cell biology. anatomy and physiology of plants, anatomy and physiology of animals, ethology. genetics and evolution, ecology, systematics, and microbiology. As a result, Korean biology gifted-students had lower achievement than IBO participants in eight domains. and especially much lower achievement in ethology and systematics. Though thirty Korean gifted-students were found to had much lower achievement than lBO participants, four higher rankers of them are in prospect of winning bronze medals. Thus, it is necessary to develope an appropriate teaching program for biology gifted-students with theoretical lectures and inquiry activities.

Analysis of Question Patterns Appearing in Teaching Demonstrations Which Applied Science Teachings Model Prepared by a Pre-service Biology Teacher (생물 예비교사의 과학수업모형을 적용한 수업 시연에 나타난 질문 유형 분석)

  • This study aimed at finding points of improvement in teaching expertise by analyzing the question patterns that appeared during teaching demonstrations which applied science teaching models prepared by a pre-service biology teacher. The question analysis frame for analyzing question types were categorized largely into the question types of Category 1 (questions in cognitive domain, questions with research function, questions in affective domain), Category 2 (repeated questions, questions for narrowing the range, practice questions), and Category 3 (questions on student activity progress, memory questions, and thinking questions). The results of analyzing question patterns from five different science teaching models revealed a high frequency of questions in the fields of cognition and memory. For the circular learning model, questions from the cognitive field appeared the most often, while, student activity progressive questions in particular were used mostly in the 'preliminary concept introduction stage' of the circular learning model and the 'secondary exploratory stage', in which experiments were conducted, and displayed the characteristics of these stages. The discovery learning model combined the courses of observation, measurement, classification and generalization, but, during teaching demonstrations, memory questions turned up the most, while the portion of inquisitive function questions was low. There were many questions from the inquisitive learning model, and, compared to other learning models, many exploratory function questions turned up during the 'experiment planning stage' and 'experiment stage'. Definitional questions and thought questions for the STS learning model turned up more than other learning models. During the change of concept learning model, the five concepts of students were stimulated and the modification of scientific concepts was very much aided by using many memory questions.

Changing Methodologies and Reshaping Concepts in Biodiversity Science: A Historical Review of Research on Human Genetic Diversity (생물학 연구 방법론 변화에 따른 생물다양성 개념의 전환: 인간 유전다양성 연구 사례)

  • In order to shed some light on the historical change of biodiversity concepts, this paper reviews the science and technology studies (STS) literature on the history of biological research on human genetic diversity. By doing that, I show how the notion of genetic diversity in the human population - from "race" to "population" to "biogeographical ancestry" - has changed with methodologies and techniques over the last hundred years. In the meantime, I point out contexts and situations, despite conceptual and methodological developments, that show that current human genetic diversity research is slipping into the past mistakes of scientific racism. This article offers biodiversity researchers an opportunity to consider their own scientific practices on classifying species more reflectively.

채소작물 병해방제 집중탐구 (7) 토마토 - 재배현장의 문제병해 - 잿빛곰팡이병 배꼽썩음병 시들음병

  • 토마토의 병해는 우리나라에서 모두 13종이 알려져 있다. 그중에서 가장 피해가 큰 병해는 잿빛곰팡이병, 시들음병(위조병), 배꼽썩음병, 바이러스병이다. 이외에 잎곰팡이병, 겹둥근무늬병, 역병, 더뎅이병등이 발생하고 있으나 앞의 3가지 병해에 비하면 발생도 국부적이고 피해도 적다. 잿빛곰팡이병은 시설재배 농민들이 재배상 격고 있는 가장 큰 골칫거리중의 하나다. 일반노지재배에서는 장마철을 제외하고는 큰 피해는 없으나 시설재배의 저온다습한 환경과 관련하여 이 병이 대발생하여 흔히 큰 피해를 가져온다. 시들음병은 토양전염성 병해로 병원균은 외류의 덩굴쪼김병과 분류학상 같은 종류이나 병원성만 다른 곰팡이의 일종이다. 이 병은 토마토의 연작과 상관하여 그 발생이 점차 늘어나는 추세에 있다. 배꼽썩음병은 기생성인 생물에 의하여 발생하는 병은 아니지만 전염성이 있는 기생성 질병에 못지않게 많은 피해를 가져오는 병해다. 이외에도 피해가 큰 병해로 어느작물이든 문제가 되는 바이러스병해가 있다. 여기서는 농민들이 토마토재배에서 겪고 있는 문제병해를 중심으로 그 발생생태와 효과적인 방제대책을 알아본다.

The Analysis of Biology in the 6th Middle School Science Textbooks based on Criteria for Selecting Curriculum Objectives (교육과정의 목표 설정 준거에 따른 제 6차 중학교 과학교과서 생물영역 분석)

  • This study is to make suggestion for developing textbook systematically by analyzing biological contents and organization in science textbooks which are important instructional media to accomplish objectives of the 6th middle school science curriculum. The inclusiveness degree of the 6th science educational objectives reflected in the textbooks was analyzed by Klopfer's and the Korean Educational Department's objectives taxonomy. And the biological contents and the organization of the science textbook were analyzed by learner, subject matter, and society dimensions which are selecting criteria for curriculum objectives suggested in Tyler's curriculum model. The analyzed results are as follows: 1. The inclusiveness degree of the educational objectives was very low. 2. Regarding the dimension of learner, the concepts of formal operational cognitive level were much increased as grade becomes higher. And the degree of learner's interests reflected on the learning topics and domains was very low. 3. Regarding the dimension of subject matter, the concept-centered learning was increased, in relation to inquiry learning as grade becomes higher. The analyzed results of inquiry subskills showed that observation, classification, and recording skills in 1st grade, observation and operation skills in 2nd grade, and interpreting data skills in 3rd grade were centered. As the problems and processes were presented, so most of inquiry activities had low openness scale. The learning contexts were organized into discipline-centered in relation to real life. 4. Regarding society dimension, the learning topics of environments and health were much presented. but those of biotechnology and career were presented scarcely. And most learning topics related society dimension were organized in textbooks of the 2nd and 3rd grade. These suggested that to accomplish curriculum objectives effectively. the inclusiveness degree of educational objectives is to increase and, the contents and organization of textbook were constructed harmoniously in aspects of learner, subject matter and society dimensions.

New Host Records of Three Ichneumon Flies (Hymenoptera: Ichneumonidae) from South Korea (한국산 맵시벌과(벌목) 3종의 새로운 숙주 보고)

  • This paper reports new hosts for three ichneumonids (Apophua evanescens evanescens, Teleutaea minamikawai, and Trathala flavoorbitalis) from South Korea. These three species were discovered from the lepidopteran pupae, viz., Cleora leucophaea (Butler) (Geometridae), Adoxophyes honmai Yasuda (Tortricidae), and Pyrausta phoenicealis (Hübner) (Crambidae), respectively. Among these, the lepidopteran family Geometridae and Crambidae are also newly recorded as host groups for the genera Apophua and Trathala.
